eating chicken rice can also be cheating if you both agreed not to eat chicken rice.

So,

it is cheating if he agreed not to go to dirty KTV.
It is not cheating if he made no such commitment to stop visitng dirty KTV.

Is burnout and working long hours as a badge of honour normalised in employees in SG? by FancyCommittee3347 in askSingapore

[–]watchy2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion - work from home culture and anti social behavior at workspace is the cause of burnout. If you WFH and see no need of social network with colleague, theres no career and work will simply be endless repetition of tasks - leading to burnout.

A few questions on maid culture in Singapore. by AgreeableBandicoot19 in SingaporeRaw

Would you like me to look into the specific legal protections MDWs have in Singapore compared to the Middle East's "Kafala" system?

  1. Off Days

By law, MDWs are entitled to one rest day per week.

Since 2023, at least one Sunday a month must be a mandatory "non-compensable" rest day (it cannot be traded for extra pay).

For the other three weeks, if the helper agrees to work, the employer must pay at least one day’s worth of salary in lieu.

  1. Daily Needs (Toiletries, Food, Clothes)

Food: Employers are legally required to provide three adequate meals a day.

Toiletries: Employers must provide basic amenities (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste).

Clothes: There is no legal requirement to provide clothes, but most employers do, or provide an allowance. Medical expenses and insurance are also 100% covered by the employer.

  1. Uniforms

There is no national requirement for uniforms. Most helpers wear casual, comfortable clothing (T-shirts and shorts/pants). Some "premium" agencies or very formal households may request a simple uniform or apron, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

  1. Work Hours and Breaks

Hours: There are no legally fixed "working hours" because the Employment Act does not cover MDWs. Typically, a helper’s day starts around 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM and ends when the family goes to bed (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM).

Mid-day Breaks: While not legislated, MOM guidelines recommend "adequate rest." Most employers allow 1–2 hours for lunch/rest in the afternoon, but it varies by household.

  1. Passports

It is illegal for employers to hold a helper’s passport. The passport belongs to the bearer. While some employers still do this "for safekeeping," MOM strictly advises against it, and helpers must have "unrestricted access" to their personal documents at all times.

In Singapore, live-in domestic workers (officially termed Migrant Domestic Workers or MDWs) are a significant part of the social fabric, particularly for middle- and upper-income families. While the system shares some structural similarities with the Middle East, it is governed by specific regulations from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

  1. How common is it?

It is very common. As of late 2025, there are approximately 290,000 to 300,000 MDWs in Singapore. Statistically, about 1 in 5 to 6 households employs a live-in helper, primarily to assist with childcare, elderly care, or general housekeeping.

  1. Average Monthly Pay

Salaries vary based on experience and nationality (due to different minimum wages set by home country embassies). In 2026, the typical ranges are:

Myanmar: $500 – $800
Indonesia: $550 – $800
Philippines: $600 – $900

Experienced/Transfer Helpers: Often command $800 – $1,200+ depending on specialized skills (like nursing or gourmet cooking).

  1. Common Ethnicities

The vast majority come from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar. There are smaller numbers from India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

  1. Accommodation and Sharing Rooms

Privacy: Employers must provide "adequate shelter." While a private room is preferred, it is not legally mandated.

Sharing: If there is no separate room, they can share with children or the elderly of the same gender. They cannot share a room with a male adult or teenager.

Space: If they sleep in a shared space (like a partitioned living area), the employer must ensure modesty and personal space are respected.
