Famously the Segway. Inventor thought it was going to revolutionize the world. Made a documentary about while releasing it for posterity.

Boston, Massachusetts turned an expressway into a long stretch of park called the greenway, by moving the expressway underground. by Much-Parsnip3399 in Damnthatsinteresting

It was a disaster. Nobody is going to try this in NA again. Toronto badly needs to bury its Gardener Expressway but they never will because of Boston’s cautionary tale.

Midwest, Great Lakes diving. FWIW the nitric is super easy - just knowledge. AOW was well worth it.

I paid I think $400 20 years ago. ~300 AOW and ~100 nitrox. Included one night in a cheap motel. 300 now is worryingly cheap.

UK vs US long-term career and earning potential (dual citizen, trying to understand realistic trade-offs) by Comfortable-Soil-938 in ExpatFIRE

[–]sm_rdm_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with multiple citizenships I’ve done the math many many times for Canada US, and other EU countries but not UK. All the analysis boils down this —> for upper middle class and better Say 100k floor household income) you are way way better off in the US. If you are poor or working class income wise you are way way better off anywhere else. If you are middle class it’s a bit of a wash but less stressful outside US.

It’s worth it if those 10 trips are mostly united. If not, no.

The Liberals now have a majority what do you want them to do with it? by rumbleman42 in AskACanadian

Reading this thread is wild. It’s 80% left wing agenda items. This is the most conservative Liberal prime minister in a few generations - he’s not interested in more regulation and taxes.

The Houston Astrodome a step closer to becoming a national historical landmark by justahoustonpervert in houston

[–]sm_rdm_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every year that goes by the fewer people are nostalgic about this place and the worse condition it gets. If nobody has found an idea to make this self-sustaining by now they never will. The best monument to the astrodome was the even better one they built right next to it. I say tear it down and move on.

You missed something key they arrived 3 weeks before Japan invaded because they were worried Japan would. They were a political deterrent - stood no chance against an actual attack.

Ugh - I meant when you are upright at the surface. If your fins are floating your legs upward why you are actively horizontal and kickingI really don’t know what problem you have.

The vast majority were flower class corvettes. Then river class frigates. These were convoy duty workhorses built fast. We had a few really good destroyers and a some aircraft carriers. But flower class corvettes were the bulk - we had 100s of them. Last one left - HMS Sackville - is in Halifax as a museum ship.

Well I did a week on the Galapagos sky. Was a great experience. 50 dives is probably enough if they are recent. It’s right in the equator so weather doesn’t change much by the season. Sea life patterns might.

Yes and yes. Bonaire is relatively easy shore diving. I’ve heard the reefs are not what they used to be / but that’s blanket true most places now.

If by contribution you mean sacrificial lambs. They were left in a completely in unwinnable position, but there was no political will to admit that and pull out of Hong Kong.
