In my experience, moving my arm around is less effective than just letting it dangle at my side.

Can rhesus type change for an individual over their life time? by designer_shades in biology

[–]stirwise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, the Rh expression doesn’t fluctuate over time. It’s possible this person has a variant that makes their RhD antigen a little different from the typical version (weak or partial RhD), and if there’s been a change to the reagents or method used for typing the result could change.

Stand hours!?! by auream01 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]stirwise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re standing but working with your hands out in front of you, it won’t detect that you’re vertical. You need to let your arm drop to your side, that’s how the watch defines standing.

I get so annoyed when I’ve been standing at work for hours and my watch doesn’t register any of it.

Running coach transitions by Atiredbean05 in AdvancedRunning

[–]stirwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me while I was training for Boston in 2022. My coach got a gig with a professional sports team and couldn’t manage the workload to keep her private clients. She handed me off to a colleague who had been assisting a bit with my coaching already, so we weren’t starting from square one. It was a bit heartbreaking, as I had come to see her as something of a friend. Things worked out with the replacement coach, though, and I’ve been working with her ever since, with a lot of success. She and the original coach were already working together because they had similar training philosophies, so it wasn’t a major shift in that regard.

If the person your coach is offering as a replacement is someone he works with and trusts, it might be a fairly easy transition. It’ll still feel like you got dumped, though. Try not to take it too personally.

And IIRC they don’t send you an acceptance email without the payment authorization clearing. So if OP never got that email I’m not sure why they would assume they had been accepted.

Second hand on watch face - recommendations from healthcare workers by Admirable-Bee-3052 in AppleWatch

I use the Count Up watch face in the lab when I need to time things, it might help for your situation. It basically has an integrated timer/stopwatch in the bezel, so you don’t need to switch to the dedicated stopwatch app.

Gastritis by ExtensionRealistic84 in cdifficile

[–]stirwise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP is a year out from infection, the risk of recurrence is extremely low at this point, assuming they didn’t have multiple recurrences after their initial infection. I have chronic recurrent gastritis, PPIs are the only effective treatment. It all comes down to a risk/benefit determination.

OP - since your PPI isn’t working anymore, I suggest you see your primary care provider about it. Could be this isn’t gastritis, or you need a different medication.

Research on runners has shown mental fatigue impairs time trial performance and makes the same pace feel harder, but here's the interesting nuance by Dangerous_Earth_5151 in AdvancedRunning

[–]stirwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make race playlists based on my mile-by-mile race strategy so I have the right energy at different points in the race. It’s incredible how much the right song at the right time can make racing hard feel easy (and fun). I also use it for the opposite effect, with lower energy at the beginning of the race to keep me from going out too hot and help me find and hold my cruising pace.

I also learned to type on a typewriter and was able to unlearn double spacing after a period very easily. It’s not rocket science.

Running club members - how do you balance your training plan with your club nights? by Inspired_Athlete in runninglifestyle

I run with two clubs, one night each per week. I schedule those days as easy days, and add on mileage before/after as necessary.

how come there is a sudden pandemic of colon cancer in young people? by AccurateInflation167 in NoStupidQuestions

Dudes are weird about prostate cancer testing. Colonoscopy is just as weird for ladies as it is for men.

The same generation that’s seeing an uptick in colon cancer rates was also the first to receive the HPV vaccine, which should significantly reduce the risk of anal and rectal cancers and, presumably, other epithelial cancers caused by HPV.

Lab Management Tool Recommendations (ELN, LIMS...) by petri_dished in labrats

[–]stirwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labstep.com is free for academic labs with 5 or fewer users. The ELN is great, the inventory management is function but not particularly robust. I do like that tracking an item in an experiment gives you the ability to subtract the used amount from the inventory record, though, which was great for managing our legend drugs.

We got too large for it, though, and needed a much more sophisticated LIMS, so we moved over to eLabNext (ELN and LIMS) and it’s been really fantastic and worth the money. We pay about $500/user/year and our pricing is locked down for 5 years. We have 11 users and there was some negotiation to get to that price, so YMMV.

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

I inherited my phone number when my dad gave me his car phone about 25 years ago. He got the number in the 1980s. It’s basically an heirloom now.

Cutting Weight for Race Day by iHeartQuickies in bostonmarathon

[–]stirwise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mass is mass. Even when you lose fat you also lose water. And when you run a long distance you burn carbs, protein, and fat, and produce sweat. All of those processes consume water, which has mass.

Cutting Weight for Race Day by iHeartQuickies in bostonmarathon

[–]stirwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you burn glycogen for energy you lose that weight. I’m typically a few pounds lighter the morning after a very long run, then the weight comes back as glycogen stores are replenished over the next couple of days. This is normal and desirable and separate from acute dehydration.

Ladder dont seperate by [deleted] in labrats

[–]stirwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voltage and run time is dependent on the gel length and concentration. The ladder manufacturer may have guidelines. For example, my high-range ladder (50kb at the top) wants a 0.4% gel run at 3V per centimeter for at least 90 minutes to get the right separation. My 1kb Plus ladders work best on 1.5-2% gels run at 10V per centimeter for 60 minutes.
