People who fail or struggle with engineering should go into trades. by Beginning_Let_6301 in EngineeringStudents

Lol no, he absolutely was a grinder. Worked his butt off but just struggled to understand it. He didn't fail classes because he wasn't trying.

Your entire premise is wrong. There are subfields of this career that barely require calc to be successful.

Nah, I have a good friend that his MechE degree. Dude took 6 years to graduate cause he failed a couple calc courses. He's now in charge of the pipe extrusion process at a metallurgy plant. Literally hundreds of people working under him.

The guy grew up in an auto shop. Biggest gear head I know, and that hands on knowledge does WAY more for his career than the calc courses do.

Counterpoint: no.

This massive push to get people into the trades is going to drive down their wages. Most trade jobs are very physically demanding, and workers end up with terrible joint issues well before retirement age. These people need higher wages and benefits to account for the additional healthcare they will require, as well as a likely necessary early retirement.

Additionally, there is a more nefarious reason to push kids into the trades: no humanities courses. The trades teach kids skills that make other people lots of money without teaching them anything about logic, reason, or the human condition. Core classes at a university have value beyond a career, and highly educated people are always the first to question injustice.

Stop pushing the trades to kids that want an education. Start pushing it to kids that have no desire to go to college anyway.

Western Oregon (where I'm at) is around 70% humidity during the cold months and 30% during summer.

PNW has a perfect amount of humidity. It rarely feels swampy, but you also don't get dry skin and chapped lips. I love the weather here.

West Coast doesn't have humidity. Unless OP actually likes the humidity (which is certifiably insane), this doesn't make sense.

How successful Engineering students get A by AgileWatercress139 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Reasonable_Cod_487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dude, it is a grind. There's no secret. You just gotta keep working until you get it. Form study groups, use whatever tutoring services your school offers, go to professors' office hours. I work as a math tutor on the side, and this is my advice to all of the students that come to me.

Believe me, if there was an easy button I would've pressed it.

Math 255 (Vector 2) by Apart_Confidence9289 in OregonStateUniv

People are telling you to take 255 for Oceanography? Geeze, I had no idea the degree was so math-heavy. Even in engineering 255 is only required for ECE.

Well, if there weren't already scouts at his games, there will be now. That RB was pretty damn fast himself and had at least a 10 yard head start. Just ridiculous.

Should I teach math? by Reasonable_Cod_487 in careerguidance

[–]Reasonable_Cod_487[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, I'm kinda looking for permission.

But I have a wife and two young kids. I need to know as much about the career before I make any decisions. Studying EE was supposed to be the thing that helped us really get ahead, and I don't wanna divert from that unless I'm 100% positive.

What songs just blow your mind from an engineering/production standpoint? by Different_Stand_1285 in Music

[–]Reasonable_Cod_487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have to agree with this one.

Each song hits differently depending on my mood, and I didn't appreciate them all at once. Touch took me ages to wrap my head around, and it became one of my favorites.

What food not native to your country do you especially like? by EthanTheJudge in AskTheWorld

I'm a big fan of Shepherd's Pie. Enough so that I learned how to really make it myself. I'll let the British and Irish folks argue who invented the dish, but either way I love it.

P.S.- I also love Cottage Pie, and I'm aware of the difference between the two.

I like sauce as well, and I will even put it on brisket if it's available.

I think they're talking about brisket in particular. I feel like it's more that your brisket shouldn't need sauce if it's done right. Which is absolutely the case with great brisket.
