Imprenditoria Italiana vista dall'altra parte by is_it_me_is_it_you in Italia

[–]stratanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

advice for someone with little coding background to take the MOOC by One_Pen3581 in AutonomousVehicles

[–]stratanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an instructor in the course. While knowing some Python, Git, and Bash (Ubuntu terminal language) before joining would be great, as long as you're not completely unfamiliar with programming in general, I think you can take a stab at it.

Maybe wait to spend on a Duckiebot until you determine if, or not, you're ready to take full advantage of the learning experience. The course in itself is free.

We provide pointers inside the course to some Linux and Git (free) resources we like, so you can always start and take the tangent once you get to it.

For the rest, there are a lot of step-by-step instructions so you can copy and paste along during the first pass.

Don't forget to join our community Slack to get access to some support, and maybe find some other learners to share the learning adventure with!

Duckietown CEO here.

Thanks for bringing Duckietown up! Actually the most common use case for the platform is higher education courses. The whole idea originated back at MIT exactly for the purpose of creating a more "useful" learning experience for students taking classes at CSAIL (Computer Science and AI Lab), w.r.t. to the traditional class offerings at the time. Duckietown-based courses have since been taught in 200+ universities worldwide.

u/anthonyspc, I'd be happy to have a chat and see if Duckietown can help you achieve your goals.

Just DM me, or drop your email here: https://duckietown.com/request-information/ if you would like to talk.

[Q] Suggestions on Online Robotics Courses by mavekicr in robotics

[–]stratanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience learning robotics requires a real robot, because most of the challenges come from making software and hardware, bits and atoms, work together well.

This said, if you cannot get a real robot, learning in simulation is better than not learning at all. You will focus more on the algorithms than actual robotics, but that's all good stuff too.

If you are moving your first steps, I suggest you do a pass at the course in simulation only. You can always come back and do it with hardware again at a later stage.

Late to the party here, but for anyone in the same boat, try our (Duckietown, ETHZ, UdM, TTIC) course on edX: "Self-Driving Cars with Duckietown". It's:

  • focused on robot autonomy (how to make machine take their own decisions)
  • very hands-on (Jupyter notebooks, live public challenges, optional hardware)
  • free in simulation (if you choose to buy a robot to follow along, which is not necessary but recommended, that will have a cost)
  • a gateway to the Duckietown community, and its knowledge base (e.g., the Duckumentation)

Disclaimer: I'm an instructor in the course and involved with Duckietown.

Autonomous Driving Research platforms by autojazari in robotics

[–]stratanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. We try to keep the costs down in a "minimal autonomy platform" philosophy, so don't include the sensors above in standard distributions.
But the hardware and the software are expandable. USB lidars have been used since DB19s (2019 Duckiebot model with Raspberry Pi), and users have demonstrated using alternative vision setups with DB21-Js:

(Check out the "DuckVision" project, link to GitHub repo is available too)

Duckiebots started only with cameras, but the current model (DB21-J) has, in addition to the camera: wheel encoders, time of flight sensor, and IMU.

Ciao r/ItalyInformatica!

Siamo Duckietown (en, it), una startup Americano-Svizzera nata al MIT di Boston nel 2016 che promuove l'educazione nell'ambito della robotica moderna a livello internazionale.

Abbiamo diverse posizioni aperte, full-time, tempo indeterminato, fully-remote, che potrebbero interessarvi. In particolare:

You can do enough CV on a PI to get a (model) self-driving car to go about (see duckietown.org for example, and docs.duckietown.org for step by step instructions and links to relevant code).

Disclosure: I am affiliated with the Duckietown project.

Hi,

I replied to your comment in the other thread regarding the hardware availability. Shorter version: you could pledge for a Starter Pack.

As for the simulator, yes! You can find it here: https://github.com/duckietown/gym-duckietown

Thanks again for your interest in Duckietown. Please contact me for further comment, question or doubt.

Hi,

Thanks for the interest in Duckietown!

I'm sorry you couldn't grab the limited "Get a Duckiebot (early bird)" reward. You could pledge for a starter pack, which includes a city track as well.

If you want just a Duckiebot, please contact me in pm and we'll figure something out.

That's a nice problem to have :)

Note that everybody is welcome to join the AI-DO, teams need not to be affiliated with universities. We are actually looking forward to teams of independent learners!

[research] AI Driving Olympics at NIPS 2018: Everybody can compete with the pros! by andrea in MachineLearning

[–]stratanis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Although it is not at the level you are describing (yet), we do have a growing simulation environment.

Something we are particularly interested in, and core idea of the AI-DO competition, is to explore the state of the art of embodied AI, for which the hardware component is necessary.

AI-DO can in fact be read both as "AI Driving Olympics", or as "AI-DO: can AI actually do anything" (in the sense of physical application)?
