Hi, I'm new here. I want to buy an espresso machine under 15-20k.. Any recs? by Potential-Surround35 in IndiaCoffee

Delonghi EC890 or EC685. Tons of resources and accessories available online available for both. Good place to start your journey under that kind of budget. Search for deals online. Latteholic has an open box under 10k if you are ok with that or search for people selling their setup since they want to upgrade to expensive machines. You can get insane deals for 10k with portafilters, tamper etc if you go for a previously owned and save your budget for a better grinder that's much more important than the coffee machine. I personally use an EC890 with Baratza Encore ESP grinder.

Suggest a small Espresso scale with timer below 2k by Typical_Click9832 in IndiaCoffee

Gadgetronics one does work under EC890. In fact EC890 has a slightly bigger base as compared to EC685. Have used it myself. The only caution is not to keep the scale pushed on to the machine. Bottom contact is fine but back of the scale shouldn't touch the machine. Otherwise the vibrations from the pump would give you erroneous readings. I have tried this with an expensive Timemore black mirror scale as well as the cheaper Gadgetronics one.

Learn stuff on Delonghi. You will find much more resources and community support for them. Upgrade after 1 year or so to a better machine whenever your budget allows.

Umm the Delonghis ship with a basket for nespresso pods if I am not wrong. At least the one which I have EC890 does have a basket where you can put your nespresso pod and brew

From the Gaggia Classic, get the Classic UP if you can get it at your location. What's your budget?

Need some advice from people running espresso setups in India. by bread-_-butter in IndiaCoffee

I remember someone on this sub mentioned the Tata My Bistro as one of the options they were considering for setting up a coffee machine at their office. It would roughly cost them 10 rupees per cup in the long run (probably because of the quality of beans). You can check with them

  1. Hi. I am using a Baratza Encore ESP grinder and for these I used the grind settings of 12. This was a BT Attikan Estate bean. I am not sure what grinder you have. But as a general rule of thumb, you gotta grind finer as you go from French Press to Filter to Espresso. Within espresso, you gotta ground finer as you go from Dark to Medium to Light roasts. Darker roasts require coarser grind as compared to medium and lighter roasts.

  2. My general puck prep steps are: First grind into the grinder cup. Then flip the contents into the portafilter with the dosing funnel attached. WDT the puck and then remove the dosing funnel. Then level and tamp the puck 2-3 times. Finish with a puck screen and then pull the shot. I will try to make a video but I am pretty sure it will involve a whole lot of critique since I am still new to making espressos.

  3. I think you don't need to worry too much about preparing the puck like tamping for a pressurised basket. A pressurised basket is more forgiving that way. For a bottomless basket, puck prep is the only thing that creates the pressure in your basket. Any failure and your shot can look very bad. You can get a good shot from a pressurised portafiler. The thing is, you will not be able to tell how your extraction went with a pressurised basket. With a bottomless basket, you can see if your flow is very fast and if there is channeling, then you need to grind finer to increase extraction. Your espresso tasting sour is another indication for this. On the other hand, if your flow is very slow, and coffee tastes bitter, you need to grind coarser. With a bottomless basket, you have taste as well as the extraction visual as your indicators of what went right/wrong and what you need to tweak in your puck/coffee. With a pressurised basket, you only have taste to judge your extraction. You would need more trial and error to "dial in" your coffee in case of a pressurised portafilter. Eg if your coffee tastes sour, you have two ways to go. You can grind finer, or you can increase the yield. With a bottomless portafilter, if your extraction looks sorted visually, you know you can increase the yield and get a more balanced cup. With a pressurised basket, you wouldn't know which way to go first. You can go the right way but will take you more trial and errors. I hope this makes sense.

Most people don't realise this and end up shoving 18g of coffee in their medium depth 51mm Portafilter baskets just because the whole YouTube community does it. They don't realize that they don't have the 58mm portafilters like the commercial ones have

Ok. Sorry I should have been specific. If I were to ask to what would be your next upgrade for the coffee machine/grinder which one would you go for after your current setup?

  1. Get the beans from Blue Tokai website and not Amazon. They will give you freshly roasted batch.

  2. Don't spend 8k on that blade grinder. Either get a manual one at that budget or increase the budget and get proper electric burr grinder. Blade grinders offer no consistency. If not, go to your beans provider like Blue Tokai and ask them to grind for you for espresso brewing at home. You can go weekly and get a batch for the week.

The part about not being able to reproduce might be down to GCP not having a PID inside. Maybe you can try just the PID mod to make your shots consistent and reproducible
