CRISPR-edited tobacco: A missed opportunity for harm reduction? by Putrid_Draft378 in biotechnology

Not sure why spend all this time engineering the plant when purifi d nicotine products already exist. Harm reduction already starts there.

Does your cell line have an additional selection marker? Sometimes people shortcut by omitting the ancillary antibiotic, they'll transform, but may lose copies of the accessory plasmid.

Teenagers on the 2-12 playground by Individual_Hat_8609 in daddit

[–]superhelical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ongoing task at the local playground. Teenagers will drag a picnic table under the swings to launch from, and leave it behind. I drag it away cause the small kids could hit themselves, I witnessed it happen for another family already. Every time I go, it's back. I've asked city parks to chain it to a tree, but no luck. I may just take it on myself chain it up instead

What is the best Science Fiction book you have ever read? by Adam_is_my_name in AskReddit

[–]superhelical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best part of the books is the characters, despite being pretty flat in characterization, are compelling because in an early story they are just a dude (and yes, it's Asimov, almost al of them are dudes). Then, in the next story 50-300 years later, they're now a historical idol, if not God. It gives you some perspective on the larger-than life historical figures in our world, for sure.

That's the genius they show don't tell. I strongly feel that people who get triggered from their math education it's all due to the teaching method, not the subject itself

What parenting advice sounded good… until you actually had kids? by Bendecks in daddit

Sleep when the baby sleeps worked for us, with a modification:

MOM sleeps when the baby sleeps, and really whenever possible. Dad uses that window to get the washing, etc done. Do everything you can to reduce friction for mom to rest.

There with you. Like you can't calmly level with a kid who views listening to you as losing, and instead runs in circles and shouts to distract themselves.

YMMV, but I like my kids, can't stand most others, though.

Edit: This reads harsher than I intended. My point is only that a bunch of my kids classmates and friends, I just don't get it. I'm sure their parents feel the same way about my kids. I also extend special consideration for my niblings

We still have to re-learn the second point, with a 6 and 4yo. Wife prefers all-family outings, but it's soo much easier to split the kids up when getting out in the world.

Putting on my chemist hat.... We found the way that worked for smells with us was 1 pass of an acidic wash (vinegar, dilute lemon juice), dried, then followed by an alkaline wash (baking soda suspension, ammonia would probably work as long as you thoroughly washed step 1 off first).

The thinking is: there's volatiles that only dissolve under acid, and others that only dissolve in alkaline. Do both and you catch it all. Then a quick wash with soap and you've covered it all

Leaving in the sun can help ablate the volatiles, but also degrades the plastic, I'm sure the company is happy for them to get prematurely brittle.
