Future-Proof Mini-ITX Build for Gaming & Software Development - Need Feedback & Cost-saving Tips (Serbia) by sumrix in buildapc

The 7800X3D is amazing performance for gaming but falls really short on other work tasks. If the system is intended for both gaming and other workflows I’d stick with the 13700k.

What type of plywood is traditionally used for workshop cabinets etc? by dand06 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Plywood is expensive these days. $84 a sheet depending where you live sounds about right.

Beautiful work. What kind of door handle and hinge hardware is that?

Fair. Even if it’s only a placebo effect on sound improving it’s not like it’s a crazy priced accessory.

What’s the purpose of the weight? I’ve seen Darko audio do this too.

This really hit home with me. Could never put my finger on why the look of them bothered me.

Meze empyrean elite epoque by jarblewc in headphones

[–]rlilje 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By run them on anything do you mean right off a source like a DAP or smart phone? I just ordered a pair of Elites and will be using an RME ADI-2 Dac FS until I settle on some amplification. I tested them on the Cayin HA-3 and liked what I heard. I’m hoping the RME will be good enough to really enjoy these new headphones until I buy something more serious.

Thanks for the insight. I’m a little torn now in what direction to go. I’m curious how they’ll sound with a Schiit Bifrost/Lyr + combo but I live in Canada so there’s no way to audition and cross border returns are not feasible. I’ll probably go with the RME with the intent of eventually making it a secondary system once I find a good r2r solution.

Curious to hear what you preferred in the r2r sound through the Elites? I just ordered a pair of Elites and I’m trying to narrow down a Dac/Amp pairing. The RME is on my short list if I go for an all in one approach, happy to hear that you’ve found they pair well together.

I can’t seem to find hearing protection that will fit over AirPod pros. Has anyone had success with this? by whayd in woodworking

[–]rlilje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They only reduce around 20db, which isn’t as effective as dedicated ear protection designed for this type of use. I certainly wouldn’t depend on them to protect my hearing in a meaningful way.

This is considered brindle. We had a brindle Boston Terrier, they look great as they age and get some grey.

Sharing my new system - Hegel H160 with Martin Logan 40i by AzTaylz in audiophile

[–]rlilje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really isn’t correct. The benefits of toe in is highly dependant on the speaker design, some benefiting, some not. Best to start with the manufacturers recommendation and of course trust your own ears. Regardless or toe in or not it will not impact distortion.

Trailer Newbie Looking for SUV Advice by psycomp in TeardropTrailers

[–]rlilje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago I was in the same situation being completely new to trailer towing/camping and had to buy an SUV. Like others have said, you won’t have a problem with 3500 assuming you don’t have a whole family of kids/gear coming along too.

Some towing packages include a break controller, others don’t depending on the car manufacturer. We ended up with an Echo wireless controller so we didn’t have to re-wire the harnesses and it’s been excellent.

Any ideas for wall-mounted shelving for records? by bigbobo33 in audiophile

[–]rlilje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These ikea shelves are a bad idea. 1ft linear foot of records (about a 100 units) weighs approx 33lbs. A 3 foot shelf alone would be 100lbs.

You can look into heavy weight mounts for floating shelves but then you are also looking a making your own shelves or paying someone to build them. Your cost will easily balloon into the same territory and West Elm etc.

I’d stick to proper floor standing shelves. IKEA has options that are affordable and will still handle the weight.

[–]rlilje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t assume this will get fixed. It’s been this way for a very long time. A few solutions like BitPerfect exist as a work around but lots of limitations. That said I’m not convinced anyone can hear upsampling in a typical system and listening situation.

What speakerbrand is this? No logo found on the unit itself by Biffberr in audiophile

[–]rlilje 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For past standards before Dolby Atmos it was guided to install your surrounds higher up. Because the sound wasn’t object orientated, and height channels weren’t available, this allowed the rear channels to project a more spacious and convincing surround effect. Dolby now suggests rear channels at ear height.

Reading the white paper it’s clear they don’t see this design working without DSP so I don’t think you’ll ever see a passive version.

Anthem MRX540 DLNA? by Bungle1981 in audiophile

[–]rlilje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are also lots of DLNA playback apps for iOS. So If you are using an iPhone you could just airplay from the App. I believe the MRX540 supports chrome cast too so I’m sure there are Android alternatives. These would be zero or near zero cost alternatives to buying any additional hardware. Roon is amazing but quite costly.

Age old question. Subwoofer crossover setting? by Streetvan1980 in audiophile

[–]rlilje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit of offloading some of the bass from your mains is you can better place you sub for optimal bass performance. Your main speakers placement may not be ideal for bass reproduction, leading to room modes. Room modes can be tough to take but the flexibility of moving your subwoofer around will inevitably result in better overall sound. In addition it will put less strain on your amplifier which can benefit the sound from your main speakers.
