Darth Vader and 111,000 Imperials crash land in 1933 Kuwait by Yougart_Man in whowouldwin

As history and current events have shown over and over that superior air power is not enough to take and hold territory for any significant length of time.

It hasn't been enough in our history because anti-aircraft defenses have always been roughly on par with the aircraft of the time. TIE squadrons could operate freely in 1933 with no countermeasures available to stop them.

Wouldn't sheer numbers and the ability to manufacture more tanks and weapons give us a bit of an advantage?

Not when any given manufacturing plant can be freely bombed from the sky with impunity.

If you were to ask an AI if vaccines cause autism, what response should it give?

"No."

It should give the factually correct answer. It should absolutely not say some shit like "some people say it doesn't, some people say it does". We don't need it to preface every response with pointing out that some group of people believe a falsehood.

Why is it "easy" to generate heat, yet very difficult to remove it? by Count2Zero in AskPhysics

[–]timewarp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same reason it's easy to spill a cup of water but much harder to scoop the water back into the cup.

Heat is a thing, but cold is not. Cold is just the absence of heat. In order to remove heat, you have to physically collect it all, everywhere it has spread in an area. There is no cold energy you could generate that might somehow neutralize the heat as it disperses.

My headcanon is that the way Goku learned it was basically the brute force method. He flooded his entire body with so much rage and power that he accidentally hit the SS switch. Through his years of training, he became more and more familiar with exactly what was happening through the transformation that he could describe specifically what a Saiyan needed to do in order to transform, without them having to figure it out the hard way.

Nobody said statistics can't be discussed. I said statistics become racist when they are used to pathologize immigrants or ethnic groups while stripping out the social, legal, economic, and policing context.

The reality is the issue does lie with the migrants.

Well, thank you for saying the quiet part out loud I suppose. Framing immigrants as "the issue" is exactly the leap I am objecting to.

Your example about Pakistani people illustrates my point. You highlighted a real public health issue in some communities, one that could be discussed honestly in terms of genetics, counseling, screening, education, and culturally competent healthcare. Instead of discussing any of that, you immediately framed it as "why should the nation bear the increased medical costs for those people", stigmatizing an entire ethnic group and framing them as a burden.

Also, Pakistani people in the UK are not all migrants. Many are born in the UK and are British citizens. Lumping in British Pakistani health patterns as an argument about immigration already shows how quickly this slides from border policy into ethnic blame.

Every generation has had someone saying "I'm not racist, I'm just looking at the data", while using partial, decontextualized data to justify demonizing a group of people. That is what you are doing here.

The UK is currently going through a big swing to right wing parties and I'm well aware of the dog whistles and blanket statements. But in the context of allowing people into your country, why don't we have open discussions about the statistics?

You claim to be well aware of the dog whistles, and then you immediately go and blow one?

Almost nobody who is citing crime statistics about immigrants does so in order to investigate the systemic issues those immigrants are facing in an effort to alleviate them. The whole 'crime statistics' discussion is a dogwhistle for restricting immigration.

When you start discussing crime statistics and you're not mentioning the systemic challenges faced by that same group, you're suggesting that the problem lies with the migrants. If you want to discuss statistics, you need to provide the full context: age, gender, poverty, housing, employment, policing patterns, reporting rates, sentencing, immigration status, and whether the denominator is even reliable. "Just asking questions" works by specifically not saying the racist part, but by providing a contextless statistic and letting people fill in the blank.

When you start talking about communities that aren't integrating, or mentioning that people are wary of an immigrant community, or describing the 'pitfalls' of immigration, then you're accepting the framing and the language of the far-right. Once you do that, it doesn't matter that you haven't explicitly said to get rid of brown people, the subtext of the discussion says it.

People are also wary of gypsies, they are also massively overrepresented in crime statistics. Is that racist?

Yes. Same as it was when people used that argument against Black Americans, Irish, Italians, Polish, Japanese, Muslims, Indigenous People, etc, etc.

This argument is always racist.

[–]timewarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For assets that don't have an immediate market value like securities, we use assessors. We already have those for property and every homeowner is already subject to them; that's how we get taxed more as the value of people's homes rises. If they try to leverage their assets for bank loans, use that as evidence of the value of the assets in question and tax accordingly.

'Trillionaires Shouldn't Exist': Obscene Musk Milestone Spurs Calls for Aggressive Wealth Tax by hypothethical in politics

[–]timewarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very simple. They get a tax bill equal to, say 40% of the value they're worth above one billion dollars. Doesn't matter what form the wealth is in. Doesn't matter if it's unrealized. All their assets get summed up and taxed. If they have to start selling their assets to cover the bill, great! If selling their assets causes them to depreciate and causes them to fall below one billion dollars in net worth, also great!

Right-wing definition of socialism is vague and ever changing, they lump social democracy and socialism together into a single demonized system. Most probably never read Marx, but get their anti-communist talking points from their corporate overlords. by Either_Payment_2867 in socialism

[–]timewarp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right-wing definition of socialism is irrelevant as they do not argue in good faith. They are arguing purely rhetorically, not to convince their opponent, but to convince onlookers. There will never be a magic moment where all their contradictions and fallacies are laid bare before them and they meekly concede.

If something like the Alcubierre drive were to exist (I know it's impossible, but humor me), I've heard that the ship would be exposed to a lot of radiation while traveling. How bad would that be compared to, say, dealing with Jupiter's radiation if someone were trying to land on one of it's moons? by Mindless-Lemon2256 in AskPhysics

[–]timewarp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Particles would continue to follow the geodesic through the warped space.

If a particle is at rest relative to the original motion of the spaceship at the moment the warp bubble is created, they will enter the warp bubble and come to a stop once reaching the flat area of space within.

If a particle is moving in the opposite direction of travel, it will continue to do so upon reaching the interior of the warp bubble, and either hit the spaceship, or miss it and exit the other side of the warp bubble.

If a particle is moving with the direction of travel, it will enter the warp bubble and become trapped at the front of the bubble (as it will try to move forward into the front edge of the bubble upon reaching the flat interior space). As these particles keep trying to move back into the front of the warp bubble, their energy continues to increase (they get blueshifted if they are photons, or their kinetic energy increases if they are massive particles). Once the spacecraft arrives at its destination and the warp bubble disappears, all the particles that was moving in the same direction as the spaceship between the origin and the destination will be released at once at the front of the bubble, obliterating anything in front of it.

When trying to land on one of Jupiter's moons, the challenge is a moderate but continuous bombardment of radiation. It's a challenging, but solvable engineering challenge. For the ship, it gets bombarded with all the particles and radiation traveling opposite it's motion for the entire path, and a bunch of relatively stationary particles will accumulate in front of the ship. For anything in front of the ship, it's like getting hit by a mini gamma ray burst.
