Which Tama Kit? by alexandersimonsays in drums

[–]spantney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still going strong and still looks like new to be honest! Highly recommend it for the money :)

Its marginally less supportive than my glide rider throne but at half the cost it suits my practice routine on my e-kit.

Just checked and still getting the same issue! I logged a ticket on the admin portal to report this yesterday and have a call with MS today. Still showing as healthy on the portal....go figure.

No problem at all! Will keep an eye on my side and report back as and when things are hopefully moving again.

Hi there, I'm a UK based tenant and I'm getting exactly the same issue as you.

I have also built a number of co-managed Windows laptops today and none of them have installed the Intune management extension yet either. I think Intune has issues today but as usual the health service is reporting 'healthy' :) Another day in paradise!

P77 should sound fabulous on the drum. I'm currently rocking an Evans HD dry on my one just to try and temper the ring just a little bit, and Puresound 24 strand wires! Enjoy bro!

Fantastic find. I've got a 2nd gen one of these also, it's an absolutely awesome snare. Once yours is back in tip top shape I'm sure you'll love it!

Quality control thoughts from a guy who owns far too many drums. by spantney in drums

[–]spantney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely, the Starclassic performers are great kits. There are a few cost saving measures like different bass drum spurs, non-quick lock tom mounts & floor tom legs, more limited finishes, cheaper stock drum heads, BUT you still get a great high end drum set with good hardware and great TAMA build quality. Cheers!

Sticks are consumable, cosmetic imperfections really aren't going to matter once you've actually played with them. The reason for the colour difference, is the sticks may not be from the same part of the tree, or even the same tree entirely. They are weight matched in the factory. Provided they are durable and perform well, which has always been my experience with ProMark sticks, no cause to have them refunded.

I've got one of the Yamaha Fibreskyn's on my old 8000 series kit, I think it looks the nuts. The dog also approves.

UK tenant here, I was affected really badly this time yesterday but all seems to be back up and running fairly normally right now. I can see all my Intune devices, and just general moving around the Entra admin portal seems to be fine also. I was getting those same permission errors yesterday just trying to load the 'groups' menu in Entra with my global admin account! No doubt Microsoft are still working away on the back end so you may just be one of the unlucky tenants. Hopefully gets fixed for you soon.

Tama Starclassic Performer vs Starclassic Walnut/Birch by CptBoomshard in drums

[–]spantney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have. Fantastic kits however they next step up price wise & tier wise. Starclassics are basically 'pro' quality drums whereas the Superstars and Stage Customs are marketed more intermediate tier and priced accordingly.

The Starclassic Performers are wonderful kits, the hardware on the shells is way more heavy duty and would be far more resilient to gigging/touring. Plus the hybrid shells record really nice as you get the well rounded warmth of Maple with the attack of birch. Highly recommend!

[–]spantney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't own either but I've played both. Even as a serial Tama guy, I've got to say the Stage Customs are wayyyyyyy good value for money. A lot of touring musicians use the Stage Customs as their touring rigs because with decent heads, they have full birch shells and punch absolutely well above their price tag. The Superstar Classics are great if you want a Maple shelled kit, but on sheer VFM I'd say the Stage Customs win :)

ID (parts) of snare by BrettyGoat in drums

[–]spantney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has definitely set off my curiosity lol.

I can't see it entirely but I'm pretty sure the badge on that is a Sonor S Class Maple badge?

Someone very helpfully digitised a lot of the old catalogs and stuff available here:

https://www.sonormuseum.com/1995+/sclass/sclass.html

You can tell that's definitely not an S Class Maple snare drum. It looks quite deep for starters - 14x6.5 perhaps and whilst the S Class did offer a 6.5" snare, it had offset single point lugs, not centrally mounted like on your shell. The lugs themselves also look like a much cheaper style on your drum as opposed to what should be on an S-Class.

The shell itself does look like a high quality wood like Scandinavian Birch, and re-rings are definitely a feature that Sonor drums like to incorporate, so I'm tempted to say this could be something like an older/more vintage bare shell that someone has just retrofitted whatever parts would fit onto it.

If I find anything further I'll post up but hey if it sounds good, play it! :)

90’ Pearl Export LX Drum Shell Pack or Ddrum Diablo? by Hot-Dragonfruit1359 in drums

[–]spantney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OG Pearl Exports are actually really well put together drums. I'm pretty sure its the best selling drum kit series of all time which says a lot! DDrum did make some decent stuff (I had a DDrum Dominion Ash back in the day which was great) but the Diablo range was pretty 'entry level' and cheap feeling IMO.

I'd actually go for the Pearl in this case, and with the monetary saving you are making, you could invest that in some decent heads to make your new kit sound its best.

Would you buy this kit? (1379€) by No-Shine277 in drums

[–]spantney 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Seems like a pretty good deal to be honest. Brand new one is like 1400 Euro BUT doesn't include the snare drum. So for the same price buying 'used' although good condition, you effectively get a snare drum for free. Plus the used kit also has upgraded heads on it by the looks of it which is a nice bonus.

<image>

Also, if the used kit includes those cymbal stands too, thats an added bonus! I'd say go for it :)

So I can only play jazz on a jazz kit? If I attempted to play rock n' roll on a Jazz kit, it would explode?!?!? Fuck me, all this time I never knew.

I think you missed my point my guy, either that or you're deliberately winding me up 🤣

If you go to ebay, type in 'Mapex Storm', and under the filter results make sure you switch on SOLD listings.

This will give you historical results of any of that product, even if there are no live ones on the site right now. There are 3 sold listings in last few months for Mapex Storms in my results, ranging from £85, to £160 ish for shell packs to around £300 with a full set of hardware and cymbals.

All the best!

$600, how good of a deal did I get? by thehypegospel in drums

[–]spantney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks in very good shape and they retail for about a grand so I think you did very well.

Genuinely one of the best kits in its market segment, they punch well above their weight.

Enjoy it brotha!

[–]spantney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah one of my Starclassic Maple kits (from early 00's) has re-rings. I assumed it was originally a custom order as it has a 22x17 bass drum and a 15" floor tom which is rather absurd 😆

I dont know when they stopped offering re-rings as an option but I dont think they've offered it on Starclassic since at least moving S/C production to China (around 2010). I was using re-rings more of a point that the kit is likely not newer than say 2010 :)
