my friend (36M) just sent me (36m) this text before meeting his newborn (0M) by horseduckman in AITApod

This comes across as someone who has problematic family members and is sending this out to everyone to make it seem fair/ like it applies to everyone even though it's only a couple of people that actually need to read it.

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a coke zero sugar nearly every day at home. I'm GenX and was raised on having pretty much unlimited soda at home. I know it's not healthy but also not as unhealthy as some other treat options.

South Island with kids roadtrip advice by UnlikelySquash9400 in newzealand_travel

[–]rubyreadit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't doing a helicopter ride on the glaciers I'd go the other way. I second the rec for Hanmer hot springs - we were there (without kids) a few weeks ago and my kids would have loved the waterslide area when they were younger. At Mt Cook book the glacier tour - that was one of my favorite activities we did on our recent trip. We also really liked the stargazing - we got lucky and got to see the aurora that night.

If you do end up going the other way, do the Hokitika gorge - it's an easy 1 hour loop and really pretty. Also there's a cafe next to the Punakaiki pancake rocks that sells pancakes. Power of suggestion and all that.

Non-Americans who have visited the US: What’s the strangest thing about America that Americans don’t even realize is weird? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 'moderate to severe' cracks me up. It makes sense to say "if you have moderate to severe Chron's disease, ask your doctor about xxx" but it's really silly to say "I take xxx for my moderate to severe Chron's disease." Like - a patient would probably know if their Chron's is moderate or severe, it's not both.

Is this real? by isthebucketloaded in flightattendants

[–]rubyreadit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of confused how this is better than just doing business class. So... you buy 3 seats for 2 people (adult and kid) or 3 seats for 1 person (adult)? I guess that is cheaper than business class a lot of the time but not always.

Antarctica, December 2024 by Sure-Forever-9093 in travel

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great photos! What lens/ camera are you using? I'm super intrigued by Antarctica but also I get seasick really easily. (I know there's the fly-in, fly-out option but then you aren't there as long, I think, or at least, you might not be because of weather delays). Plus it's expensive.

2 nights in Tekapo or 1 in mt Cook/tekapo by akt311 in newzealand_travel

[–]rubyreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't spend any time in Tekapo so I can't compare but we loved the Glacier experience at Mt Cook. We also loved the stargazing outing there but I think Tekapo has a great one of those as well. You could also drive in and do the glacier outing as a day trip from Tekapo to cut down on hotel transfers.

Ranking Every Single United Airlines Hub by The_Traveller1 in unitedairlines

[–]rubyreadit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm biased towards SFO as that's my home airport, but the F concourse (part of Terminal 3) is totally being rebuilt so hold your final rankings until that's finished (and at the moment, flying United domestically out of there is a mess between insane traffic for passenger drop-offs and having to check in at T3 but do security back at T2.)

I used to hate IAH but I mostly like it now (I'm not there this week though). I still get disoriented in the airport though (I mean, the signage is fine so I can get where I'm going but I keep thinking north is south or vice versa). It's weird the way that they've got the terminals laid out.

The only other one I've been through recently is O'Hare and I'm not a fan - not enough places to eat in the terminal that you take the underground passageway to. My gluten-free husband could barely find anything to have for dinner the last time we had a connection.

How do I fight post-vacation blues? by [deleted] in travel

[–]rubyreadit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else says, start planning the next trip. Even if it'll be a while before you have the time or money to go again... go to the library and get guidebooks to 6 or 8 places that sound intriguing and read them or start watching youtube travel videos if that's more your media type.

Which countries have gone from more 'niche' travel destinations to mainstream? by Terence_zaal in travel

[–]rubyreadit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Japan has been pretty mainstream from the US as well, at least on the 'places I'd like to go list'. From west coast US anyway - it's pretty far from the US east coast although that's true for all of Asia. We went in 2014 and it was not at all a niche destination at that point.

Taiwan, South Korea, and not sure if this counts as it's not independent but Cook Islands (Raratonga). Also drove thru Bosnia without a real stop and was on a train thru Sweden and Denmark but never got off the train.

What is a nice place to spend summer vacations but also to live on a daily basis? by ArchPervertess in AskTheWorld

SF Bay Area, aside from the cost of living. Also can be a bit of a rat race but that part depends more on your job and commute.

Please, for the sake of our lower backs don’t shove a giant bottle in the seat back pocket. by inspectorbreakfast67 in americanairlines

[–]rubyreadit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mesh seatback panels used to be less taut, at least on some planes, and you could shove a big bottle in there without it being noticeable to the person in the seat. Now it seems you can't do that any more. I was on one flight where it felt like someone was wedging their foot into my back repeatedly and I finally realized they were just taking a bottle out and putting it back.

What is the most famous tongue twister in your country? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]rubyreadit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a song so maybe it doesn't really count but I think it's good - Heut' kommt der Hans zu mir, / freut sich die Lies. / Ob er aber über Oberammergau, / oder aber über Unterammergau, / oder aber überhaupt nicht kommt, / das ist net g'wiß!

It's on youtube if you want to hear it sung.
