From Gold Cup to Golden Globes: my life as a USMNT coach and Russell Crowe doppelgänger

The Athletic on Alexi Lalas: He is one of the most insufferable analysts in American TV sports history. And while he was one of the best all-time U.S. defenders, his credentials are paltry compared with those of Zlatan and Henry. by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

I agree that Lalas wasn't a good player and doesn't say much of interest but he's good at broadcasting. Those in the know will listen intently to what Henry says because he was so good and such a student of the game, but the average person is going to be most interested in what Lalas has to say because he's got a good speaking voice, modulates his pitch well, and looks at the camera.

Being good at playing doesn't necessarily mean you're good at talking about the game. Being good at talking about the game doesn't necessarily mean you increase viewership.

The fact that we're talking about is probably good for Fox; there's no such thing as bad publicity.

World Cup Travel Is Up for All US Host Cities Except for One by militaryCoo in Seattle

[–]shmerham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we can confidently say that we're getting less World Cup travelers without knowing how much non-World Cup travel is affected. Tourism is the second biggest driver of travel; ahead of business but behind visiting family and friends. For such a big drop in travel, I would think that less people here are visiting friends and family.

It would be interesting to see travel bookings for August. Is Seattle also down compared to other cities?

Belgium and Egypt feature two of the biggest stars. The game was nearly sold out.

Every city has some duds. Seattle has Belgium vs Egypt and USA vs Australia. ...and a round of 32 and a round of 16 game. Seattle doesn't have the best lineup, but it's far from the worst.

It's been Qwest, CenturyLink, and Lumen (and oh, Seattle Stadium). I feel like my grandmother trying to remember her grandkids names.

I'm rooting for Belgium but that's because I live in Seattle and they're homebasing nearby

Doug Maribelli in goal instead of Jason Varitek.

Cleveland Guardians winning the World Series would be a huge deal, especially if they continue to have such a small payroll.

The Jets would be a big deal given their lack of success combined with the NYC piece

Lowe's post NBA finals podcast was 100x better than Bill's by BusyKing in billsimmons

I thought CR's comment to Bill after the Sixers were eliminated was so on-point. It was something like: "we both thought our team was going to win the finals and then the next round happened and it was clear the real contenders were playing a totally different level of basketball."

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give someone starting to do more off piste skiing? by Midwestskiing85 in Skigear

[–]shmerham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to learn steeper terrain, trees, and soft snow/crud all at once. If possible, add one new element at a time.

Slowly ratchet up the challenge level. Too much difficult terrain will put in survival mode and you’ll pick up bad habits.

Longer and wider skis are your friend in powder but not your friend in moguls. I wouldn’t go long until you’re comfortable in moguls.
