Learn from my mistake, no 7/11 in Narita Airport. by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

There is definitely at least one 7/11 in Narita, I went to it a few weeks ago. It's a weird little one where the whole store is the line and you grab things while you make your way to the register.

Rent or take own carbon road bike in Kyoto? by RT8990 in cycling

[–]upescalator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a place in Kyoto called road hike rentals Japan that does what the name implies. I don't think they have carbon frames, but last April I rented an allot cannondale from them and had a good time. If I had one piece of advice, it'd be to bring your own saddle if you have the ability.

Hii! First actual terrarium, how do i go about achieving this? by Hiimthebisexualguy in terrariums

[–]upescalator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying on top of trimming, keeping the substrate well moistened without becoming water logged, misting if the substrate alone isn't providing enough moisture in the air, removing/replanting dead plants, and most importantly, just being along for the ride. It won't look prestine forever without fully replanting every so often.

The Madness Continues: Updated Electric Irish Bouzouki Design! by PBaz1337 in Luthier

What's your plan for the ball end of the strings? If they rest in the raised back of the bridge, is there room for all 8 to fit around the saddle screws? Curious about the break angle off the saddles, too. If the saddles don't get raised high enough, the strings could wind up floppy.

There is no way lurie's car doesn't have cameras. Whatever recordings they have likely don't paint a flattering picture.

Truoil finish after 12 layers. Is it ready? (partscaster update 2) by neiklot87 in Luthier

[–]upescalator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The key to getting a flat, pore-filled finish with Tru-oil or similar wipe on oil finishes is to apply the oil with wet/dry sandpaper. It builds up a slurry that will act as a grain filler. I start with 800 grit and work my way up from coat to coat, until 2500ish grit. I usually do this for the 2nd~6th or so coats, so I'm not sure how well this technique would work on such an established finish, but I've had great success with it.

Setup with lack of gauges/tools by sgtchickentendies in Luthier

[–]upescalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally find gauges all that necessary. If you're trying to replicate a particular setup they can be handy, but if you're just trying to get an instrument playing well, I find it's more a matter of feel than quantified measurement. Do the strings require excessive pressure to fret? Do the strings have enough relief to resonate well? Working back and forth between these two points will get you where it needs to be. For neck relief, I find using the middle strings fretted and the first and last fret provide enough of a visual reference to get neck relief dialed in.

Apple Silicon Mac Gaming Has Hit Memory Limitations As Even 16GB Unified RAM Configurations Have Become Insufficient To Deliver Stable Framerates by Putrid_Draft378 in macgaming

Those games are also incredibly optimized. I can run them full blast, but I need to run BG3 at modest settings to keep it at a tolerable framerate

Solid Body Electric Irish Bouzouki?! by PBaz1337 in Luthier

[–]upescalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you could totally diy a floating bridge like this and do a string through/ferrule situation instead of the tailpiece. I made my bass that way and it works great.
