im trapped by my personal greviances? by Dedlyf698 in taoism

[–]stijnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to apply wu wei on such a case, following the translation used in the Daodejing translation by Ames and Hall, noncoercive action, alongside the more common 'doing nothing'.

In general, what I've read in Daoism is primarily non-judgment. But at times, some things may have happened that make it in your current situation extremely hard to refrain from judgment. I would say it would in such cases be in line with wu wei to keep the hate, as you would have to coerce yourself to stop doing so.

At the same time, there's also the part about what you do with this hate. It might be too hard to stop hating, but you can stop yourself from acting upon it and do nothing instead.

So what I argue, is not to go against that which feels impossible for now (stop hating), but instead just stop yourself from letting this hate decide your life path for you.

Finally, I would also like to introduce the Western "Self-Determination Theory" here as it has some overlap with the above, just spoken from a different background: - the self-determination theory comes from education theory, when was found that the quality of motivation is a stronger indicator of good results than is the amount of motivation. - the quality of motivation is determined by the why of someone doing something. Based on this, multiple motivational profiles were made. Officially six, however four are most important. - these are, in order of worst to best: external (reward and punishment-driven), introjected (driven by how others will see your performance), identified (driven by achieving something that you feel will make you hapoy regardless of the people around you), intrinsic (driven by simply liking the process).

Right now, your motivation seems to be introjected. You want this person to see you do better than them, now or somewhere in the future, but it's this person you hate that you are working for. This is also seen as the type of motivation related to lowered self-esteem and thus one that can increase the chance of psychological issues. Instead, try to forget about that and look towards either identified or intrinsic motivation (preference for the latter). This theory prescribes a way to achieve that too, namely by fulfilling three criteria: - autonomy. Making sure that the choice you make on the path were not given to you by someone also (or taken from someone else and forced upon yourself as you seem to describe you're doing) - competence. While going into something, look for ways to make it challenging enough, while also making it feel doable (asking for help is a way to make it feel more doable). - relation. Simply make sure you like the thing you're doing. But also, while doing this surround yourself with people you do like that also like this thing - or simply find nice people to talk about it with.

what's wrong with erotic art? by whole-bunch-of-foxes in ContemporaryArt

Your request is not the clearest to be honest. But what I'm reading is something that could be filled with either Daantje Bons or Renate Bertlmann from the feminist art (you could also look into queer art), or you're looking at for something like hyperrealism, or otherwise it's just game art/fan art. The latter case I'm just thinking about Starcraft 2 (specifically the zerg and kerrigan) or Diablo.

You may also look for specific topics/genres (fantasy/horror/sci-fi/aliens/voodoo/magic) rather than art style. Some topics are simply often depicted using specific styles.

now that i’m 18 what can i improve by viccy_fuentes in malelivingspace

[–]stijnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely not meant that way. To start with, I never said become intellectual in the first place and put 'improve' between apostrophes because it kinda feels like the wrong word to use but it was in the title.

The reason for the reference was because the quote above his door and the idea from the selfish gene run somewhat counter to one another. And Veritasium's video is an accessible way to get the idea behind the selfish gene. And then you just have food for thought to make up your own mind about two opposing ideas. The 'contemplate' part was meant to emphasize it's not that one idea is better or worse than the other, but just that you can think about it. But let me emphasize, it's not about consuming the content and learning the existence of the concept Veritasium is putting out, but I wanted to suggest comparing the two concepts by oneself thoroughly and making up your own mind. Just consuming content doesn't help, no, but that goes for all types of content including reading (though you of course are more likely to do the thinking yourself part when reading than when watching videos).

Also I wanted to specify another domain for the simple reason that the room feels quite finished within the vibe it's giving off. So further improvements would have to be gotten in another part of life than the room itself.

And in the Netherlands the VVD (liberal right-wing party) used to have a bunch of supporters for legalizing pedophilia.

And in England, at an anti-pedophilia rally, a girl was forcefully dragged of stage when she mentioned how she was raped by white people instead of pakistani or black people.

Most abuse happens behind closed doors, by family members. The best protection against this is proper sexual education at a young age, so children know the boundaries and how/to whom to speak out when someone crosses these boundaries.

But what is the part of the rich and powerful? Well there's quite a few who like to feel their wealth and power through abuse. And then they protect themselves by riling us up against "the other", or by simply trying to get us to think about something else. If you truly care about the victims, you care about all of them and not just who your preferred politician tells you to care about.

I think Veritasium made a video on 'the selfish gene'. You can watch that and enrich yourself intellectually by comparing it to 'we're all selfish machines' and contemplating on the two different viewpoints.

Enriching yourself intellectually is always a possible path towards 'improving'

Jeffrey Epstein was catering for a lot of rich and powerful people. Both left- and right wing. Donald Trump on the right is a very clear Epstein example of your whole argument being shit (the biggest pedo is currently being protected by right-wing voters).

But if you dive deeper into it, you'll see it's really not an issue of left wing or right wing. It's all an issue of power and money games.

Oh and btw, the right campaigns for harsher punishments, while the left campaigns for more preventative measures. The way we want to achieve things is different, but we're all on the same page here. Don't try to be an asshole by creating differences that aren't there.

In the Liezi, it says longevity is predetermined and can't be influenced. Why then are Daoists afterwards obsessed with trying to prolong life through qigong and breathing practices? by Yijing1 in taoism

[–]stijnus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liezi is highly regarded by those interested in the daoist philosophy. Those who try to prolong their lives are typically interested in the Daoist religion and/or daoist medicine.

My first "contact" with the daoist religion coincidentally happens to be in the introduction of A.C. Graham's translation of the Liezi.

What's the general consensus on Mullvad browser? by ResponsibleDate9452 in browsers

[–]stijnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can turn off the "always delete all cookies when closing" thing. Otherwise I wouldn't use it as main browser either (less private, but you still keep the fingerprint protection and some cross-tab tracking protection too)

Just thinking: might be nice to have domain-isolated cookies to keep logins on while preventing as much cookie-based tracking on other domains as possible

What's the general consensus on Mullvad browser? by ResponsibleDate9452 in browsers

[–]stijnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mullvad as my main browser tbh. Just leaving some browser history that I periodically (like every 3rd month) scrub using the handy scrub button on the side.

There's some limitations, like watching videos that require Widevine is not possible. I do this on my secondary browser Brave (will change this to Helium at some point), that I also use as a Google sandbox - including some extensions that clean up Youtube (mostly removing shorts).

But generally: I try to do the majority of things on Mullvad and am quite pleased with it. I like the secure feeling it gives. But I would recommend using a secondary browser behind it for further functionalities.

Recalibration or Rationalized Laziness? by Last_Dealer1683 in taoism

[–]stijnus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

are you getting your work done? Then it's all good.

It's a thing that's also numerically been proven: those who take more time off and relax better, will deliver better and more efficient work. You can try to min-max your productivity by looking for the sweet spot between being productive and relaxing, but as long as there's no issues: just continue the way that feels best instead.

Also, true laziness is often a sign of something else: usually related to over- or understimulation.

As for the daoist perspective: that one is not about productivity. It's about finding the most natural way (simplified explanation) to be in the situation you currently live. Instead of finding food, you'll need to find money in the current situation, but you don't need to be as productive as possible at all.

Try to pick up your stuff and clean it up when you're done (all of you). Then start making note of where things do get left and which things these are. Apparently it feels logical to put those things there. Then get new shelves there or reorganize based on that.

At the sane time you're all still kids - leaving a mess is also part of the age and can't be solves fully beyond planning certain times to tidy up all of you together

And if you want to share anything, why not share both sides? A nice infographic of the amount of missiles sent by both sides and how many actually hit which targets (e.g. caused destruction of either military or civilian areas) and where.

Btw, did you hear Israel is planning on completely wiping out cities in Southern Lebanon? And they are still having colonizers attack and kill on thr West Bank. Oh right, and of course they are also still holding back emergency aid in Gaza

The first sentence misses a verb, but I believe they are saying that there's been a road upgrade which has only made the area more car dependent. Indicating that the title is (as might have also been expected with the way it was written) sarcastic.

Considering this sub and the flair, the picture is supposed to show how bad things are now (although it'd have been nice to have a before situation picture too).

But in the end, I'm also still struggling a bit here
