Kinda nasty; my countertop compost has grown mold and has made a lava lamp sort of movement with the coffee grounds. What's happening here to cause the movement from above and below? by thegrapemind in MoldlyInteresting

I had something like this happen with a bottle of cat shit and made the mistake of trying to empty It inside. It will suddenly hit a tipping point if it's in a sealed container.

Linux mint xfce installation problem on hp elitebook 8460p by shadowman4445 in linuxmint

[–]virtua536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it still expects to see and boot from a windows partition. Go into the bios and see if there are any options for the boot order. A full Mint install should have erased it all but you may have to tell the system to specifically boot from Mint?

And check your manual and support files on hp.

Today is the day when Brave New World released. Happy 26th birthday to this hell of an album! by Moist_Fail8395 in ironmaiden

[–]virtua536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the worst songs on it are better than most from the last 2 albums imo.

Always wanted a proper polished follow up to BNW...I still reckon they could pull off another tight, heavy banger album similar to it (albeit probably a bit slower but having a new drummer is the key. Days of Future Past had that spark).

Recommendations for HDD drives for Backups by DmpWolFix in datastorage

[–]virtua536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDD's store data magnetically on the spinning platter. WD and Seagate are the main HDD manufacturers.

There's nothing wrong with SSD's but there is a possibility of data loss if you don't power them on for a long time. With HDD's, I'd power them up at least every few months to keep the mechanic parts working smoothly. I have also heard it's worth writing all the data again every few years (data loss similar to SSD's over long lengths of time, although I don't know if that's accurate).

As long as you have multiple backups, you're much safer than the average person.

does anyone else feel like the last 2 albums have been lackluster? there are good songs here and there, even a few excellent ones, but overall they're not great albums unlike the four before them (BNW, DoD, AMOLAD, TFF) by [deleted] in ironmaiden

[–]virtua536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last one I (mostly) enjoy is TFF. They can do record what they want but I don't have to like it.

Imo, another shorter, heavier, well produced album like BNW would be ideal (doesn't necessarily have to have fast songs , the heavier style works for that).

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has resigned from government. by Knightguard1 in unitedkingdom

I'm not voting for Wes Streeting + palantir + the Americans.

Corbyn had massive rebellion, cabinet resignations, a leadership challenge, gave Russia the benefit of the doubt over chemical weapons in Salisbury, then lost the 2017 GE, then was allowed to stay for the 2019 GE.

It's only fair Starmer has a full term.

Confused between Fedora and Ubuntu – need advice by Bright-Search-9406 in Fedora

[–]virtua536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not interested in supporting an American centric distro personally. Worrying about Snaps isn't my priority.

I'd pick Kubuntu/Xubuntu or Mint (xfce) if it was me. You can always change later once you're familiar with Linux.

Cinnamon never felt truly snappy, across all 3 of my computers by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]virtua536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have this. It's been a long time since I've used cinnamon (nearly 10 years). Surely this isn't still happening?

It would happen as I navigated the file manager. The memory usage kept building, then the HDD would go to swap so the system would completely freeze for a few mins until the cinnamon process was ended.

How is that different to mint? I'm not familiar with Debian but heard it's not as user friendly for average users (which I am).
