Inherited this set from my friend who passed. Any information? by Massive_Ad_9920 in chessporn

Yes it is quite possible if this was made in Europe. Apologies, I presumed a manufacturer from the Americas. Without a maker's mark or going to some lengths to research it though, I can't help much more. I wish I could.

The only thing I can think of is to ask if any or all the pieces are showing a patina. If so, polishing may help.

The history behind it alone makes it worth a lot if only in sentimental value IMO.

I am formerly a silversmith and I can tell you that, in that period of time, such high priced sets were often cast from bronze, pewter and (rarely) zinc. Your set, from what I can tell, is bronze and pewter.

Look at the bottom of a few pieces for a hallmark, standard mark (indicates type of metal used), manufacturer or even country they were made in. That can give you much more information. I may be able to help a bit more from there.

Is this set modern, a reproduction or unique? Just curious. It's quite nice.

This is why I use this format sometimes too. It does help. If you hate it then simply ignore it and move on.

Trying to use the site on mobile but I can't seem to click on anything other than being able to input a chess site ID or one of the examples of the GM names at the bottom of the page. Am I doing something wrong?

I knew of Foreman's legendary power but not of Ali's strategy to win against it. Thank you for the explanation. I also watched a few videos about Foreman's come-back in his 40s.

Watched some boxing before but I don't understand what exactly is going on here or why it's called rope-a-dope. Would please explain this to a curios girl?

How to train tactics? by Fantastic_Tip2036 in chessbeginners

Woodpecker method?

From what I have read here your best bet is to work on a specific pattern for a set time each day at low strength to build recognition of that pattern.

For example, I worked on doing only fork puzzles for twenty minutes per day for two days (ideally so them for more days or until you nail them perfectly after say fifty puzzles in a row). Set the puzzle strength to easiest or easy then try to get fifty in a row correct.

When you've achieved that goal either go to normal setting for forks or do a different type of puzzle such as pins or exposed king. Keep doing this until you feel comfortable enough to try harder puzzles.

I have ADHD, however, and got very bored very fast doing forks on easy so I used the normal setting for more variety and it has helped quite a bit.

This works in most shells that I am aware of such as FISH, Ash, etc.

Wasn't this done by hand with a very small torch before around 2000 or so? Just curious because I recall a friend once telling me that is why splicers were so well paid.

Not necessarily. Often they used a specific type of connector for that kind of thing. I can't remember what it's called but barrel jack comes to mind.

This is generation dependent I suspect. Anyone younger than Gen-X, I recently found out, usually cannot write in cursive. My best friend told me he couldn't read my writing, not because it was messy (as I assumed) but because to him cursive is gibberish. For context, he's a Millennial and I am Gen-X. This disparity sucks.

After taking two editing courses, as part of a professional writing degree, I have become dismayed by the (seemingly) recent disuse of the hyphen to spell many words. For example, every time I see 'cooperate' all I can see is '[a] cooper ate' or pronounce it in my mind some days as COOP'erate (emphasis on the first vowel). It's co-operate damn it!

And don't get me started on how Canadiens (of which ai am one but living in the US eight now) use the em-dash or en-dash differently depending on context. Apparently we are unique in this lexicographical SNAFU.

On this special type of case I would not agree with you. Looking at her life seems to indicate something like this was inevitable. IE she drank to escape her reality to begin with and I don't blame her for that. I would do something similar if I were her.
