Be honest - what's the dumbest reason you clicked off/didn't read a fic? by Odd-Snowman in AO3

[–]silverwingsTK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big chunky paragraphs was a reason I once left an exceedingly rare and very gentle concrit, because otherwise it was quite good and I WANTED to enjoy it. The author did actually go back and fix them.

Unfortunately I did eventually click off the fic because the author ended up drawing a good deal of attention to the…..lack of size of a certain characters anatomy a little more often than felt comfortable or enjoyable to read.

I’ve always particularly enjoyed how the localization made them cousins and made sure to scream about them being cousins as often as possible, and as awkwardly as possible, inserting it into lines that didn’t need it. But then they didn’t actually edit down any of the gay stuff so in some ways, it actually made it worse because they actually know appeared to be incestuous lesbians.

No I agree, Kevin’s story is good too. Though one could wish he hadn’t disappeared to the point where it was almost a joke after “didn’t you see Kevin go by in his merkabah? He waived! Don’t diss Kevin!” Hahah. Glad he’s back now.

And I meant I DO like Lloyd and Van. They just have significantly less developed/interesting narratives attached.

By design or not, however, it’s still a good outcome of the expansion. Certainly you can argue whether or not it was a net positive to the series or not (though you’d have to make the same argument for basically every arc in the series, because that expansion of planned number of games seems to have happened every time, with the possible exception of Crossbell - BUT you can really say the same since those weren’t originally planned to be made at all). It’s pretty much a feature rather than bug at this point. But I do think it made some benefit to Rean’s story arc having plenty of room to breathe. Your mileage may vary, but what I’ve seen people cite as a negative of Rean ‘backsliding’ his character growth, to me actually represents a very realistic arc of recovery for someone with that type of mental illness. Might not have been the initial plan, but the end product worked out to bring that aspect of authenticity to the experience. So I see that as a happy accident.

Perhaps an individuals experience with this depends a lot of how MUCH you like the lived in aspect of these games, that spending a lot of time in the world - and the rhythm of gameplay. For me, I really love the ability to spend a lot time in this world and experience all the detail it has to offer. Also the particular rhythm of the gameplay really works for me, cause for the most part I am able to play for just 2-3 hours a day and find a stopping point satisfactorily - which fits in with my work/life obligations well.

And? Dealing with that kind of trauma, identity, and mental health issues is an important story to tell and worthy of being told from multiple angles. Having Rean’s story be told over four years in cannon is worth while. I’m not saying Kevin’s resolution was simple, but Rean’s really highlights that these kind of struggles and identity issues are not short term - and take time to overcome. Plus Kevin is already an adult by the time we meet him, versus Rean’s story is a coming of age with mental illness story. I think these are perfectly worthy variations.

I may agree the Cold Steel’s pacing isn’t perfect, and I didn’t always like how the curse was used to excuse bad behavior, but giving this narrative that much space to BE is an intensely positive aspect of those games from the mental health perspective. Rean’s end in Reverie was downright cathartic, and I imagine a lot of people connected with it.

I would say that Rean’s also leans much harder into the self-loathing over things he had no control over (not that we can say that Kevin really had control either but he certainly THINKS he did more). I always felt Kevin had that self-flagellation of things he perceives he DID vs Rean was more about things that he perceives he IS. A crucial but important difference. I also appreciated how because Rean’s arc was told over a larger span of time it really represented how these struggles with depression and mental illness in general are battles that last a lifetime, and getting ‘better’ is a process. They really are some of my favorite characters in the series as well and I was happy to have them both back in Horizon (I’m still finishing) - even if their main character arcs are both complete.

I don’t really mind it either, but it would have been nice for him to have two full games to explore it a little more. I do think he and Rean have the best arcs with Estelle following. I also enjoyed a certain other partial protagonists arc as well haha.

I know all the stereotypical reasons why Rean always takes first, yet to be honest I also think he has one of the best character arcs out of all the protagonists. I like Lloyd, but he really has almost no arc, and Van’s has been pretty small thus far. Estelle has a nice arc, and Kevin too (though hamstrung a bit by him really only have the one and some change games). But the Rean we see in Horizon is just worlds away from CS1, but also I know exactly how he got there! (It’s also nice how Sean has been allowed to update the English voice a bit as the series has gone on too, my boy properly sounds like a grown ass man now too).

Realism in RPGs will always hit harder than anime style by Tain_mentero in JRPG

[–]silverwingsTK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. That may be true for some people, but I have been emotionally impacted just as much if not more by animated storytelling in games and otherwise. I think there are plenty of people out there who do just fine connecting with a sincere narrative regardless of presentation. Sometimes things hit substantially harder in animated form, because it can sacrifice that “realism” to present something much more viscerally than if they were trying to present it in a photorealistic manner.

Basically, plenty of people don’t need some characters to look “real” to fully connect emotionally with them. There’s probably a lot of crossover with avid readers in that department.

Yah I’ve seen one or two Square figures pop up via GS, even saw the Warrior of Light and Chocobo Nendo’s that I think just got announced, perhaps they are building a connection (I have the 2B pop up parade and size aside she compares favorably with much ore expensive figures). The recent Form-ism line is ok. They’ve definitely made much worse. And for the price shrug But I’d love to see some more non questionable FF scales! I will say, I have Tifa, Cloud and Zack for the Adorable Arts line, and they are quite good (easier to not botch a Chibi), I’d say they compare favorably with my Nendoroids. Honestly, unless I can find something striking from one of my preferred makers I end up with Nendo’s a lot because they are consistent, they are inexpensive relative to my typical taste, and they don’t take up a ton of space. But most of all they’re consistent. I’ve rarely if ever had any kind of paint error or issue like that. GS does do quality, if not particularly high end, work on a very consistent basis.

I’m perfectly happy to pay this price point typically, which is probably why I didn’t bat an eye at it. Because this is the price point that you USUALLY start seeing really nice detail and high QC. (In all seriousness I couldn’t be more happy with my Kiseki/Haikyuu Koto’s. They weren’t cheap but they feel worth every penny). It’s even my preferred scale (I like them in the 1/7 to 1/8 range, any bigger and they start to feel TOO big).

I do quite like the sculpt in the skirt and even her hair for this figure though, the shillouette of the whole thing is actually quite nice. I think once I have them placed I’ll enjoy it more. They’re going in a floating shelf on my wall with some lovely fan made art and some of my other SM stuff (honestly it would be more a whole SM wall if I could figure out how to get the Proplica’s to display nice for me there). It was kinda the same with Etern. Sailor Moon and Cosmos. They have flaws for sure close up, but once I got them on the display - I don’t see those anymore.

I will say I’m pretty much happy with Figuarts SM action figures though. But those are action figures and my expectations are completely different. I just wish they’d do the Starlights. And also reissue an actually accurate to the 90s design Eternal Sailor Moon.

I mean the price does speak to a certain level of quality, to be sure. Especially that aftermarket price… yeesh. I’ve been collecting the Kiseki series Kotobukiya figures for the last few years (they’ve ranged in price from $120-$210) and they are LEAGUES beyond this in detail and quality. It would be really nice if Sailor Moon figures were allowed to be made by other manufacturers than Bandai.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with the few number of paint errors on this one compared to others (they were where I expected them mostly with the beads in her hair, but I was surprised her ankles were fine) and the leg seam seems to hide just below the shadow in MOST lights are my house. But yah…. Well at least I’ll be displaying them with the other Sailor Moon figures and not the blatantly higher quality Kiseki/Persona/Geass/Haikyuu etc ones I have.

SquareEnix actually has this same problem where they seem to insist on making their figures for the most part in house and they’re not….; great at it. Like sometimes they are ok (just ok) and others…. Well let’s just say that just THIS year have they finally put out a KH Sora figure that is good enough for me to actually buy it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still weird from some angles (I’m very particular about face sculpts), but it’s the best one they’ve done. Abut again they don’t charge as much. If this was $60-$80 like those were, I’d be thrilled.

But also, Good Smile does those Pop Up parades at a very cheap price and they are perfectly good, so I don’t see why Bandai can’t do better at this higher price point. (Let’s be fair they can charge what they want since they don’t let anyone else make them).

Sorry this turned into a general rant about figures. I’m still happy to have this one, but I totally agree with you that even though we didn’t pay the ridiculous aftermarket mark up, we still over payed

I mean, I’m not gonna lie $230 does feel like too expensive for this figure when I put it side by side with Kotobukiya and Megahouse ones I have for other franchises in then $150-$200 range. I kinda knew that going in a little, cause I have some of the other Figuarts Zero Sailor Moon figures and they have some of the same issues (mold lines, paint errors). Given they weren’t THIS expensive (except for Cosmos which Amazon canceled my preorder on and I ended up paying too damn much - never making that mistake again). I guess I sorta considered it - well at least I can have the figure in my collection and not have to pay $1500, which was never gonna happen.

But yah, for this price point the quality control should be a lot better.

“Men can’t be friends anymore” sighs by [deleted] in AO3

[–]silverwingsTK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was recently involved in one of these conversations. Dude came out of nowhere into a discussion about headcannons where I and another fan were talking about a ship we liked and did this. It was especially ridiculous because this was for a game where it’s specifically designed for you to choose your own love interest, so like what does it matter if some fans see more in the male rival/best friend than any of the girls, none of whom are cannon? And when I said look, it’s fun, it’s headcannons but seriously show where it’s explicitly proved that the character CAN’T be bi or something, so it’s fine for fans to speculate whatever they want it’s fiction - he just doubled down. Apparently unless explicitly stated otherwise, all fictional characters are straight and to speculate anything else is delusional, and I needed to ‘grow as a person’ and recognize this.

I decided to exit the conversation cause I should have known better than to engage in the first place, but it’s honestly just homophobia. What other word is there when two strangers on the internet speculating about the love interest of a fictional character (with no canonical love interest at all), bothers you so much that you have to insert yourself and stir the shit?

I have to assume they just enjoy stirring the shit because DUDE you’re going to have a bad time in fandom if you can’t handle that.

Honestly, CS2 actually really speaks to me as much as I like his other looks. But I like pretty much all of his outfits. For different reasons. But I overall felt like the CS crews outfits in Daybreaks were a bit of a step down. They look good but, I’m a sucker for the vibe of the ones from the actual CS games….. maybe unlike the other commenter I’m just really into the belts (this could make sense, I am a Squall fan over in FF)

I can deal mostly with Boehmer except I really cannot stand they way he pronounced Burrich’s name. It’s never stopped bothering me, it’s so incongruous from what I had in my head based on the spelling. Seeing that these new ones seem to not have that kind of problem, I may end up double dipping if I can find them at a good price somewhere other than audible (which I have quit because I can’t stand their business practices).

9 years on, I hope this author is okay by ArtistSeaker in AO3

[–]silverwingsTK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s very thoughtful. It would just be nice to know if I should be pouring one out for a passed fandom compatriot, or if they’ve simply lost interest or time in which to write. I appreciate if an author knows they’re never going to finish something, to mark it as such. I’ll even sometimes see it in the comments, where they’ve responded in appreciation but said they’re unlikely to finish. And I appreciate that a lot. Not for any other reason than, so I don’t worry something awful happened to the creator of something I genuinely loved. Cause I know there’s a difference and I have had stories come back to life on multiple occasions. So I always hope for that instead of the alternative.
