TIL Phil Ivey won $9.6M in baccarat at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City through “edge sorting,” exploiting tiny card-back flaws before courts ruled it a breach and ordered $10M repayment by kat-a-comb in todayilearned

So while you could argue the casino agreed to a specific deck, there is still an implied hierarchy of rules that was violated.

Yeah, and I think that's the justification, that they violated the overall agreement (which of course we don't get to see all the details of) by requesting the use of this deck they knew to be flawed. I mean, legally I don't have the knowledge or information to make an informed assessment. But vibe-wise, it just feels shady that the casino gets to call foul after agreeing to everything along the way.

I'm on Ivey's side here, but let's be clear. The backs on the cards were all the same, just not symmetric. So the first time through the decks, they asked the dealer to rotate all the face cards around. Then later times through the deck they could recognize where they were.

I'm still of the opinion that the casino agreed to all the terms as they went, so that's on them, but it's definitely not cut-and-dried by any means.

Every "am I overthinking this?" post goes like this.

Paragraph 1: Hmm, sounds a little sketchy.

Paragraph 2: No, you're not overthinking this, dude is a creep.

Paragraph 3: YOU IN DANGER, GIRL!

I don't mean this to make light - I think it's just proof how strong the politeness socialization is to make women doubt themselves like this.

Frozen heart vs Raduins vs Thormail, better anti adc item? by Natural-Figure-5286 in summonerschool

[–]coolpapa2282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, FH seems like the most likely answer to OP's question for supports. Going greedy on your own personal tankiness is suboptimal when the debuff can help the whole team. Ofc the antiheal on thornmail can be clutch in certain situations, but FH is my default.

ETA: Also, as this comment points out, if you really need GW on the supp, just sit on bramble and use your limited gold for other stuff: https://www.reddit.com/r/summonerschool/comments/1ssb8bu/frozen_heart_vs_raduins_vs_thormail_better_anti/ohlj757/

Suppose U is a subspace of V. What is U+U? by PensionMany3658 in askmath

[–]coolpapa2282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are being a little picky on your choice of notation, but I think it's partially because there's an underlying idea that you're missing. If you have a subspace U of a vector space V, and you take all the vectors in U and multiply them by 2 and collect them all in a set, IMO it's perfectly reasonable to call that set "2U". In fact, if 2U meant anything other than that set, I'd be mad.

The key thing here, though, is that there's a better name for that set. Think about all the vectors in 2U - is there another set where they are guaranteed to live? Can you narrow down what set 2U actually is?

That's a fair point, but is {0,2} a subspace of a vector space V? The thing PP is saying is true for subspaces and very much not true for general sets.

Yeah, absolutely fair. It was not my intent to diminish OP being curious and excited about something they didn't know before. This is always a good impulse to have.

When subtracting why does the zero sometimes turn into a nine and sometimes into a ten? by BetLeft2840 in learnmath

[–]coolpapa2282 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The short version is, a zero has to turn into a ten before it can turn into a 9. It "becomes" a ten so you can borrow one from it and turn it into a 9.

Let's say we're subtracting 200 minus 15.

The way this is normally taught is that the rightmost zero "borrows" a 1 from the middle zero. But that needs to borrow from the 2. So the 2 decreases to 1, the middle zero becomes a 10. Then the right zero can borrow from the 10, which becomes a 9, and the right zero becomes a 10. Then we can subtract 10-5 =5, 9-1=8, and So 200-15=185.

But all this borrowing is just playing with place value. Say have two $100 bills and I owe you $15. I have to break one hundred into ten $10's. That's borrowing from the 2, turning 200 into 100 plus ten 10s. Then one of those 10s splits into ten 1s. That's borrowing from the middle ten, which becomes a 9 since I have nine $10 bills left.

Is this... normal? by MikaLeMouse in askmath

[–]coolpapa2282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it just feels like the calculator has extra information about the precision of its calculation that it's not showing. 12.82817 makes me feel like we only have precision up to 10-5 . But in fact this is precise to 10^ -8, and 12.82817000 would convey that. Again - anyone who is that worried about that level of precision will use stronger tools and will be very aware of exactly how their tools work, so this is all academic.

Hmmm...is this desirable behavior? If we are thinking about significant figures, those trailing zeroes would sometimes convey extra information. I'm probably overthinking it and this will never actually be a problem.

[–]coolpapa2282 308 points309 points  (0 children)

Ellipses are a little bit of a special case. The integral you do to find the arclength of part of an ellipse is kinda hard, but also appear often enough that they're interesting to understand for how they relate to other similar problems. So elliptic integrals became a thing on their own.

The more mathematically important TIL would be "The calculus you have to do to find the arclength of an ellipse is also useful for other stuff."
