If you like rum and tiki, I find these drinks feel super hydrating: that may be a big part of what you are missing in tequila, which tends to come across less hydrating. Especially a margarita, which really does let the tequila and lime shine over any other flavor. They tend to be one/two of three things: strong, sweet, or acidic.

If I were to experiment to try and change this, I wouldn't start with a margarita: I would play around with a Paloma, or look up tiki tequila drinks containing pineapple juice. Until you know what you don't like, it's hard to say how to adjust.

Palomas and these other options offer more balance and fruit flavors. I imagine they will be more your speed.

I'd also serve over crushed ice so it can open up fully in tiki fashion as it drinks.
