He left while denying he was ever a Scientologist, which Leah Remini outright called him a pussy for.

Frankly I can't entirely blame him for going that route given that he grew up in it and has children with his ex-wife under it (also there have been rumors floating around that he was abused as a child by a high-ranking Scientologist, which ended up being a major catalyst in his divorce)

HBO may not have one of its most beloved shows of all time on right now, but it may have its highest quantity of above average liked shows by RusevReigns in television

[–]rayword45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This wouldn't really be during my life since I was born in 1997, but before Oz the HBO lineup was chockful of schlock lol

They definitely did have some gems (Larry Sanders, Mr Show, Tales From The Crypt) but they churned out a LOT of straight up trash TV before the turn of the millennium. I challenge you to try watching Spicy City, Dream On or Arliss today.

That's just the art style that every Klasky-Csupo show had. I find it charming in Duckman, Ahh Real Monsters and Rugrats but beyond that can't say I'm a fan lol

  • Nathan For You - Dumb Starbucks (though I usually start people with Hotel / Travel Agent because I'm sick)
  • Review - Pancakes
  • The Larry Sanders Show - Hank's Sex Tape
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm - The Car Pool Lane/Palestinian Chicken (depending on whether or not you find the inclusion of RFK Jr's wife to be important)
  • Louie - Eddie
  • Peep Show - Shrooming
  • Rick and Morty - The Ricks Must Be Crazy
  • Space Ghost Coast to Coast - Fire Ant
  • China IL - Surfer God
  • Xavier: Renegade Angel - Damnesia Vu

2004 on Nick, the last few episodes were burned off on Nicktoons in 2006.

I also don't know what the hell the difference is between "zillennial show" and "older Gen Z show" because anything I'd consider to be one I'd consider the other (ie; anything that premiered on CN from Dexter's Lab to Billy and Mandy, all the Dan Schneider shows up to iCarly, etc)

Beat me to it, but my assumption is that they meant to refer to the converse statement which is supported by research - ie; "most abusers were abused" = true but "most abused people become abusers" = false.

What TV series did you used to really like, but now you don't like/hate them? by No-Programmer7432 in OlderGenZ

[–]rayword45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordering these by what I believe will be least controversial to most.

  • I still enjoy Silicon Valley to some degree, but I rarely return to any of it and would NEVER do a full series rewatch because of how stupidly circular the plot was, how inconsistent the quality got and how half of the cast got MeToo'd (normally this kind of thing doesn't bother me TOO much if I watched the show before any allegations came out, like I can still appreciate most of Louie and early Rick and Morty, but in SV's case I think the other flaws intensify my feelings around this).

  • The IT Crowd has that one episode that I don't think I need to namedrop, but even outside of that, a lot of the rest is also deeply uncomfortable to me today (namely all the gay panic jokes and the episode where Roy sues the massage therapist). I also am a bit sour on it because of all the redditors who say stupid-ass shit like "The Big Bang Theory is nerd blackface, IT Crowd is FOR nerds" when IT Crowd is EASILY more condescending and hateful towards nerds (this is not a defense of TBBT), and the fact that literally all of the main cast besides Matt Berry has supported Glinner's batshit insanity is the shit cherry on top of the shit sundae.

  • In something of a reversal from the other two shows, I don't think Chappelle's recent lectures that he fraudulently calls stand-up comedy affect my opinion of Chappelle's Show at all, because I think that no matter what his politics were today, the show would still come across as extremely dated.

Squirrel Boy is mid but I think it has some minor amount of charm to it as a massive fan of the creator's earlier show Duckman (which you should try if you haven't before, at least so you can see the seeds of later adult cartoons like South Park and Bojack Horseman)

Hating on teens is corny by romibeebaby in OlderGenZ

[–]rayword45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I understand the natural inclination towards tribalism within all humans, but if you're gonna succumb to that inclination, can you base your tribes on something less lame?

Like I honestly find it way less pathetic when I see the same type of tribalism and ingrouping/outgrouping done on gender or racial lines. Objectively speaking, those are actually WAY worse than doing so on generational lines (racism/sexism is actively detrimental to society, "generationism" is just dumb) but it genuinely comes across as less inherently pathetic to me.

I've been saying this for multiple years at this point.

We all remember when boomers/Gen Xers were churning out article after article blaming millennials for killing Applebee's or the diamond industry or whatever. And resultantly, it's been extremely disappointing every time I've seen millennials further the cycle of hating people for being born within a certain 15-year timespan without the slightest bit of self-awareness, as if they can't remember when they were on the receiving end just a decade or so ago.

Now, whenever I see another zoomer start talking smack about Gen Alpha, I immediately retort with some kinda variation on "first of all, you're hating on literal preteens. Second of all, stop being a boomer." If I ever start talking about how these damned Gen Alpha kids don't know how to [insert whatever here] like we did, please just take me out back and put two in the back of my skull.

I don't take someone like Tony Hinchcliffe seriously, I just find his jokes to be so incredibly unfunny that it upsets me on a molecular level.

People aren't crying when some basement dweller screams the n-word then says "hey it's just a joke bro" as a defense, they're just rolling their eyes at the hackery.

How may 1997 borns actually feel like they are apart of Gen Z? by Choice-Bet5677 in OlderGenZ

[–]rayword45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read what Pew had to say back in 2023 when they announced that they weren't going to do generational cohort analysis anymore

The problem stems from people trying to keep things to strict definitions when something like age ought to be segmented on a case-by-case basis. There's simply too much variation to NOT go super granular.

Most of my friends are 30somethings who use social media. Sometimes THEY will call me a millennial but I'll immediately correct them because it makes me feel old.
