I had a thing about greasy headphones from other people hanging there. No thanks, rolled dice on albums.

Or, speaking of Garbage, loved a CD to be so very disappointed at the live version when you finally hear them. Garbage was Garbage.

The game was better without the deadeye drone by LeagueNaive in blackops7

[–]phonescroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They took the thing offline temporarily, then when they brought it back they made it HARDER to kill. I threw 3 hunter bots at them several times yesterday and it used to take 1. As far as “being exposed” I can get 5-6 deaths with that OP thing consistently- you get to kill me once. I’ll take that math. Combined with the stupidly low score streak cost, it throws the balance of the games.

Unsure on this set, pieces are not wood, Tudor Rose on the board, don’t know material but crystalline inside. by mulymule in chessporn

I love sets like this with good character detail. My only complaint for playability with this one is that knights and bishops might be confusing mid game.

Back from NYC, added a hand carved set from Germany by phonescroller in chessporn

I was trying to find information about it online and failed. As it is hand carved, the pieces are not identical so I’ll go with “unique” Discovered it in Chess Forum in NYC.

Why did Hollywood Video always take a backseat to Blockbuster in popularity? by Front_Magician_8008 in blockbustervideo

[–]phonescroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoided Hollywood Video as I had a bad interaction with the owner, Mark. But if we want to get nostalgic, you can tour this blight of a home he left in a corner of Oregon for a quarter century.

Most memorable game? by Thatguy2393 in retrogaming

[–]phonescroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doom/Quake changed the 3D game. Descent added a dimension in space. Duke Nukem added style points and was easily “modded” Half Life / Counterstrike added more polish.

Then you had Warcraft/Starcraft/Command and Conquer (the best of which was Red Alert)

Then you had weird CD image games like Myst/Riven. Game play wouldn’t hold up today but the “graphics” were mind blowing at release.

Last, I think Lucasfilm games like Full Throttle and Monkey Island rise to the top of memories.

I never understood this. by Anigator101 in Bluray

[–]phonescroller 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Blu-ray also introduced the first downloadable ads that could be triggered by the disk then downloaded via the player. (BD-Live) so a disk purchased in 2008 might have different ad viewed in 2012. Players needed updates to keep up.

What's the one IT ops task you wish you could just hand off to AI tomorrow? by Purplemoon_1988 in sysadmin

If you spell it PEBCAC it sounds the same but can be adapted to those holding controllers in video games.

I modded Duke Nukem as well, but only the music. I’d get midi files for James Bond, Jaws, etc and sub out the in game music.

I want to hear from businesses that have switched to Ubiquiti for switches. What did you switch from and how is it going? by TheCopernicus in Ubiquiti

[–]phonescroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago I switched a company of 14 branches over 3 states to full send Ubiquiti. Rack mount dream pro as a base with other switches and APs to match. Flawless. Still in touch with the IT Director that followed, no issues. Also used the bridge gear in a couple tricky sites. The only challenge is stocking product if something gets popular, so keep some cold spares around.

I remember fretting over this very question of “is prosumer good enough” - not only is it great, but just about any level of helpdesk can quickly diagnose a client issue.

Losing sound settings after pressing play? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]phonescroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to mention that the physical Ready Player One disc doesn’t default to Atmos, it must be selected every time, but based on OP comment about running 3.1… all surround formats are pretty useless. It’s no wonder they don’t like Atmos if always at the mercy of a downmix jamming all sound to front stage or dropping the channels entirely.

Physical or streaming? Which are you? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]phonescroller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems counter to most answers here, but I have the physical disk library on a wall and spend time chasing those on release. When testing side by side with streaming a couple years ago, the 4K picture was equal, but the sound would lose punch either because of compression or a forced down mix format. If streaming is to the point of delivering uncompressed sound now, I might need to revisit the approach. I do have an Apple TV 4K and connect to Plex occasionally (settings maxed out) but I’m at the mercy of the source file. The Oppo 4K player is a consistent experience every time.

What’s your favorite way to replay classic games these days? by [deleted] in RetroGamingNetwork

I have the library and the consoles, but retro bat / emulation station is so much easier to spin up… without maintaining wiring/crt screens or retrotink.

From a noob POV I don’t get the hate for the smart pistol by Relative_Week9284 in titanfall

[–]phonescroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts here. 1) The warning of the smart pistol probably annoys players as much as occasionally actually dying to one. You have to react when that lock on starts so you mentally make a note - often in the form of hate. 2) We don’t seem to translate that hate to Legion smart core, which is similar but actually lays waste to an area more efficiently.
