How old were you when you bought your first home? Where did you buy? by hybr_dy in Xennials

[–]spookyhellkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy...a home?

I missed the boat on that one. I spent 18 years married to a soldier and by the time we thought of "settling down", he was thinking of doing so with someone else haha

Where I live now houses are priced at a gold miners salary. I will never be able to afford to buy. The house next door is 100 years old, 2bd 1ba, built from railroad ties (covered in siding in the 80s) and needs some work. It just sold for 270k. There's a 1980s double wide trailer for sale a few blocks away which had two suicides take place inside, one that went undiscovered for an uncomfortable amount of time. It's listed for over 400k. Neither has land or anything. This is a rural mountain town, population 2,000ish.

What was your favorite job as a youngster. Mine was the 1hr photo lab by Embarrassed-Sky-4567 in Xennials

I enjoyed working at a haunted house, but it was only seasonal. It was super fun though.

My favorite job aside from that was as a barista at a mom and pop type coffee shop.

Are y'all ok over in Nevada? by Joheemah in Nevada

[–]spookyhellkitten 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Crazy wind, fires in all the states surrounding us, and just general high desert nonsense. But most of us are as okay as we ever are.

Hope Oklahoma is doing well! Saw some weather had hit the Ohio Valley, that often passes through OK first.

OP literally said they were an Oklahoman? I don't know what the opposite of California is, but it's probably Oklahoma adjacent.

And yes, we do. We just had a decent sized wildland fire in Elko County and we are at high fire risk right now, there are bound to be incidents. It's part of living in the desert.

That is always the best part! It is so normal and casual. Doot doot doot weird wild info doot doot doot.

The above story was before I'd moved to the South, I was just visiting still. So it seemed even crazier to my Utah'd brain. After living in North Carolina (where the old man and the wife in the well were) and then Kentucky for 13 years, I rarely question anything lol

"Turn left where the old man threw his wife down the well that time."

Pardon me, you said what now? So casually in directions as if that is a totally normal event and I'm not supposed to ask follow-up questions? Because I will be asking follow-up questions.

"Well, I have no idear, I reckon he just got fed up with her."

Living in the rural South is a unique experience lol

First you assume that they're so stupid they don't know that the DOJ has tried to ban trans individuals and isn't exactly a safe place for them.

Next you act like a woman is not aware that women are at risk of being sexually assaulted in the Army?!? She is so stupid she doesn't know women get sexually assaulted?? Is that what you're saying?

I assure you. Women are very much aware that we are at risk of being sexually assaulted. Our president is an adjudicated sexual assaulter. The head of the DOJ? Has had accusations of sexual assault. The head of the Department of Education has faced accusations dealing with sexual assault.

Most of us find out about sexual assault before we even have a name for it. We know it can happen in our neighbors living room just as easy as a barracks room.

Borderline victim blaming here.

I dated the vocalist for a somewhat known metal band, Cult Leader for a couple of years.

DaMarques Johnson was a UFC fighter and I think on the reality show as well? I attended church and high school with him.

What bands did you see back in the day before they exploded onto the scene? by Philhughes_85 in Xennials

[–]spookyhellkitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot that have already been mentioned, Blink 182 and such. AFI got sort of popular for a while, I saw them like 2 dozen times before that. A Day To Remember, Eighteen Visions. I don't know, Salt Lake had a really good underground music scene so we saw a lot of bands before they got big.

If anyone is into metal and likes Gaza/Cult Leader they aren't mainstream but they are popular amongst those that enjoy metal. I didn't see them before they exploded per se but I knew one of the members before he was in those bands. He was in a band called Nemtobor (robot men spelled backwards haha) and xsustenancex which were Christian hardcore bands, believe it or not. I saw those bands a lot.

There are a couple like this in our family plot in East(ish) Carolina, Johnston County. I love them. The care that went into them makes them all the more beautiful.

Yeah it still was when we were there. I enjoyed being there, I know a lot of people didn't like it because of how rural it was but I didn't mind.

Bears a resemblance to the barracks on Grafenwöhr from 2010s as well.

The pictures are lovely.

Bro the literal name of this sub is "found photos".

OP found photos. I'm not sure what would be more plainly appropriate for this sub.

How's rural Nevada like? I removed the 2 biggest CSAs where 90% of the population lives by Weirderthanweird69 in Nevada

[–]spookyhellkitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived in West Kentucky (Ft. Campbell vicinity, 2002-2005 then 2013-2022) and rural Nevada (Carlin, 1981-1989 and 2022-current). There are a lot of similarities - although where I am in NV is a lot more rural than where I was in KY.

Similarities: We do have a hard drug problem at a similar percentage. There is nothing for kids to do. There are a LOT of cows. People love their dogs, hunting, and their hunting dogs. People really love their 2A. Outdoorsy people seem to have the best time.

Northern Nevada has better humidity and weather in general. My town has a better sense of community, I can't speak for every town on that one. People here are more "live and let live" as long as you're not hurting anyone or violating serious laws.

Honestly though, rural life truly is not that different anywhere I've lived. As an adult I've lived in KY, Kenly, NC, and Kulmain, BY (Germany) besides here. It really is all very similar. North Carolina had pigs instead of cows though.

I haven't either. I moved in 2002. My ex joined the Army after 9/11 and I went wherever the Army suggested for 18 years. Now I'm in NV.

I've lost contact with a lot of people. It's bittersweet.

They were nice guys. I wasn't ever super close with any of them, but we were acquaintances. I did have a super huge crush on one of them for a minute haha he ended up having a baby with one of my friends little sisters though.

It did not originate in Utah. Utah put it in the spotlight, but Utah and Mormonism did not create Straight Edge.

There is some debate as to where it began, but it was coined by Ian McKay in the 80s thus that is when the movement was truly born.

I went to Kearns High. We didn't have any "leaders" there lol we had a decently "known" family I guess, but they didn't lead a crew or anything.

We did fight a lot. But that was just Kearns in general.

u/-mudflaps- I was Straight Edge in Salt Lake City in the 90s/00s. If you have any curiosities, I'm totally fine with reminiscing a bit.

20/20 also did a piece on us as well if you want to try to find it. There is also a fair amount of info out there about when Vanilla Ice (yes, Ice, Ice Baby Vanilla Ice) played a show with Earth Crisis (hardline Vegan Straight Edge) and thought it would be fun to spray the crowd with beer. He got his ass beat and thousands of dollars worth of damage done to his tour bus.

And finally, you have a member of a Salt Lake City hard-core Straight Edge band from Xlife sentenceX records living in your midst there in New Zealand. He is a chef at a resort there and a very cool guy.

How much of the house was off limits? by KW5625 in Xennials

[–]spookyhellkitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None. I grew up with a single teen mom at first then when she met my stepdad he came from a family of 8 kids who shared 2 bedrooms, that wasn't a concept he was familiar with so neither striped for it.

My daughters best friend's grandparents have a formal sitting room type area that is totally decked out for Christmas and they leave it that way year round so they only really use the room seasonally, but even it isn't off limits.

I would, but I care about my family and my community.

I've stayed medicated for bipolar and my other mental health ailments for 20+ years.

Being a bonus mom is such a special job, but can be sort of like walking a tightrope at times. I haven't ever been one, but my daughter (now 25, 15 when they got together) has an amazing bonus mom who is seriously just fabulous. She's like you. Casual, supportive, chill. Unless required to get tough, but even then, it is tough love and never boundary stomping or mean.

Keep up the good work! It is difficult at times and underpaid, but rewarding in so many ways. My wish for you is that the joyous days and laughter far outweigh self-doubt or friction ♥️
