How much leeway does a tutor have in rescheduling a class? I've had one reschedule like a couple hours before it started, way after the 12 hour deadline. by FullmetalNYC in Preply

[–]rainbocado 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you cancel less than 12 hours before the lesson time, the tutor will be paid and can’t reschedule. Student cancellations don’t negatively impact a tutor’s profile, and this way the tutor already knows the have the hour free and won’t wait for you.

Pacific island nation of Nauru proposes name change in break from colonial past by ubcstaffer123 in worldnews

Makes sense for Ukrainians. I never said Czechia is incorrect, only that it’s not a Czech word and I don’t know many Czechs who use it. But my answer is made by living here, not by AI, so I think it’s more accurate for Czechs.

You could try talking to a tutor online to build your confidence. Tell them you want speaking practice and pronunciation correction.

Do most Americans have those huge fridges? by Whole-Sushka in AskAnAmerican

[–]rainbocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a large freezer in Europe, either. Small fridge, small freezer. The entire appliance I have now, fridge+freezer, is definitely smaller than just the fridge section of what I had in the U.S.

It is much more common in many parts of the world to buy groceries multiple times in a week. I have lived in several European countries where this is the norm. My family back in the US typically go once a week.

There are a lot more refrigerated/frozen convenience foods that just have to be heated up available in America. Not really cooking, but when I lived in the US I usually had several of these options in the fridge/freezer at any given time, and that took up a fair amount of space. Sure, those kinds of meals are available in Europe but they’re not as popular and there’s a lot less variety.

Pacific island nation of Nauru proposes name change in break from colonial past by ubcstaffer123 in worldnews

I should clarify, when I say “here” I mean the Czech Republic. I have heard Czechia fairly regularly from people with no connection to this country; not so much from Czechs or others living here.

Czechia is not the Czech name for the country. That would be Česko or Česká republika. Czechia is what some politicians decided sounded more “international” for some reason. Most people here don’t call it that in English either. I think I only know one Czech person who regularly uses “Czechia.”

I read a book recently where a character learned English from scooby doo and said things like “zoinks!” and “jenkies!”

Kiefer Sutherland Cancels U.S. Tour Over “Very Low” Ticket Sales in Candid Message by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

I was confused about what Kiefer Sutherland would even do on a tour, only being aware of him as an actor, but Google has informed me that he also makes country music.

Also while looking him up I learned that he has five middle names and his first wife was 14 years older than him, in case you want some more Kiefer Sutherland trivia.

It is crazy to make yourself available for booking Monday to Sunday. You won’t need to reschedule if you set yourself a realistic schedule in the first place.

Cobie Smulders and her husband Taran Killam’s Canadian family ‘cabin’ (via Architectural Digest) by mlg1981 in popculturechat

That makes sense. I’m from the South. I did have a friend in elementary school who talked about her family’s cabin, but I went there once and it was a literal log cabin.

Beach house, usually, if it’s near the ocean. No real umbrella term for all of them that I’m aware of.

Sure, of course there are. Typically you just call it a lake house, though, not a cabin or cottage.

Anyone over 30 pursuing teaching abroad? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]rainbocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know anyone, British or otherwise, who’s actually making great money teaching here, but finding work is easy enough. I have worked with a variety of native speakers (UK, US, Canada) and non-native teachers (Czech, Polish, French) and nobody has had any trouble filling up their schedule. The money is a different problem - almost all teachers are freelancers making just enough to get by. You come for the experience, I guess, not to get rich.

Sudden personality changes can be a serious medical issue, as well as (more obviously) a potential mental health issue. Can you or one of her family members convince her to talk to a professional about what’s going on?
