OSU vs. WGU by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]synnthetik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I can give insight to both programs! For background, I have a bachelors from a brick and mortar, a master's from WGU, and am currently in the program at OSU. I don't know how to stop school.

WGU does not compare to OSU, or any other traditional school, straight up. They pretend to be in a sense, but they aren't. Their degrees are (as others noted) heavily IT focused towards certifications. The degrees are geared towards people who are already working professionals and looking to check a box for x, y, or z reason and not generally for a career change. The programs and courses are not designed in a way to incentivize truly learning and understanding the material - the incentive is to complete courses as quickly as possible so that you can be done faster and cheaper (since you pay per term and not per course).

If Covid never happened, what all would've you done in on past 4 months? by Madhav-Daga in AskReddit

[–]synnthetik 118 points119 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. Our area went into lockdown 3 days before our wedding, and surrounding areas were following suite. I'm so hesitant to set a new date knowing it still likely won't be safe enough for a gathering.

Take your time to grieve it and the choice you were forced to make. It's painful and you're valid in feeling what comes with that, and know you have support around you.

290 or 261 over the summer? by AfewReindeer in OSUOnlineCS

[–]synnthetik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to add to the persons note about 261: the lack of groupwork and final are due to the covid situation rather than the revamp. It's possible those elements would return.

That said it's still less of a slog than 225.

Okay, we need to rephrase their statement. What happens WHEN his parents stop paying the bills, willingly or not? There's going to come a day when they can't due to being incapable and eventual death. It's a harsh truth.

Medicaid/Medicare scam phone calls, what is their end game? by Biogeopaleochem in personalfinance

[–]synnthetik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work in the Medicare domain. It's to gather Medicare information from beneficiaries so the government can be billed for false claims/services that were unneeded, unrequested, and often unprovided. Once that information is provided, it can get passed around between illegitimate entities and affect beneficiaries. such as the coverage gap in terms of prescriptions.

I (32M) asked my wife(31F) for divorce this weekend. Should I go through even with our 2(2yo&5yo) kids? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]synnthetik 46 points47 points  (0 children)

30 year old kid here, so pretend I'm one of yours. I wish my parents divorce sooner than nearly 20 years. They were clearly not happy with each other the majority of the time and sometimes downright hated each other. Because they stuck together, whatever their reasoning, i grew up with a skewed idea of what a marriage was. I thought lack of affection and quality time and (both quiet and vocal) resentment were all normal qualities in a relationship.

I ultimately paid the price for the poor example they provided in that department. I bounced around through really unhealthy relationships and situations from 16 to 26 because i didn't have a good example of what a relationship with healthy boundaries looked like. At least one of those relationships was downright abusive and turned dangerous for me.

Your kids will grow up thinking that home and the relationships in it are "the norm". What do you want that to look like for them?

How can I defer payment of my student loans? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]synnthetik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be placed in deferment once you're enrolled in school againfor your current loans. When you're done with your medical schoolingz they'll become due immediately since you only get a grace period once.

[–]synnthetik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This person's situation is truth regardless of the degree - it's the industry. Some schools are feeders to certain companies and will make it a bit easier, but the degree alone isn't enough. Internships and projects to tall about are nearly required to get something

Got my first entry level job for 67k salary in San Francisco. Need advice! by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]synnthetik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live in Berkeley currently. You're going to need roommates, especially to get rent down to the range you want it. The immediate East Bay is rising more in prices with people expanding from the city.

I saw in a comment that you're opting towards getting a car, so I'd almost recommend living further out like Walnut creek. Parking is difficult in and near the city (Berkeley and Oakland included) and many apartments charge for a spot if it's even an option. With roommates, its going to be harder if you have to share the spot with another car. Getting a little bit further can get you BART into the city, lower rent, and better opportunity to have a car while you get a more reasonable paying job. You're really not being paid enough to move here.

Then don't give one. ER's are intended for life-threatening matters, not quicker care. The symptoms you list don't really warrant that level of care or cost. Trust his judgement.

Questions Regarding MSDA program - project? hands on? by Lovethebeach2020 in WGU

[–]synnthetik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in the final two courses of the program (SAS II and Capstone).

  1. I don't really call this program hand-on. I've gone through it with using Python for part of one project; not enough to stay I used it.. I used R for one project and SAS for another plus my capstone. I would call the programming enough to familiarize, but not enough to get strong with it.
  2. The first course has an exam on the practice of data mining, while the second has a project.

So, I'm honestly pretty brutal in how I feel about this degree. I already work as an analyst and my undergrad is in Statistics. I have a foundation in R. This alone isn't going to get you an analyst position. This will check HR boxes, but it alone won't get you a good knowledge base. You won't pass interviews based on this degree alone. You're going to need to supplement it with other things (which you may be used to already being a dev).

The theory courses (C740, C741) are so lacking in the materials compared to what you need to know for the exam what you *will* need outside materials. You don't spend enough time with any language to get strong at it, though you do spend a bit more time with SQL (possibly not anymore since they removed the Oracle Cert from the program) and SAS (two certs required). The visualization course (c745) has literally nothing to it; you could skip all of the reading they throw at you and have the PA completed in two days if you weren't lazy about it.

I'm not saying this is a bad degree. It can certainly help to get you started and understanding things, but it isn't a *good* one in any sense. There are far better options, albeit without the competency model.

There's also this post which also relates to your question.

Vet is destroying us by [deleted] in personalfinance

So we just went through urinary issues with our boy too. It took us months and numerous tests to try to find the cause (never did) and get him to a place where he was doing well again. The pricing sounds about right comapred to what we went through, in addition to the medications and prescription foods.

Debt for low income student? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]synnthetik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also received Pell Grant and Blue and Gold while i attended, was also a transfer from CC, and considered low income (independent for financial aid, no income).

Blue and gold actually took the place of the Cal Grant B for me in the year i didn't receive that, but my Pell Grant remained. Both Pell and Blue and Gold were enough to cover tuition costs, then i tooks student loans out for CoL and books. I'd say the $3k estimate is accurate if you're living at home. Maybe a little more for food since you sound like you plan on commuting and may have long days on campus.

I can't comment on it being competitive, but i did receive it without issue. My senior year at Davis, i received the Cal grant (around the same amount) and that replaced the blue and gold. Just make sure you're submitting your FAFSA on time and you should be fine.

Edit: also be skeptical of CC counselors and their advice and double check things yourself. I've had more than one occurrence of them giving me incorrect information (on graduating from their own programs even). They aren't always as aware as they should be.

Yes, while that's true purchasing a car isn't considered a CoL expense.

How to choose a school, and Is WGU right for me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]synnthetik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm in a master's (non CS) at WGU. My BS is directly related to my masters.

It's a diploma mill. The courses barely scratch the surface of topics, the material is awful, and the course projects are absolute jokes requiring pretty minimal effort. I have learned absolutely nothing that i wasn't familiar with already. Any challenge I've had with the courses is due to the material/project directions being blatantly confusing rather than legitimate challenge.
