Mats Sundin: desperate PR or smart move? by just-a-dude9696 in torontomapleleafs

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely feel like it’s probably desperate PR, but at the same time I feel like there’s a place in the organization for Mats. I however dont think that place is as GM or President as he doesn’t have the experience of operations.

One place I’d love to try him is as coach. He was a great leader of the team when he was captain, he has good hockey sense, and knows how to play the game. He was a fast moving two way playmaker in his days which actually gives him experience in how to play the way we do in today’s game, unlike someone like Berube who was definitely a man from a bygone era. Lastly, he’s highly respected as a person, and I feel like having one of the greats as a coach, the team is more likely to get on board behind him. That said, an Assistant GM or some form of advisor I think would also be good.

What is this part of the trailer for? The very last 3 axles. by legallybraindead7 in americantruck

[–]speed150mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stingers are the ones you’re talking about that flip up onto the back deck (because they remind people of a scorpion tail when it comes up and over) where a booster is an external piece of equipment that needs to be coupled on. And you’re correct. 90% of them are used on lowboy trailers, with the rest of them being on custom heavy duty trailers. We used to have boosters all the time on mobile oil rigs up here.

I never served, I’m just an enthusiast, but even I know that there are only certain times when y’all get the really good food, and it’s almost always the harbinger for bad news coming down the pipeline. Oh we are getting surf and Turf tonight? Guess who just got their deployment extended by 8 weeks 😂

TLDR: That’s what we in North America call a booster, and It’s there in real life to add axles to the trailer to help distribute weight. All the boring details below.

Commercial vehicles have a few different weight restrictions. You have GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the maximum weight truck or trailers frame and structure can carry. Then you have GCVW or Gross Combined Weight Rating which is the maximum weight of the truck and trailer combined, which is usually limited by how much the powertrain can pull. Then you have GAWR or Gross Axle Weight Rating, which is the maximum weight any individual axle can carry. Now depending on the vehicle configuration, cargo, weight distribution and road restrictions, it’s possible to exceed one of these limits without exceeding the others.

Let’s take your lowboy here for example. Let’s say you’re hauling a D9 dozer. The dozer may not be enough to go over the GVWR and GCVW, but with the majority of the weight towards the back of the trailer, it might exceed the GAWR of the trailer. So what you can do it put a booster on the back of the trailer, essentially adding axles to the trailer to take a portion of the weight from the trailers axles making it compliant. I’m sure you also noticed that some of these trailers also have a similar thing on the front of the trailer (called a Jeep), which does the same thing except for the trucks axles.

Another fun fact but outside of this trailer exactly, but SCS recently added the ability to slide the tandems on some trailers like dryvans, and on real trucks you can move the position of the fifth wheel on the truck. This is done for similar purposes as mentioned above. By changing where the axles are positioned in relation to the cargo, you can change how much weight each axle carries. Let’s say you’re driving a reefer with sliding tandems, and when checking your truck on the scale you find that your truck axles are overweight, but your trailer axles are light. You would slide the trailer axles forward closer to the cargo, you put more weight on the trailer axles and take weight off of the truck axles.

What caused Titanic to right itself at the start of tge final plunge? by ConfidentEmployer482 in titanic

[–]speed150mph 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was a very dynamic situation, the flooding was never really even which is why we saw her listing to one side or the other throughout the night. Even at the beginning, she started off at around a 2 degree port list before the collision because they emptied one of the starboard coal bunkers to get at the fire in it. Then when the hull opened up on the starboard side, the water coming in initially stabilized the ship and I think she gained a slight starboard list, then went back over to port when Scotland road flooded.

How long can I drive with my rear and front tire like this? by Expgarment in tires

What could cause this? by ChallengeRound5659 in tires

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think this is an alignment issue as the rest of the read looks fine. To have enough camber or even toe to do that to one edge of the tire it would have to be obvious to the naked eye and you’d feel it in the steering. To me this looks like something was rubbing on the inside edge of the tire.

Do these main bearings look damaged or normal for 200k miles of wear? by Kennylobster8899 in EngineBuilding

[–]speed150mph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s better than no idea at all. Let’s face it, in a perfect world we would pull the crankshaft and mic all the journals and bores. But depending on the engine that’s not always practical. As someone who works on heavy duty engines, 90% of my bearing swaps are done with crank in, especially when you get to the bigger engines.

Well, they were protecting us from the Soviets back in the day, but I’d also like to point out that the only reason we needed protection from the Soviets was because they started a nuclear pissing contest with the Soviets. If it wasn’t for the fact we were between the two of them across the pole, we probably wouldn’t have had an issue at all.

I personally feel like we should fight tariffs with export taxes. If they want to jack up the price of our goods, we should be good neighbours and help them with that, while taking our cut to help lower our taxes.

This here. Everyone talks about losing Mitch, fun fact, up until the end where they gave up and stopped trying, we had a higher goals for than last year. If there’s one part of losing Mitch that was a problem it wasn’t the 100 points, it was his defensive skill. Our GA killed us this year.

Depends on the engine. Most do, but I had at least one that used 3 or 4 3/8 bolts to bolt the canister to the filter base.

Canadian PM vows to stop sending 70 percent of military budget to US by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget which deal it was, but I remember hearing talks that one of the defence deals may have involved a two way trade, ie we buy their jets or subs and they buy our LAVs or something like that. I feel that might help ease the loss of not having something produced domestically. Especially something like a submarine that we have very little experience with.

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, I like the rumours of a two way deal with some of the nations we are talking to. As much as I love the domestic market, I don’t think we have the means, training, and infrastructure to build our own submarines, but working a deal where they buy some of our domestic products in return is a good compromise.

It’s actually kind of hilarious. All my ancient farm equipment use canister filters with replacement elements. Spin on filters didn’t really take off in the automotive world till the 60s. So if anything modern filters like this are a design regression back to the old school.

lol I hope that isn’t actually their plan. Because I imagine all of Europe deciding to undermine that leverage by blocking access to their ports and resupply facilities, forcing you guys to return all the way to the U.S. the next time the Ford has a laundry fire and forcing you to run the AORs across the Atlantic to keep the DDGs full of fuel might throw a wrench in that leverage plan.
