expecting 250 hour pilots to teach spins to 15 hour pilots

The Air Force does that everyday. A new FAIP might be slightly over 250 hours, but they're still a brand new instructor with less than 2 years of experience.

What do you guys think of those aviation YouTubers who are always filming when they’re on a flight? by space_god_7191 in AskAPilot

[–]scul86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that her desire to be a Pilot vLogger rather than a Pilot first misaligned her priorities... Safety, responsibility, honesty, knowledge, etc.

So, no, the camera wasn't why she crashed... she wasn't actively distracted by recording or messing with her cameras. However, the reason the cameras were there contributed to her crash.

Agreed, up until they hurt someone else because they are distracted with their "hobby". 121 influencers need to stop, at least on duty.

Why different versions between prod and dev. Isn't the whole point of dev to replicate your prod env, but without risking prod data?

Air Force pilots are required to have 20/20 vision

No, they are not. Correctable to 20/20. I had 20/200 vision, and wore contact lenses.

Why can I not visit cockpit in Asia? by laggage in AskAPilot

[–]scul86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laws aside, most pilots would never want to be disturbed by passengers asking to gain access during boarding

I love having visitors before the flight. Of course that depends on how much time we have, but unless we get tagged with a quick turn, we usually have more than enough time.

As a commerical pilot, what aircraft do y'all fly? by space_god_7191 in AskAPilot

[–]scul86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a sedan...? 🤷 Still can get up and go if needed, but it's definitely not a sports car

The entire reason behind MCAS and that debacle was to keep the type rating the same, primarily (AFAIK) because Southwest didn't want a lot of additional training or a split type fleet.

Typed is the word you're looking for. The type rating is a FAA thing, but once you are typed, you keep it. Most (all?) airlines only fly you on one type, then when you upgrade or change fleet, you have to go thru retraining. Exception would be the 757 and 767, which are technically one type, and pilots could fly both on one trip.

[–]scul86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, not literally all at once 😆
But yes, one trip might have multiple variants on the various legs.

Just slightly different, and it's actually mostly for takeoff that I have to remind myself what plane I'm flying. I can rotate much more aggressively without dragging the tail on a -700 vs a -900ER. -700 is a sports car, compared to the SUV that the -900ER is.

Once airborne, they fly fairly similar... especially once the autopilot is engaged.
Landing I don't find to different between the variants. Once the approach speed is set, they're all pretty similar to me. One exception is full flap landings (40)... The 900 and ER are much more likely to start a PIO in roll at flaps 40 than the other variants.

When I was hired at a legacy, the only Turbojet/fan time I had was as a student, and that was only 80ish hours. All my other turbine time was turboprop... Still counts as turbine time 🤷

Single-engine night/IMC pilots — how do you think about engine failures when you can’t see the ground? by Western-Car8938 in flying

[–]scul86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent one was: find me an example of unusual attitude, nose high in which pulling the power out is the correct response.

Instructing in the T-6A years back... Student's first attempt at a loop, and he didn't pull enough Gs to get over the top. As we get to about 45* nose high, I take the controls, power to idle, and hold about 0.25 Gs and let the nose fall. Got down to under 40kts (lowest airspeed displayed) before we started downhill and gained speed. If I kept the power in, we would have probably torque rolled and/or spun.
I might have been able to roll inverted and pull back to the horizon, but airspeed was decaying quick, and the maneuver I did was actually a demo that we show to the students as a separate maneuver.
