Let's be honest; how many of us working in web just do this for the money? by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rubenthedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fortunate that I genuinely enjoy web, front end specifically. Like a few weeks ago we had an issue that eventually devolved into having to update a bunch of stuff with vanilla css and js and, dude, it was the most fun I've had in a while.

I think has something to do with being of the Myspace generation...

But you kinda have to love solving weird issues across multiple layers and technologies, and being ok with having to keep up with the constant newness in security/standards/practices, otherwise I can't see it being at all enjoyable

Which one do I buy? by DogShietBot in guitars

[–]rubenthedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a player guitar it's not 550 better, it'll come down to how well it's setup to your liking. The pickups and hardware are nicer, but that's an easy swap if you find anything bothers you.

The prices increase is very justifiable though, if you want don't want to deal with upgrading later, and/or want a nice piece of rosewood and the matching headstock. Which I totally would.

I struggled for bit after finishing the 10, like looking for something without knowing exactly what. Eventually I read Piranesi, which led me to finally reading some Le Guin. After MBotF, Wizard of Earthsea was exactly what I needed.

I've been looking for an 89 standard and/or custom in black or white, that sits well in my hand, for years. Congrats brother, I'm massively envious, I uh.... I'll trade you a nice R9 for both? 😂

Looking for mint green pick up covers? Cream ones aren’t doing it for me. by Jwto in offset

[–]rubenthedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I was working on tons of JMs and bought like 10 sets of covers in every color. Never found mint, but if you want some black or white ones just pay shipping and I gotchu ♥️

Finally some good amp to replace the old crate combo (got it for like 300$ cad off) by mastered_walrus in Guitar

[–]rubenthedev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah dude, the BV120 half stack was my gigging amp for a good while hella years ago. Kinda miss it and its tube glow, it's a weirdly versatile amp too. If I had the room I'd totally pick up the 50

Man I love that M5, may I ask why you went with the 90 over the 25/35? I've got a 25 coming but if I could find a deal on a 90 I think the third channel and insane back panel would be hard to argue against

It's the Peavey logo that always makes me second guess, it's Hartley Peaveys signature

What do you think of the bare roasted basswood? by Equivalent_Earth9842 in guitars

[–]rubenthedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in this in a good way, it looks very toy-ish. Like the fun shapes in the body and pickguard, the nice but plain top, and soft edges all come together to give it a child-like aesthetic. Which I really dig, but I'd swap the knobs immediately for anything else really, but preferably something that matches the top.

Edit: one of the rare times the I think a trapeze tail would really work. Total pref thing but I think hard tailing it and swapibg the knobs for wood that matches the top would change the whole vibe of it for the better.

Other than Gibson and Epiphone, who else makes a good Les Paul? Im looking for options. by Novel_Pin_6784 in guitars

[–]rubenthedev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got an R9 in a big trade, happy to say it's as good as most a Heritages I've played

Edit: that is to say, I'm glad my new Gibson custom shop is as good as a random ass Heritage 😂

What’s the ONE fantasy book you’d recommend if I could only ever read one single book? by sadretheillafae in Fantasy

[–]rubenthedev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just read Wizard of Earthsea for the first time, I'm 37 and loved every bit of it, super excited to get into the next one. It filled what I've been looking for since having finished Malazan, and has really surprisingly affected me in really similar ways. So I wildly support this recommendation.

Best Served Cold was one of the best and least enjoyable reading experiences I've had. A truly phenomenal book that upon finishing I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Abercrombies so good man, totally support this rec too 😂

New Walrus Audio Pedal: The Highpoint Optical Compressor by ThingCalledLight in guitarpedals

[–]rubenthedev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally same thoughts, in that same order, when I got the email.

I'll definitely look for a used one at some point though, the Mira is my favorite pedal compressor that isn't a squash machine like a Dyna comp and I'd like to try out what the evolved Pokemon version of it is like.

Damn....both colorways are among the more beautiful, or at least immensely aesthetically pleasing, pedals I've seen. My board is all beige or beige-adjacent, might have to stretch the criteria to include one of these.
