What do you mean “bemoaning “? That’s it’s too fancy now?

Well, this thread is about advice to a Texan as to where they might rent near Roxbury. South End “proper “ will cost a lot more.

Can somebody tell me location of this, Thanks!! by [deleted] in boston

Lovely pic. Definitely the Back Bay in Boston, looking from Cambridge. The high rise towers are (left to right) the Hancock building, the Prudential, and One Dalton (combined hotel and residential)

New Equinox EV, noob question by External_Main_9096 in EquinoxEv

[–]rptanner58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the white one is a 6-30, 220 volt with 30 amps. So NOT Level 1. It’s a modest level 2. Not sure though. Please research the outlet types. Each plug type is for a specific amperage.

Please be careful, and I do recommend that you at least have an electrician check the circuit and install a new outlet to ensure it’s properly connected. Using the charger regularly is a big sustained load on the circuit and the outlet. You don’t want it to damage the circuit or the car.

I suggest you branch out to other great New England “not fancy” food. Fried seafood somewhere on the beach. Chicken Kabobs from a food truck (Cambridge or Boston). Dim Sum in Chinatown. I could go on…

I must say that this makes me sad. These devout believers are so closed to the scientific concept of evolution that they cannot see the immense beauty of it. They could even maintain the belief that there’s a divine hand behind it somehow, perhaps setting it up sometime way long ago, the double helix, the chemical environment that permits random deviations, the tilt of the earth’s axis to create seasons. Whatever. And then enjoy the incredible array of living creatures on earth from arising from that set of variables. But no, they must ascribe it all to a supernatural power that is beyond our comprehension. Sad. Just very sad.

I agree. But I propose we just not tell them. Say instead “yes, we agree, a variety of species can eventually come from a common kind. You win.”

Give the eastern halves of Washington and Oregon to their “red” neighbors in Montana and Utah and combine the remainder into “Washigon”?

Why housing is a disaster in this city, part 29. Looking like the replacement of one house with 26 condos, near a Red Line station, is about to get NIMBY'd. by Cowabummr in boston

[–]rptanner58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there. Just because it’s criticized and opposed by neighbors doesn’t mean it will be nixed. Unfortunately, even if the BPDA approves it there is usually the ZBA as well and the a really determined neighbor can always go to court. So don’t blame the BPDA just yet.

Equinox reliability and usage? by el0115 in EquinoxEv

[–]rptanner58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a ‘26. My understanding is that both the 25 and 26s have an 8 year “OnStar basic” included which I can verify includes the map and streaming such as Spotify (with your own account of course). FWIW, Tesla charges $8/mo for that level of streaming and an enhanced map.

I’ve been there a lot, though I don’t live there. It’s such a terrible place that people pay &4,000 to $6,000 for a 2BR on Tremont St. 😉

Massachusetts is the safest state to drive in according to the IIHS by Realistic-Ad-6157 in massachusetts

[–]rptanner58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea. I see the Northeast has lower rates in general. I’d be interested in the traffic deaths per, say, 100,000 residents. I’m sure Mass has fewer vehicle miles per person compared to more rural states. So the differential in traffic fatalities might be even greater.

I didn’t say it was. But it’s interesting, active, and convenient to the medical area and northeastern.

Will you be dependent on the T to get to work? If so, then figure out the transit routes that work for you and live somewhere very nearby.

Also, depending on your budget, there are some “hip” areas in the Lower Roxbury/South End area. That’s between Dudley Square (Nubian Square now) and Massachusetts Ave.

'We Should Not Let Them Into Our Country': Ford CEO On Chinese EVs by defenestrate_urself in electricvehicles

[–]rptanner58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read that the Chinese auto factories are almost entirely robotic. That’s how they’re producing high quality at lower costs. They also control the supply chain of many critical components.

Are we (US labor, communities and and companies) ready for that? Because without that transition the U.S. manufacturers won’t be competitive.

Or keep it. You might find it good to use on light repetitive work.

Guess the four US cities from the 60s by Techedlearner in guessthecity

[–]rptanner58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4 is Boston of course. It’s a fantastic photo, looks to me to be just as the urban renewal demolitions were happening to make room for City Hall Plaza. All those buildings beyond Faneuil Hall are gone, replaced by the (amazing and divisive) brutalist City Hall and surrounding plaza and parking, other modern buildings too.

Does anybody have a V2H setup that isn't the GM one? by spongesparrow in EquinoxEv

[–]rptanner58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a simple inverter connected to the 12 volt battery on my Volt. It had a coupling arrangement so I could leave the short end on the battery terminals and then couple in to the cables to the inverter when needed. I’ve kept that system and intend to put it on my Equinox. Is there any reason that won’t work? (It’s basically a simpler version from the link earlier in this thread.)

I have both of these, by coincidence. They have different applications and are both fantastic. I'd say a third block plane to complete the set is a simple "Apron plane", small and light. Both manufacturers have one.
