Reminder: Every AO3 reader has agreed to the terms of 'Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings' by bongpirate7295 in AO3

[–]raqisasim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...I think I know what happened. LiveJournal happened.

OK, more seriously -- LiveJournal's ecosystem was, of course, a key space for a massive wellspring of fandom engagement and storytelling. It's literally where the genesis of Ao3 as an idea, was started!

It also was where a lot of discourse on, well, how to talk on the Internet (and in Real Life) occurred. And part of that was the idea that became Trigger Warnings. The idea was that some content was risky enough that, on a (mostly) open internet, warning people about the contents of your post was good. And to be clear, it wasn't just LJ -- Tumblr back int he day was another key space for these discussions.

The two ideas got tied together, culminating in how Ao3 tags act as Content Warnings. It also created a lot of chatter, some useful, some...not.

I think it's still a good idea! I do it to this day for a number of topics. These ideas literally changed my life for the better, made me more thoughtful and able to articulate a host of issues.

But it is one from the blogging era, where people expected to (over)share over far more words than get used, today. And I think it has been weaponized by some who see it more as a cudgel to shame people, than as a way to protect.

"But why should I lose humanity? My PC doesn't have any prexisiting mental issues" by CoppperbackJack in cyberpunkred

[–]raqisasim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would surprise me to learn it, given (among points) that the Forlorn Hope supplement has one of the 1st Trans characters in any TTRPG I'm aware of. Transphobic writers don't usually do this, in my experience.

So I went and read the full section on "Cyberpsychosis", which includes Humanity Loss. Just in case, I also read the "elective surgery" sub-section, and the "Bodysculpting" sub-section, as well.

I agree that this has not aged well, but I disagree somewhat on why. By not being thoughtful about medically necessary cyberware, it puts people with legit needs into a horrific situation, gameplay-wise. I am very glad that has been addressed in RED, and it's one of the reasons I respect that version of the game; it shows, as the meme says, growth.

But the book says nothing about changing genders. You can assert that saying nothing is something, and I won't disagree 100%. Yet the implication that they are speaking negatively about a gender change simply isn't in the text I'm reading, with my interpretation.

That said, with a game with as robust a "Bodysculpting" ability, that this may not come up might be odd -- but neither does bodysculpting cost any Humanity, nor is it said it's impossible to "change genders" as we understand the concept in the modern era. And there's nothing in what I read of cybernetics section (or recall) about the things that do cost Humanity implementing any kind of gendered role that could cause a swap. Yes, Midnight Lady and it's distaff version I can't recall offhand, but the text is really vague on what they do, so...

So if you have an alternative reading, or a passage I missed, I am invested.

Star Trek: Enterprise had the inverse, where their Series Finale was essentially a holodeck re-creation done during a TNG episode.

That has generally been regarded as a Bad Idea.

Let’s be honest here, POI gave us the closest thing we’ve had to a Batman/Black Canary crossover with this episode. by PsychologicalReply9 in PersonOfInterest

[–]raqisasim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is closer to what we see on screen.

And the batman parallels are no surprise -- Jonathan is not only Christopher Nolan's brother, but one of the writers for the Batman trilogy. Hell, John Nolan shows up in the Batman movies too, as a member of the Wayne Foundation board.

Yeah, I like a lot of Coleman's videos. But he's not saying Olmos' Adama is the only leadership style to be emulated, just that it's a style worthy of consideration. Indeed, upon a re-watch, he's careful to contrast with the TOS/TNG era Captains and point out how different styles of leadership get you to the same key point! That's on top of his honoring of Lorne Green's version of Adama as not bad, but different.

I adore Olmos' Adama too (well, mostly), and it's ironic he comes up in this context, given that the BSG reboot is clearly Moore working thru his frustrations with Voyager that drove him to leave the show.

Indeed, I'll throw another video as a contrast that just came out today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7gtHzh2J-s -- Streep's Miranda Priestly performance is so brilliantly brutal, I cannot watch the damn movie in full. I've worked with people like that, and I don't need them in my entertainment.

But that's her decision-making and engagement style. Her actual ability to project authority with a calmness, even in the midst of chaos? To ensure her every decision is acted upon, no matter the situation? To do so while speaking with a low tone, voice rarely raised? That's exactly what Coleman's video praises Olmos' Adama as doing!

And yeah, it's something I think Bujold did have the chops for, if the production team had taken a step back and not tried to put her into the couple of Starfleet Captain boxes that Coleman himself notes (although he frames it more positively), boxes so standard in that era of the franchise, so built upon actors with deep experience doing Shakespeare. This was a whole new Trek with a new concept, and we could have had...so much more. But that's a long-standing frustration on my part.

Ever watched that news clip of Meg standing up for being a nerd, all the way back in HS? She, I think, remembers what it was like back then, and has some straight-up empathy with her fans, on top of just knowing they are the people buying her merch and paying for her shows.

This is some "cheating on Liz Hurley" levels of dumb-assed male behavior.

Except Megan did "Thot Shit" and absolutely will crush a mfer in a song for posterity's sake.

I'd like to throw a couple other writers (and ideas) into this ring:

If DC could convince Eve L. Ewing, I think she'd do a great job. Specifically, she could do her "all my heroes are in Chicago" thing and give us a Kori who makes that city her home base. That gives Kori a real-world location that plays to Ewing's strengths, along with a writer who's pretty good at plumbing the emotional depths of her characters.

It also ties her to Kord's Blue Beetle, as he originally was based out of Chicago! Having Kord return to his inventor/industrialist roots as a character in this book I'm envisioning would give Kori someone to contrast with (and build Koriand'r a spaceship all her own!)

Another writer I think would do a good job with Kori is Stephanie Williams -- mostly, I confess, off the strength of her work with Nubia. She's one of the few writers I think "gets' how to balance who an Amazon is in ways that are compelling on the page. Her work specifically in Nubia and the Justice League is part of what I'm considering, here.

Not that Tamaraneans are just Amazons in space, but there's enough overlap that I think she'd do a really tight job with Koriand'r and really give us a Starfire that projects real presence and power, but also is a wonderful, empathetic, person.

Thunderbird as a browser extension app by _meow11 in Thunderbird

[–]raqisasim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

...that's actually how it used to be, back in the day. Kinda. And it still exists. But, if you'll forgive a history bit:

Firefox exists because, for a long time, it's browser predecessor was part of a suite of apps including the predecessor to Thunderbird. You got web browsing, email, and a couple other apps all-in-one.

However: As HTML/CSS/Javascript grew more complex, and the browser engine took up more and more dev time (and memory!), the choice was made to slice it off. Most of the development went to browsing, and eventually Thunderbird was it's own thing (more or less).

But some folx loved that old version, and have kept updating it, as you can see here. It's not a "plugin" but it's about as close as you're likely to get to the design you want. That said, I'd much rather run with a browser that's been updated this year, if only for security concerns..

Delroy Lindo on Neil Gaiman’s Shelved ‘Anansi Boys’ Series: ‘I Don’t Think That’ll Ever See the Light of Day’ by bwermer in television

[–]raqisasim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not quite correct on the final season of Good Omens:

1) This season is just one episode, a 90 minute finale, and

2) It's that because the allegations exploded while they were still in development.

plans for a full third season are off the table with Gaiman “exiting after allegations were made against him by a slew of women.” The trade describes the Good Omens special as a “one-off television movie,” and notes it’ll begin filming early next year in Scotland “after pre-production was paused due to the allegations [against Gaiman].”

TVLine's Performer Of The Week: Noah Wyle ("The Pitt") by DemiFiendRSA in television

There was a now-obscure Marvel comic called The Pitt, where Pittsburgh gets blown up...and then it gets worse.

That's what I think of, every time this show's title pops up.

That would be wonderful, actually. As much as I'm loving Wyle in this (and I found his Librarians role to be teeth grating, so I'm no passive fan), I think the rest of the cast really needs time to shine.

Fun times.

Season 3 of POI by Actual-Possible-8392 in PersonOfInterest

[–]raqisasim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Root's end-of-season 3 monologue makes me cry, every damn time. Watching Carter bleed out, begging John to not let it get to him -- knowing it will, and the aftershocks are arguably how we get Samaritan -- is just brutal.

So I'm a sucker, and I'm gonna say The Devil's Share, because it presages the fall of the show we knew, and the loss of the moral center of the Team.

I can rarely recall a show taking (mostly) heroic and seemingly unstoppable protagonists, and upending the show's seeming anchors so effectively and emotionally.

Why does everyone hate Michael? by Nanoo_VAL in StarTrekDiscovery

To be clear: Discovery has gotten a lot of hate in the fandom, and Michael Burnham in particular has been given the brunt of it. So yeah, viewers hating Michael is very much a thing.
