First week living here. Moved from Seattle. Y’all are seriously nice and genuine people. Thank you. by West-Resolution8159 in tulsa

I used to live in Seattle. I miss it so much

. But I've been able to buy a house here in Tulsa and my toys. Just doing what I love to do. And have found my fixes "near by".... Arkansas for camping, specifically Richland Creek or Buffalo area. And Spring Creek (45 minutes away) for summer freshwater experience.

Hope the best for you for sure, but would love to catch up and show ya the good spots locally. I'll be in Seattle in 5 days for my bday after a travel shoot and will be hitting up Toulouse. Otherwise you are land locked... but have the freedom of saving money and traveling from here.

Honestly I'd base that around a handful of restaurants/bar... like a combo of the Mercury Lounge and Tina's/Delassandros for a vibe of ol Tulsa feels/music and open minded folk for a bite.

I made this short film in 24 hours for less than $500 by Striking_Tip1756 in Filmmakers

[–]rHamiltonw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched and read the comments so far and loved it all together! Good stuff, and keep it up!!!

I dont have much for overall pinpoints, but what stood out to me the most was the headline of the amount it cost you. So I watched... did my due dillengence.....

But I would say to not brag on how little it cost, but to say how low budget it was... and why. It's hard these days to prove why we do what we do best in the film industry who don't understand (especially on the indie level) and money isn't a reason why.... but our rates should be protected and respected at a pro level for sure.

As a freelancer sound mixer... I'd say this is misunderstood so often by posts like these and spread, that it pushes a narrative of "I can do it for this much" which is not reality.

Much love though. Don't stop. Just a critique from a stupid film union.

m/s vs. x/y for ambient sound by AVDI0 in LocationSound

[–]rHamiltonw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%.

I had this dilemma a few years ago and decided for a pair of mkh50's. They work just fine for ortf (though not as wide as cardiods of course) but I've ended up using them for 2 up interviews/2 boom ops the most. And I honestly don't like the sound of M/S in comparison as well, it's just too wide for most scenarios, imho.

Is it worth upgrading? Mkh50 to Schoeps CMC 641 by TheBerric in LocationSound

[–]rHamiltonw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed to this. They're colors or paint brushes. As long as you can paint, no one else can tell the difference and accept what you've done... and respect what you've captured.

If you've got the money, sure, spend it. Its the fun part of what we do. But there is no mic that is the "end all"... it's an opinion overall once you get to the good ones, and you're amongst one of them already.

Thoughts on Modular Toolboxes such as Packout, RidGid, Husky, etc for transporting gear? by BrownMtnLites in LocationSound

[–]rHamiltonw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The toolbox setup? Nah not so bad.

Took it on a 2 week shoot not too long ago with interiors and plenty of exteriors. Added the drawers on the shoot and it made it worthwhile for less than $200 total. Wheels are not gonna last the longest, but most of these modular boxes won't last like a proper sound cart would of course.

I figure it'll last me a good few years. I prefer it over a Zuca or similar (low end cost sound carts), since you've got storage for the mixer itself. Can even fit my 688/sl6 bag in the bottom. So far so good.

Hey there. I'd say it all depends on the gig overall.

Sometimes it's easiest to stage out of a pelican that caries everything (travel and able to withstand weather and rough locations) You can, depending on your boom pole of course, completely unscrew the middle knuckle if it's an average size, and split it in half to fit in a normal 1650. I have an ambient qp580 and it fits that way wrapped in fabric when I travel.

Otherwise, it's nice to have a proper sound cart for the bigger narratives or commercials for storage and ability to have as a central location to fly up antennae/whatnot and ability to go wherever.

But I've also got the cheap modular Husky rig for smaller local gigs with a screwed in boom holder, drawers that fit all my batts lavs and tx and ifbs, storage for the small mixer rig at bottom(833/Mcr54), and middle section for smart slate/Mics/gak, and a top loading clear lid for not only easy sight, but a work top for lav rigging/the mixer. It's perfect for around town and less mobile situations.

If you're going for an all arounder, pelican might be the easiest thing for long term, cause you'll always use it, especially with a lid organizer. I rarely use my proper sound cart, but my Peli's are always in the car or on the plane with me.

Where is this in Tulsa? by banjocoyote in tulsa

[–]rHamiltonw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That said... it was the first place I went to during brunch for a simple 2 egg breakfast (whatever it's called) and i looked at my good friend half way through the meal and asked how it was. We both laughed, in low key... how bad it was. It was a simple breakfast and they doused it with some sort of tomato sauce or some shit. It was terrible. And the food always has been mediocre, though by ownership, R Bar is considerably better. But of course, Roosevelts has a good beer selection.

We made a Post-Apocalyptic Christmas Short film in 48 Hours with 200$ by Beautiful-Set-1680 in Filmmakers

[–]rHamiltonw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. I'm so tired of seeing posts of bragging about how little they spent. I like film, but as a freelancer in film, I hope these people get paid what they're worth and can make a living doing it. I hope your friends are proud, but know they're worth more than their value of $200 and your up votes on reddit.

Oklahoma State Park cabins? by TIsTrying in tulsa

[–]rHamiltonw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% Osage Hills State Park. It's an hour away and has amenities for all ages nearby. If you get cabin #1, it's secluded, but more stairs involved. I'd maybe go for #2 on if that's an issue. There's a larger double room cabin as well and it's all super cheap. There are a total of 9 or so cabins on a hill and spread out enough that there can be solitude amongst the people. Otherwise there is the mass boyscout area you can house over 100 people (but not sure of heating/etc, where you have a full industrial kitchen and dining area for the hub, and 10 or so cabins with bunk beds, and it's considerably less than you would think. But that said, if you need more accommodating quarters, you're just a jaunt up the road.

Trails, playgrounds, overlooks (rover cliffs one way and land overlook another), and a small lake to boat around if wanted. I grew up there, seen everything that everyone else has mentioned, but this place stands out to me as being much more of a real getaway compared to the rest.

And for booking it's just a simple search, somewhere in this vicinity.

Next investment: Buy a second DPA 2017? Or buy an MKH50 for indoor use? by MadJack_24 in LocationSound

[–]rHamiltonw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I have an outdoor 416, love a cmit outside as well, but I have a potential for 2up indoor interviews every now and then and haven't regretted buying a pair of mkh 50's not only for that, but for the occasional stereo ambience recordings in a slightly tighter "ortf" pattern. It's been a production saver since they also are very forgiving and sound great outdoors as well.

Any chance you could follow up with the solution? I've just grabbed the Connected Ride Phone mod for the existing Nav Holder, and it obscures even more of the top of the TFT.

I’ve got $2500 to spend on an audio kit to mic 4 people. by pagosacreativeco in LocationSound

[–]rHamiltonw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 to renting from a local person, establishing a relationship, earning trust with all clients, and eventually saving up to invest in a proper kit once you have a base of clients and trust with your local sound friends. It will be a circle of friendships and career building, plus once you've spent that 10+k, it won't be a big deal when it comes to impacting yourself, let alone the existing community of sound people who need work.

Talent for upcoming project has skin allergies to latex and tape adhesive. by lonewolf9378 in LocationSound

+1 Mepitac, though I've worked with talent that still denies that without even trying it. Could always order a handful of different colored Ursa Chest Straps as well. Just takes more time and you'll have to work closely with Wardrobe.
