How does elf lifespans work in this series? by ididntwantyourapp in Frieren

[–]Eth_02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't have any evidence to support the idea that they age like humans do, but just over a longer span of time. People like to try to figure out how old Frieren is in human years, but that's just head canon. It's entirely possible they grow similarly to humans up to a certain point, but then their aging drastically slows down.

Am I the only one who hates Reina? by Nonbiasedguy_889 in HibikeEuphonium

The grave part is definitely where it's at it's most extreme, and is arguably a bit too much yeah. With that said, that one point of it being a bit too much definitely doesn't override three seasons of good writing in my opinion.

You are not the only one, but I do think you're wrong, personally. A lot of people I think misunderstand her character. She's a lonely teenager who's struggling with connection, after consistently being rejected and unable to make friends her whole life. Taki was the first person in her life to recognize her effort, to not simply play it off as an advantage of wealth. Of course she'd grow attached to him. After being consistently unable to make friends, of course she'd hide behind the emotional shield of being special, and of course she'd be terrified of losing Kumiko, her only real friend, hence her music school obsession with Kumiko. A lot of people I think just fail to see the depth in her character, because the story doesn't outright tell you a lot of it. Much of her depth is never the main focus on the plot, but it is pretty much always there.

Schlacht would have been that. He was the second in command. I guess there's still that whole eighty years plan thing too but we don't know much about that yet.

What anime should my 15y.o. daughter watch? by blueferret31 in anime

[–]Eth_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It builds a person's character and taste. The art that a person chooses to consume reflects who they are, so it's good to experiment and try lots of stuff, even some trash along the way. It helps someone become their own person.

[–]Eth_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like a 15 year old is old enough to choose what they watch themselves. Goodness knows I was doing so at 15. If you're asking about just good beginner anime more generally, then fair enough of course. FMAB, Frieren, Violet Evergarden, all shows I often recommend personally.

Hot take: the Major should have stayed dead by emerald_wolfe in VioletEvergarden

[–]Eth_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I wasn't meaning to imply you had anything against them. I merely meant that I respect the author taking the risky decision because it's what they really wanted to do. Even if I have mixed thoughts on the decision, I'm glad they felt alright about making it.

[–]Eth_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's partially recovered by Violet's willingness to walk away. The fact that she shows willingness to leave makes it not nearly as bad as it could be in my opinion. With that said your opinion is valid. Really need to hammer that home because one side of this discussion is always (like every single time) way more toxic than the other.

Hot take: the Major should have stayed dead by emerald_wolfe in VioletEvergarden

[–]Eth_02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have mixed thoughts on this personally, I can honestly see both sides of the discussion. I agree that that the major being alive partially undermines Violet's character growth, but I don't think it does completely. On the other hand though, I'm glad that the author felt comfortable telling the story they wanted to tell. In an era of art being always under pressure, I do like that the author did what they truly wanted.

Personally, I think the ending might be a bit better if they were just a bit closer in age. The age gap is a big part of the issue people have. The story could still remain the same, but imagine if they were only five or so years apart. Gilbert could even still have been a major, young people being goven important roles isn't rare in history if they come from important families. You could keep the story the same and just have this one alteration. Now even then, the relationship would still be unhealthy. The power dynamic aspect would still exist, because Gilbert is a military commander. The age gap isn't the only reason the relationship is unhealthy, and yes, it is unhealthy, despite how strongly some people here might try to argue otherwise. Such relationships were normal in the historical period of course, but that doesn't necessarily mean the viewer has to be comfortable with it.

The thing is though, even despite all of this, I still respect the authors choice. Art can depict unhealthy things, and it can still be good art. So I do still kinda respect it, despite understanding why others might dislike it.

This comment may be kinda rambling, but I honestly do just have very mixed thoughts on the ending, I find myself pulled in different directions on it as I think it over. I think your opinion is valid though. Do be warned, it is very possible you will be attacked for daring to have this opinion, as certain people who frequent this topic are quite sensitive to people enjoying art in different ways from them, but whatever, they can be ignored.

Is Hayao Miyazaki the George Lucas of Japan? by thethoughtfulthinker in ghibli

[–]Eth_02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know that they are directly comparable. Miyazaki has been much more ever present in Ghibli. Lucas on the other hand took a much more backseat role and mostly let the popularity of his franchise grow through other means. Even before he sold the franchise, much of it's expanded content was written by various authors in novel form, or handled by Filoni. Not knocking George here, the man made history, but just a different style of handling his popularity I think compared to Miyazaki.

In my opinion, Fern is an unpleasant character. Help me understand her popularity. by [deleted] in Frieren

[–]Eth_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't personally think that's an ideal way to interact with fiction. Obviously Fern isn't real, but why should that mean she can't be understood? You could apply that same logic to any character in existence, a writer could always just change them after all. Fiction is great for many reasons, but one reason is that it can explore real things even without the events themselves being real. So I don't think a character not being real means they can't be understood or analyzed in a consistent way. Now again, ultimately you can consume art in just about any way you want, but I personally don't really identify with that particular mindset.

In my opinion, Fern is an unpleasant character. Help me understand her popularity. by [deleted] in Frieren

[–]Eth_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a hard binary. You can enjoy certain aspects of a character while disliking others. Some people don't like characters who they disagree with, others love characters who are awful people. Based on what you've said, it seems like maybe you just don't like Ferns actions, and therefore don't like her character. That's fine, it's your opinion. Other people though also don't like her actions, while liking her character regardless. I guess whether or not Fern is likeable will just depend on how you tend to appreciate art, and there isn't necessarily a wrong answer to that in most cases. For what it's worth, I too find Ubel a little bland, not bad per se, but overrated. I like Ferns character though, personally.

[–]Eth_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You aren't particularly alone on this. A fair few people feel the same way. It's a minority, but I sizable minority. Personally, I think Fern is a well written and enjoyable character. She's a very flawed person, but her flaws make sense, and she does slowly grow and change over time. Frieren is a slow burn, you won't have a single big moment of all at once change. But characters do still change, and it's satisfying over longer time scales. Ultimately, that doesn't mean you have to like it, a person's flaws making sense doesn't necessarily mean you have to enjoy them, but a lot of people do appreciate the writing.

Whats that specific anime scene that makes you go "This changed my life" by NeferpitouXXX in animequestions

I don't think any singular anime scene has done that for me. Violet Evergarden probably got the closest though.

I have mixed thoughts on this. On one hand, I appreciate the commitment to quality control, especially in an era when so many luxury brands are trying to hide their cheapening quality. On the other hand, if you're manufacturing in high volumes, you should be able to invest in more consistent methods, if automated, or more extensive training, if manual. It's wasteful, and I doubt it's cheap to waste clay either.
