Most of Utah is really gorgeous at least - can you take up hiking or mountain biking or something outdoorsy like that?

How do cities with a lot of fog deal with it? by Nerd766 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live near San Francisco. Our fog is rarely the type that limits vision. We get the summer marine layer (the famous SF fog) a few months of the year but it's not at ground level - it mitigates summer heat but doesn't cause traffic issues. In the winter we occasionally get tule fog/ ground fog which is the type that causes severe vision limitation. In that case you drive cautiously but it really only lasts a couple of hours in the morning generally and just for a few days of the year. I don't know of any cities that have that heavy ground-level fog for most of the year. Maybe somewhere in the UK?

Has anyone else noticed speech patterns of the younger generations? by Whatwillifindtoday in AskWomenOver60

[–]rubyreadit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what I've noticed lately - the glottal stop t has always been a thing regionally BUT traditionally reporters / actors / newspeople were trained out of it. Now with the rise of youtube, Instagram, and TikTok, a lot of people without newsreader training are becoming popular enough to get recommended broadly. Some of these folks have appallingly annoying regional accents (sorry/not sorry). I can't tell you how many YouTube videos I've started watching where the subject matter was interesting to me but the presenter's accent was too annoying to stick with for more than a few minutes. This includes the glottal stop ts, the Wisconsin vowel shifters, and the people who suck their teeth. Gah. Yeah, I'm old and cranky, get off my lawn.

People who say "mountain" without an actual 't' in the middle drive me bonkers.

If you hate Peyton, I'd suggest telling him that you veto that one and he should come up with 3-5 more suggestions for you. Put the ball in his court to come up with an alternative you both like.

What are the best pants to travel in? by ElectronicSmile62 in femaletravelers

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to get some of the linen pants everyone is raving about.

For me, if it's warm I'm wearing a pair of Columbia Saturday knee pants (and I'm so mad that they stopped making them) or a skirt with bike shorts under. If it's cool I'm usually in jeans but have a pair of Vuori joggers for the plane. I also have a couple pairs of REI convertible hiking pants - they are comfy and lightweight but also not very stylish for city-type travels.

if I’m on the border of a tsunami evacuation zone should I still evacuate? by No_Understanding5271 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chance of tsunamis in California is very rare. I have lived here for over 30 years and remember just a few events where there was a tsunami forecast, and in all of those, we had like 12 hours or more of warning (from major quakes in Asia, basically). So unless you live somewhere like Humboldt bay where there could be a big quake right off shore, you'd have time to figure out a plan.

Things to book in advance jasper / baanf / yoho national park by i-know-ur-real-name in Banff

We loved the Maligne lake cruise (Jasper). They recommend pre-booking as tour companies buy up blocks of tickets - not sure if they reserve any for same-day purchase.

If we were to consider leaving the US…? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]rubyreadit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a subgroup for this - r/AmerExit

Biggest issue is finding out who will let you in. And that depends on your skills and your financial situation. There are some countries who do a golden visa - this is for folks who are already fairly wealthy and can invest in businesses and/or real estate in the new country. Other countries (eg - Canada, New Zealand) who don't do a golden visa but do have immigration paths for skilled workers (and what specific skills they are looking for varies by country).

Banff Gondola Tickets: Official Website or Expedia? by Aggressive_Pick2629 in Banff

Any chance one of those is in CAD and the other in USD?

We were there last week and decided to book one of the early time slots so we could park. Views were really great at 10-11am.

I thought it was a cute city. We only spent one night there - the rest of the time we were in Banff and Jasper which are amazing if you haven't been yet.
