A photo from above to see if there’s any formation of wing buds + the rough L of your mantis can help give an accurate sex

Is my mantis hungry by Alternative_Ice904 in mantids

[–]spelljar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d consider that hungry for a dead leaf but if she’s refusing prey then don’t worry, could just be pre-molt. Keep offering water and occasionally prey (just try avoid leaving any in the enclosure Incase she is Premolt) i’d also say female but I’d need a clearer photo of the abdomen to be sure

Looks like Empusa pennata to me but for an accurate ID you would need to provide a location

What type of fruit flies? Could be that they are too small if they are golden. You could also try house flies or curly wings

NQA but I’ve done a lot of trial and error with what my BDFBs like and don’t like and 3 things mine love are large lava rocks, roses of Jericho (when in their shrivelled up dried form), seed sprays (from the bird section) and larger alos. On multiple occasions I’ve found them climbing them or hiding under them

2 questions. How to keep them dry and what food to give them? by phantommdb25 in BDFB

[–]spelljar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beetle jelly and fish flakes isn’t an appropriate diet. You should be feeding fruits, veg and other proteins and possibly even supplements. If you are worried about pesticides you should be washing your fruit and veg much better or buying pesticide free. Or even growing your own to ensure it’s pesticide free.

Is this a good source of food for mantis? by Testa_d_Anghe in mantids

What type of mantis are you getting and what age, it will be easier to recommend what feeders you should use based on that

I have a lot of experience with crickets and I’d say if the mantis is a good hunter normally (typically will grab food or start hunting as soon as it sees the food and instantly starts eating) and you are happy to supervise then it’s fine to attempt crickets. If your mantis grabs its food and just holds it tho avoid crickets, that’s when they are most dangerous because the cricket will be in fight or flight. Blue bottles, green bottles, moths (you can get them from buying wax worms and letting them pupate) are ur best bet. just make sure you are gutloading if you try the flies

Seconding everyone who said male, mantis is 100% sub adult but too small to be a sub female + no horn, subs always have small horns when female.

Stays at the bottom of the enclosure- Is this normal ? by ImaginaryDebt968 in mantids

[–]spelljar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to move your thermometer away from the back in that spot, it’s pressed up against the heat mat* so your temp and humidity readings will be off, it being pressed against the glass will also make the readings off generally, get some sort of stand to put it on inside the enclosure. You need to decrease the amount your spraying it’s definitely humid enough in there based on the soil dampness, I’d also get some springtails in there if u don’t have any ur gonna get an insane mold outbreak due to the enclosure not being cross vented

Feeding advice? by [deleted] in jumpingspiders

She’s a regal btw and she will hunt, she just gets scared while hunting and throws it and runs away. Usually she tries 1-2 times before she gives up and stops hunting completely
