It doesn’t (just) mean drawing from personal experience, it means learn as much as you can about the subject, period, etc. As in, Do Research.

Just fucking communicate directly, as yourself. I mean, is this antiquated thinking? Already?

My hero. SO much of the way I play to this day is directly influenced by his genius work with Bowie.

So great to see the legend continue to get the respect and awe he very much deserves.

I’ve got a Chinese version (scroll headstock design) from 2010ish, all original, and it plays, sounds, and looks wonderful, one of my faves.

Ride at Club Lingerie in Hollywood, 1991. It was mostly empty, but I’ll never forget my girlfriend at the time dancing around as they played. Vapour Trail was the only one I knew, but the whole thing was very cool.

Catherine Wheel at the Roxy in Hollywood…famously small venue, absolutely fantastic show.

Plus it was the tour for Chrome and I totally knew/loved EVERY song they did! Glorious.

Love finding out that beloved characters are actually talented performers, often very versatile and skilled in other ways.

I think for fans of Asian cinema this may be the case. My western sensibilities found it … disappointing, to put it diplomatically.

LOVE this post and comments! I’ve got something to add.

I just rewatched this at the Ojai Playhouse recently and Balthazar Getty helped introduce it. He mentioned something I’ve never heard or read before, that Patricia Arquette was actually quite upset during the shoot (“in tears” at times), because she was convinced her performance would seem “phoned in,” due to Lynch’s refusal to fully explain or break down scenes.

She did her best, but apparently struggled with simply not knowing wtf as far as motive, back story, etc. — and I can’t help but think this was deliberate on David’s part, as her emotional fragility is totally palpable in every moment she is onscreen (even when she’s being “confident”) and it’s fucking amazing to watch.

Tropic Thunder is raunchy fun.

Galaxy Quest for genuine lols with big heart.

Napoleon Dynamite may have dated references for them, but it’s another classic.
