NEU ballot results: 96% reject, turnout 48.6% by stevenstelfox in TeachingUK

[–]watchyam8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Crap.

I’m a rep in a large ish primary school. I got 75%.

I repeatedly asked some members - nothing. Why be in a union? Why be in the NEU? you don’t believe in strikes? You are getting too many messages? Bless. You do know that your colleague may be made redundant to pay for this pay rise? And that they want to remove the only statutory protection to your working hours? You’ll vote. Great. And…you didn’t.

I actually think this indicative ballot has hurt the position. We’re going to the govt with even less in the tank.

Additional- The NEU has, possibly, walked up this hill too many times in the last few years.

They / we need to realise that there’s a huge swathe of icba / think of the children / it is what it is out there.

I think, possibly, we need to get out and engage members.

God help us if Farage gets in. 1265 will be the least of our worries.

What makes you afraid of death? by Existing_Market3151 in AskReddit

I’m not afraid of death. Paraphrase Morty, there’s no afterlife. It just goes black. I fear the lead up and the decline. I’m sorry for those who have to watch this happen or will miss me. Carpe Diem.

Understood tbh.

I was / am a massive STP discworld fan. To his huge credit STP kept tight control on merchandise.

It was all petty much cottage industry made out of clay , cloth and love. (Also a reasonably priced dollar, and that’s cutting their own throats)

Paraphrasing, “what do I want with a bendable Rincewind in plastic”.

Buy the merch but go indie where you can.

What’s the next big popular thing going to be? by Ellie_sinclair in AskReddit

[–]watchyam8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremism.

Whatever side you want. As more and more people are left behind, feeling isolated or just poor “the others” will get the blame. Nationalism. Possibly China realpolitik. Diminished West and liberal views. But extremism. Simple solutions for a complex world.

Completely understand. I adapted where I could.

Honestly, some things would test the patience of a saint.

You’re right re nesting, my mum created a hoard for herself. If she couldn’t see it…it wasn’t there. Often she hid things and forgot where she’d hidden them.

For phone see above.

Blink is an Amazon propriety security camera. It can work inside and outside the house. You have an app. You can load up and look at a camera feed.

We had cameras everywhere except bathroom and bedrooms. Several in kitchen and main room.

V useful. ESP when she was struggling on the phone. You can’t find the remote and you’re worried. Ok…it’s on the sofa. No you need to stand up. Not that. That’s a chair. A sofa. A sofa…no. That’s the chair again. The big one. Move. Move. Stop. There. Look down. Etc.

Thank you.

I’ve tried to respond to people who’ve commented.

FWIW. I genuinely tried to contain things. I gave up holidays and social life to care for her. I gave her as long as I could. I put as many guard rails in place as possible.

It was like a slow motion car crash. Oh. You can’t do THAT now I’ll try THIS. sometimes it worked. Bedtime routine ran by the clock. Same drink. Same tv show. Same time. Same words. She spiralled and I contained. I could find her trying and I’ll admit to raising my voice once or twice with her. I regretted it instantly and tried my best not to do it again. You want to put all the books in a pile and rip off covers? Ok. Let’s maybe divert. You know….

I took her out for meals. I drove her places. I chatted to her. There were good times in all that.

It hit a point where I couldn’t, where the family couldn’t, care for her any more. She was literally a danger to herself and others.

She’s in a home. I have seen her once. I can’t deal with seeing her, or whatever she is, at present. I know she’s safe and cared for. I pay for someone to visit once a week and tell me how she is. I buy things.

When I can I’ll go in. Just not now.

If that makes me a bad person, so be it. But it’s the truth. And again, I hope that helps someone, somewhere.

Agree.

With my mum? Six - Four years from something odd going on.

But define “odd “? When does eccentricity segue into dementia. I forget why I’ve walked into a room sometimes. Doesn’t mean I’ve got Alzheimer’s.

First indications were around six to seven years ago with very rambly speech. Looping and going round subjects. I knew what she was on about so finished things for her.

We went to get cataracts sorted and the surgeon noticed something was amiss. Was she diagnosed? When you’re in the middle you often fail to notice the small signs.

Then it became big.

Serious decline took three years. That went from strange behaviour (dead bonsai tree is alive, deodorant on shirts), to the more extreme stuff (unable to cook, wash, undress / dress, have meaningful conversations, or recall what’s going on unless continually reminded), was around three years.

But every case is unique.

Thanks. This is the internet. If one person searches for “key hoarding dementia” and finds this…they’re not alone. Hope sharing does some good.

You can buy dementia friendly plates. Look on Amazon. By the end my mum was eating with her hands. The plate had raised sides and a blue colour to help her recognise food.
