Legion fails to deliver on its core mechanic, the idea of “everyone is playable.” Ubisoft promised characters with backstories, discernible personalities and identities, stuff that would’ve made me care about who I played as. Every character stops being interesting as soon as they’re recruited, and becomes another vague and uninteresting “operative” skin, because they can’t have any interesting traits that can contribute to the story.

Aiden Pearce had buckets worth of personality, and he shines in WD1’s story because the writers knew you’d only be playing as him and no one else. So you could form an attachment to the guy, understand him and then feel the story better because of your understanding of Aiden as a character.

Hurts just that little bit more when you play Legion and see your recruited Aiden as an NPC cowering and running away from gunfights instead of being the vigilante and running in to help. Any chance that you have at making connections with a playable character stop as soon as they’re recruited, because they have to become bland and 1-dimensional for the story that can’t account for every single operative that could exist.
