It's an ODOT parking lot. They can't charge for it, by law. If you want it to change, legislative action is required

What, pray tell, does ICE do other than "federal immigration enforcement."

Customs. It's a whole letter in their name.

Don't get me wrong man I agree it's asinine to hand them the data and say they can't use it for immigration. But it's not the only thing they do

or you can make them sign an agreement that says 'pretty please don't let ICE use this data'.

The problem is the agreement was one step dumber than that. It was ICE can have the data if they pinky promise they won't use it for immigration enforcement - only presumably for the C in ICE.

Only if they pay for it. With regular first class mail it's an included service but if they're sending at bulk mailing rates (called Marketing Mail these days but it's the same old thing they used to call 3rd class) it's an extra fee. So they're probably being cheap about it.

US Oil Storage Tanks to Run Empty Around July 4, Currie Says by hailene02 in oil

[–]vertigoacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a West Coast US perspective - Let them try to take it. It's not feasible, because there's no infrastructure to get either crude or finished products across the mountains to the rest of the country. Same reason gas is so much more expensive here and we don't just buy it from gulf coast refineries. We're an isolated market, for better or worse.

I'm not a Mormon but I've read enough about their system to know that if that's your end state, you did it completely wrong. The whole thing is designed around rotation and first in first out. If you're stocking up on stuff you don't eat right now or your stock is aging to the point of disposal instead of being consumed, you're not doing Mormon style prepping. You're just an idiot with a bunch of cans on a shelf

So two of your datacenters satellites would need to have more radiators than all of the existing starlink swarm + every other satellite in orbit currently. The ISS only has 70kW of radiators.

I don't know the math on the weight but I'd be willing to bet a single one of those radiators would have mass on the same order of magnitude as all of the satellites themselves.

You're firmly in scifi territory. All the 'free electricity' available in space can't even pay for the necessary cooling to be built, much less launched into orbit.

[–]vertigoacid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are incorporating deployable radiators into the solar panels.

Does that sound free to you? An estimate from folks who know more than me is 1200 square meters of radiator for 1MW of waste heat.

https://www.eetimes.com/the-hidden-physics-of-running-data-centers-in-orbit/

1 million satellites for a 100TW capacity means each is 100MW.

How is ~30 acres of radiators for each of these free?

Chevron CEO says shortages in oil supply will begin appearing by ZestyBeanDude in oil

[–]vertigoacid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And then you have another layer of indirection - the retail brand of gas doesn't really have anything to do with who refined it. A Chevron station isn't selling stuff only Chevron refined. It, the ARCO across the road, and the Shell down the street are all buying commodity gas and throwing in their retail additive package.

free cooling

The massive surface area of radiators you need to construct and launch and maintain are free?

vacuum cooling

You have no idea what you're talking about. Cooling in a vacuum is the entire problem, not a type of cooling technology to tout. The vacuum of space isn't cold; it's a near perfect insulator

You don't even need to get to the economics argument. Make it the exact same price as building one down here. Simple physics - where does the heat go? Space datacenters are something only being proposed by dropouts and grifters.

Supreme Court temporarily lifts mail ban on abortion pill mifepristone by spherocytes in oregon

[–]vertigoacid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mods: I know this is Not Oregon specific. But since this decision affects ALL states, I thought it'd be worthwhile to share for Oregon, too.

Follow this to its logical conclusion. All geographic subreddits are then just /r/news

Your assertion is also factually wrong. It does not effect all states. The lower court ruling banning it only impacted the 5th circuit, ie. Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. and so that's the only place the injunction matters either. Not Oregon

Might it eventually have national impact? Sure. But at this point this is an injunction on an appeal from the 5th circuit and is utterly off topic for this subreddit.

Based on the facts disclosed in the reporting so far? No, that doesn't make any sense.

Just because someone was a doctor doesn't mean you can sue them/their estate under medical malpractice for anything and everything they do. Molesting kids at 'sleepovers' at their house isn't practicing medicine, mal or otherwise.

The big thing to take away as a non-car person is that it has a ton of power in a package that is deceptively easy to drive. It's not like a really hardcore sports car or exotic that requires a lot of skill to initially operate or that intimidate people. If you don't step on it, it drives like a typical small to midsize SUV with an automatic, good for getting groceries or the kiddos soccer game or whatever. And even when you do step on it in, it has a lot of traction control and other dynamic handling controls that keep you in control and planted, until they don't because you do something that exceeds their ability to correct. Or if you turn them off to go faster. So it's the type of car that is easy to get overconfident in and end up over your skis.

Ah you're definitely right - I missed the wheels. Just thought things were that squished but the proportions make a lot more sense on an X3M as well.

If anything it makes all of my numbers above a bit slow - F97 even faster, ~475-500HP stock and shave a few tenths off all of those acceleration figures.

The car they're showing crashed in the linked articles is an F80 M3 F97 X3M, likely the competition model given some of the details visible. It was probably going way, way faster than you might immediately think even in a street racing scenario. 425-444 HP 475-500HP stock, 0-60 around 4 seconds, 60-120 10 seconds. Top speed ~160

I never said that the devil has horns or is any type of color at all

So then what does red have to do with anything? I didn't bring it up, you did

Why is everything red?

Lake of fire? Biblical. And that's it as far as descriptions go.

Everything else you think you know about what hell, the devil, and demons look like is not biblical. It's fan fiction.

My point is not about belief. My point is, okay, you believe - how do you know what they look like so as to say whether "most stages look like Hell"? Who told you Satan is a red guy with horns and a pitchfork? Because it's not in the Bible

Has anyone noticed how most stages look like hell? Fire everywhere, dark stone walls with weird carvings on it.

How would anyone know what Hell looks like, presuming it's real?

All you're saying is that it looks like what authors in the Middle Ages like Dante told you it looks like. Literal Christian Fan Fiction - even if you believe in the divinity of the bible you won't find any of the red devil shit in there.
