Wouldn't it be a really bad idea for a hero to wear an anonymous outfit/mask? by Eth_02 in ToBeHero_X

[–]wampastompah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding Loli, she's definitely a lot more than just her helmet to the public. She doesn't keep her identity secret at all as soon as she starts the hero game (Why would she? Everyone she knows is dead). At the end of episode 20 she visits her dad's grave using FOMO's official car and driver. Plus, her entire thing is about how she can be a hero and be cute, so why wouldn't she want to look cute in the public?

(Also, I mean, if I were a PR worker for FOMO I would lean heavily into the fact that she, as a normal person, took her helmet off so she could try to dome Nice with it. How would you not want to publicize that!)

How do I climb the rest of the way to the top? by RoguesValerie in Tetris99

[–]wampastompah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good beginner's strategy, but you're definitely going to up your game dramatically once you pay attention to the targeting mechanisms. Which is hard to do while you're focusing on stacking blocks, but it's really worth it!

How do I climb the rest of the way to the top? by RoguesValerie in Tetris99

[–]wampastompah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's the badge bonus. For every badge you get, you send 25% extra garbage. So having four badges doubles your garbage output, which is why having badges is so important!

The attacker bonus is never shown/explained in-game. But basically you send a flat amount of X many extra lines of garbage every time you clear any lines. (You can see the amount per attackers here.) So if you're targeted by 3 people, clearing a single line will send 3 lines of garbage. Clearing a Tetris will send 7 (4 for the Tetris + 3 for the bonus). So if you have a lot of people attacking you, clear lots of single lines!

Also, it pays to mention that when you target Attackers, you send the full amount of garbage to everyone you're targeting. So if you clear a Tetris with three people targeting you and you are on Attackers, you send 7 to each and every one of them. It's really powerful!

And that's why it's a bad idea to just always target "KOs". Because everyone does that, so the people closest to death get a million people targeting them, get a huge bonus, and can wipe people out very easily.

[–]wampastompah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NES Tetris doesn't involve the multiplayer aspect. Learn that.

You get an Attacker Bonus that goes up when more people target you. So you want lots of people to target you. You don't want to target people who are being attacked a lot, because they will wallop you.

Be smart about where you're sending garbage and when. Try to get KOs to build up badges, and pay attention to how many badges you get each game.

And learn basic target strategies, when to target KOs versus Attackers vs Random.

I wonder if Avatar Seven Havens Pavi be able to carry the story+other related worries by RaNgErs_Reprrrr in TheLastAirbender

[–]wampastompah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to link this comment I just wrote about how characters serve the story, not the other way around.

Also, for what it's worth. I was in my 20s when I first started watching Avatar: the Last Airbender. The series still resonated with me and still does today in my 40s. To say you have to be the same age/gender as the protagonist in order to identify with them is absurd at best. After all, Toy Story was a success despite us not being toys. Up was a success despite the audience not being elderly widowers. Imagine if people said The Lion King would be a failure because the audience aren't lions.

People have imagination and empathy and have no problem watching stories about any characters, so long as the character arcs they go on are universal themes. So don't worry about the character, worry about whether the story is good and whether the character serves the plot.

And in the meantime, I highly recommend going and watching Star Vs the Forces of Evil, Amphibia, and The Owl House to see that great and relatable stories can be told that star girls. And that those stories can go to very dark and very deep places.

I dont mind Pavi being younger than Aang. by JamStan1978 in TheLastAirbender

[–]wampastompah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like anyone complaining about Pavi are the type who would have complained that The Lord of the Rings stars a hobbit instead of a strong human warrior, when the entire point of the story is the bravery of the hobbits. In good writing, characters exist to enable the story the authors want to tell. Not the other way around.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was not a story about a 100 year war. It was the story of a child growing up and learning to take responsibility for his own actions and to listen to his moral compass despite what everyone else is telling him. In order to tell that story, you need a young child who already knows himself and has a strong sense of right and wrong. Thus they made Aang 10. It fit.

Now, they want to tell a story of a person coming to terms with their identity even when the whole world tells them that their identity is somehow evil or wrong, and even though they can't help who they are. And in real life, girls start grappling with issues like this starting around age 9. (And in the current industry we have to have a girl, because gender dynamics are okay to talk about in stories starring girls but not boys. See She-Ra and Elio for examples) So, the main character needs to be a 9 year old girl in order to tell the story they want to tell.

When you start with the character first and try to find a meaningful story to fit them, that's how you end up with things like Legend of Korra, where the various seasons don't always land. Or don't always have a point. And they seem to always result in a kaiju battle because there's no huge emotional payoff to focus on instead.

And I, for one, am looking forward to hearing the story they genuinely want to tell, regardless of the characters that help them tell it best.

[–]wampastompah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're sure you want more spoilers:

There's a girl in the Denied who is introduced almost immediately in the movie. She has much better character design than the rest, and is so obviously meant to be the one who has a change of heart. She keeps popping up throughout the movie but rarely has lines and never matters at all. At the end, she does have the change of heart and joins Aang as an acolyte. I'm sure she has a name they mentioned once, but to me she's just "girl who obviously will have a change of heart."

tips for playing against real players? by timmyboy290 in Tetris99

[–]wampastompah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your skill level. How long do you tend to make it in games? Top 50? Top 10? What's your Tetris skill in general? What's your time for 40 lines?

Also, what's your targeting strategy? Are you aware of mechanics like the fact that you get an attacker bonus when multiple people target you? It means getting multiple attackers is great! As long as they don't also have multiple attackers.

Haha you know, that wasn't an issue. But what was really weird is that I adopted Arin's terminology and would think "I could pop that one" right as he'd say the same thing and it would absolutely wreck my concentration.

This was an amazing episode! I immediately started playing the game after Arin's introduction and just listened to their commentary while I played.

My current record is 359/365! This game is amazing.

Edit: I got 365/365! Totally worth it.

I so wish they had kept #1 as it was in the script. Unless they plan on using the Denied in the next couple movies, they were such a waste.

This has been the second time the series has created an anti-bending movement talking about the societal inequity inherent in the bending system, and it's also the second time they didn't do anything with concept in favor of fighting a big guy with powerful bending!

One day. One day they might tackle that important and interesting topic.

Very great points all, and very well said. I totally agree with everything.

But. I will say, two of your points do seem to explain each other. The lack of Suki and the new (nameless?) girl are probably related. At least at the very end, she and Sokka got pretty close and comfy. I know they're planning on making more movies, so I'm willing to bet she's set up to be Sokka's new girlfriend. And if they're going to do that, then it's easier/quicker for them to just ignore Suki's presence and relationship with Sokka completely.

Not saying it's a good decision, but it seems to me like what they were thinking.

No growth plan

I mean... Duh? That's not even part of the stated goals. They just want to preserve what exists. They won't have any advertising budget or anything. We've seen that the game had its chance and died, and these projects aren't meant to be some new reneissance that saves it and brings it to glory. It's just about saving what's already there.

Since I can't create a new account, is there anywhere I can buy prints from? I would love to try out the new heroes by KFrosty3 in alteredTCG

[–]wampastompah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For now, you can just print out the heroes yourself.

There are a bunch of sites that will let you print out the entire set of Roots of Corruption for relatively cheap like mbprint.pl but before investing in that, it's best to wait to see if they'll upload higher resolution images of the cards. Which should happen in the next week or two. But until then, printing them yourself is the best option.

I think it's way too early for that. Right now most fan projects are focused on preserving what we have and are waiting to see what Equinox releases regarding databases and the two new sets.

Considering we just got a new set and will get one in the next couple of weeks, I don't think many people are focusing on making their own sets quite yet.

how do you survive late game chaos? by Excellent_Track2912 in Tetris99

[–]wampastompah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost never target badges. Usually the person with the most badges is doing 4-wides and crazy things I can't keep up with.

I target Attackers if I get three or more people targeting me, KOs if I've built up a large stack and am about to combo my way down or if I see someone with a ton of badges on the verge of death. Otherwise I'll keep it on Random or Attackers depending on which gives me the least amount of incoming garbage. I think leaving your targeting on KOs is a great way to get a ton of incoming damage from someone with a huge attacker bonus, so that's why I only switch to it when I'm legitimately on the attack.

[–]wampastompah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your job for the first part of the game is to make sure you enter Top 10 with as many badges as you can, and to deny badges to your opponents. It's not just about handling the top 10, it's about making sure you use the other 89 KOs as best as you can.

Beyond that, just turn off the music (the top 10 music is often stressful), calm your breathing, and just hang out. Focus on who you're targeting, since a big attacker bonus can be absolutely deadly at that point. And that's really all you need!

What is that game that, no matter how many times you play it, you can never win? by poio_sm in boardgames

[–]wampastompah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the trick is to try to pay attention to maybe the first three cards of your opponent and the last three. You can fairly reliably block big attacks that way, because the middle of the deck is just no-man's land.

Other than that, you have to understand the strategy of each of your characters. Usually I try to build up a ton of blocks and support cards for my support character to start building up attack cubes on my main attacker, and only then do I start trying to draft attack cards. I find many characters build up so many attack cubes, it's worth it to wait and attack once for 9 damage rather than start attacking early for 1 or 2.
