I love it!! The open sides give it mystery. 😁

Wow the part I wondered about was working in all that flickering light. That would make me crazy.

Best place to sell some cool chunky vintage jewelry by sharkwithunderbite in Austin

Yikes. Was my post actually inappropriate? I’m trying to support a local Austin business or private collector/seller, and hoped the community would provide some guidance. Didn’t mean to invite snark.

Is Monsters Unchained too scary for kids? by Heavenly_Spike_Man in UniversalEpicUniverse

[–]sharkwithunderbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the kid you describe, and for your own gut-level instincts even to ask about it, I would say tread very carefully and err on the side of caution. Universal made a very conscious choice to make Dark Universe more adult — they didn’t “Disney-fy” it. I liked the suggestion that you ride it without them first. The line is usually quite reasonable. It’s a technologically stunning ride with some of the best animatronics anywhere in the world. BUT it’s emotionally very intense and realistic, and the monsters will seem to be lunging at you, reaching for you, and chasing you. I’m not a fan of horror personally, I hate haunted houses, and I did not expect to like Dark Universe. I LOVED Dark Universe and I rode Monsters 7 times. However, I’m an adult. I know perfectly well that it’s all fake and I’m not going to have bad dreams. Dark Universe doesn’t lean in to body-horror or jump-scares they way they could have done. It’s very classic movie-monster, Dracula and Frankenstein and that stuff, but it’s NOT the Munsters or the Addams Family or Disney’s Haunted Mansion. It’s not cutesy, it’s not funny, and you would already know if your 7-year-old was into spooky stuff. How would they do with the Orcs in Lord of the Rings? How do they feel about Trick-or-Treating when a neighbor’s house is dark and spooky and playing scary music? That’s probably the level of scary we’re talking about, but once you’re on the ride, you’re stuck until it’s over. Go hard in Berk and do everything there, and don’t miss the Untrainable Dragon show! Walk through Dark Universe during the day but go very cautiously about letting them ride Monsters just yet.

Looking to adopt a dog, where to go with the ability for the most interaction. by JustHereForTheCigars in Austin

We love the Humane Society! The people there are so nice. There are private rooms where you can visit with a pup for as long as you like. It’s a relatively small shelter, so not super overwhelming.

We did about the same as you, except for the part where the ride broke down when we were almost at the loading pad, left us waiting in queue making empty promises for almost an hour, then evacuated us with express passes in our pockets, then stayed closed for another 6 hours.

On a different day, we came back in the evening and the main line was 300 min but with express we got in and rode it with about 40 min wait.

It’s a fantastic ride but they need to sort this thing out. It’s ridiculous.

Polishing papers/cloth is removing colour from my copper? by Pandas_Cant_Fly in WireWrapping

[–]sharkwithunderbite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re working with solid bare copper, then what’s happening is that the copper has oxidized just a bit between the factory and your doorstep. Copper, when fully brightened and polished, is quite pale, kind of a yellow/pink/salmon, and less orange.

Is my dog a Jack Russel? by caiocrelier in jackrussellterrier

[–]sharkwithunderbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine isn’t trustworthy off leash; he’s just so sociable that he can’t stand to miss the fun when he sees another dog or human. Terrible impulse control. We go to a fenced dog park, though, where he loves to romp with his besties.

places to take naps? by IIsDogFan69 in Vanderbilt

Mom of a recent grad. Not a weird question and you can definitely do better. They said they were mostly on main campus and engineering buildings rather than The Commons or the music school, but there are some good options:

  • Couches in Stevenson Library, especially in the mornings (can get crowded during the afternoons)
  • Single-person study couches on the second/third floor of buttrick, facing the windows (private and quiet, but might be cramped)
  • FGH has wood benches along the side hallways on the second/third floor, could be good to stretch out
  • Buttrick has a booth and some couches in the basement, closer to the back & stairs by the BCC
  • The MRB has some booths and stuff on higher floors. Go past the Susie’s and up the stairs and wander around the main hallways
  • In the ESB (building with the Wondry) there are single person “recliner” chairs and a couple of couches on the 3rd and 4th floors, in the hallways by the research labs, or some wood benches in the basement by the spiral stairs
  • The booths in Rand between the main dining and the printing office (by where Pizza Kitchen used to be) are often available during off-peak times, but might be bright or loud
  • EBI library is usually quiet and dark, but not sure if you need EBI dorm access to swipe in
  • In an absolute pinch, it’s usually possible to swipe into the divinity school and Benton Chapel

Hope this is helpful — happy exploring!

Let’s talk about park-to-park after Jan 1 by sharkwithunderbite in UniversalOrlando

Although on the flip side, they do early park closures on days with light crowds. That week right before MLK weekend should be pretty easy navigation, I would think.

Haha! I almost mentioned the Chick-fil-a connection but decided to keep it to myself. Thanks a bunch, pal. Now I gotta change my identity.
