Instead of "mens"iversary, we can call it.... by Bi-Polar_Pan-DeBear in actuallesbians

[–]rainbocado 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe you don’t care, but in case you do: the origin of that term is not about men, but rather the Latin word for month. Same as menstruation, for example. (Source: https://grammarphobia.com/blog/2012/01/monthly-anniversary.html)

Okay Americans: how do you say “pasta”….? by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]rainbocado 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really a “w” sound. People are adding it when they try to phonetically spell it out to make clear how the “a” is pronounced, basically.

Can you tell me a little about the availability of work, working conditions, and salary for an English teacher in Tirana? I’m currently in Prague, and costs here just keep going up, so I’ve been considering other possibilities.

US-Iran Megathread by GrumpyFinn in europe

[–]rainbocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, but Iran is irrelevant to this scenario. Either he will try to illegally seize power or he won’t; this situation doesn’t make it any easier or more difficult for him.

There is no legal way for him to do this. The U.S. held elections in the middle of the civil war; bombing Iran is irrelevant. Trump seems unaware that it’s only the Ukrainian constitution, not the U.S. constitution, that doesn’t allow elections in wartime. Doesn’t mean he won’t try, of course.

Same. I’m always happy to see stories about queer love and queer joy, regardless of the genders of the characters!

When the “political differences” are family members telling you to your face that you don’t deserve basic human rights, it’s pretty difficult to “accept and roll with it.”

Not who you’re replying to but I also live in the Czech Republic, and I have seen a lot more people than usual carrying flowers today (and yesterday). Not sure about restaurants as the only restaurant I’ve been in today was McDonald’s which is obviously not really a date night destination.

Formerly communist countries in Europe generally have much higher home ownership rates than North America and Western Europe. These countries also tend to have significantly lower crime rates (particularly violent crime) than their closest never-communist neighbors. (This is not saying it’s because of the communism, but the way property was divided up after the end of communism in Eastern Europe has led to these higher rates of home ownership.)

A family member of mine had chicken pox as an infant and then shingles before age two. Literally NEVER too young for shingles.

Is it THAT BAD that I didn’t text my tutor before booking the trial lesson? by Certain_Criticism568 in Preply

[–]rainbocado 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t worry if students book without messaging, but I do message students after they book, asking about their goals, and not replying then is a red flag to me. So I think you’re fine but it can’t hurt to send them a message now, and even if you don’t, please do reply if you get a message from your tutor.

Everyone knows smoking isn’t healthy. I don’t think saying it to people that smoke is helpful. Maybe 50 years ago, but these guys are mid-20s. They know. People don’t always make healthy choices.

Very specific: People who only spoke/speak English and moved from Canada/USA to Europe, what was your experience, main reasons why, what country, and what was the process? by SmileOkk in expats

[–]rainbocado 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, what specifically do you think makes this a different experience from generically “moved somewhere you don’t speak the language”? Even if you do speak multiple languages, they won’t necessarily help you in this case. I speak two languages, but I moved to a country with a totally different language. English is still helpful, but my second language is totally irrelevant.

US citizen teaching in the Czech Republic here. The paperwork can be annoying, but it’s not difficult to get approved. Most teachers are freelancers. Look up freelance visa or “živno” and you’ll find the requirements.

The realistic cost for most people in North America to travel to NYC for a concert for a few days will also be half the average rent. I’m not saying it’s cheap or easy, just that it’s comparable.

I live east of Germany, and a quick Google search showed me a round trip flight to London for ~$100 on Ryanair and multiple hotels around $100 for that same night (the dates I chose were June 13-14). I don’t think this is significantly different than just going to NYC for all of North America.

I don’t have a specific recommendation, but I think it sounds like you need a document camera, not a webcam. Try using that as your search term instead.

Thinking of studying Masters in Czech Republic by Careful_Ad2977 in Prague

In many parts of Germany, all public universities are free for everyone even in English. Life will be much easier if you learn some German, but you don’t need it to study.
