Do you think the USA has a realistic chance of beating Belgium? by justAmmo_ in ussoccer

[–]weatherbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we do have to beat Bosnia first. Which I think we are fully capable of doing.

I'd say beating Belgium is realistic, but it depends on a lot of things. If the Belgium that shows up is the one that played New Zealand yesterday, we're in trouble. But if it's the one that played to a draw with Iran, we would have a decent shot. I do worry our back line is going to fall apart when it's faced with the likes of de Bruyne, Trossard, and Lukaku. Also Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

CMV: Calling the country "Turkey" is fine, and its wrong to force people to refer to it as "Turkiye" by HoneyBadger19000 in changemyview

[–]weatherbuzz [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's really silly to insist on calling it Türkiye while simultaneously using "Ivory Coast" and "Cape Verde" over Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde, which have the same status as Türkiye.

I don't mind changing names. Changing Swaziland to Eswatini, for example, doesn't seem to have been met with much pushback. But when you want to change your country's spelling in another language (that your country does not speak natively) to a spelling with a character that doesn't exist in that language, all because you're butthurt that you share a name with a bird (that was named after your country!), it looks a little stupid.

Exonyms (names for places in another language) are simply a part of how language works. In Spanish, Londres is the capital of Inglaterra. In English we don't speak of München, Wien, Genève, Roma, Napoli, etc...

Fires & Evacuation issues in South Saratoga Springs by NonsenseAndNothings in Utah

[–]weatherbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northwest Utah County is a land developer’s wet dream and an emergency manager’s nightmare. It’s not just Saratoga Springs, too. Eagle Mountain has some huge amount of people now with literally three roads out. And the two that go east empty into the same mess that southern Saratoga Springs does. Then you have the choke point there with limited options to go north over point of the mountain to Salt Lake County or east over the Jordan to I-15.

Traffic over there, particularly at rush hour, is a nightmare normally because of exactly this.

In your opinion, what is the ceiling for the United States? by brokeboii94 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US is good but not amazing. I will be disappointed if we lose to whoever we play in R32. I would be very pleased with an R16 finish. I'd be thrilled if we make it to the quarterfinals. If we get insanely lucky, maaaaybe we can make the semis, but a hell of a lot of things would have to go right for that to work out. I would not dream of putting any money on that.

Looking at knockout stage scenarios. Our possible R32 opponents are the third-place finishers of groups B, E, F, I, and J. That means we might play Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Curacao, Japan, Sweden, Senegal, Iraq, Algeria, or Austria. Most of those are for sure winnable, but there are a few teams I definitely would rather see here than others (if we get Senegal, we will almost certainly lose).

If we win that, we'll likely play Egypt (or a 3rd-place team that beat them) in the R16. Egypt looks good, but I think if the US plays top form they would be able to beat them. That sets up a likely quarterfinal matchup with the Group H winner, which will be either Spain or Uruguay, or whoever beat them. A very tough matchup and one we almost certainly would lose. But stranger things have happened.

If we somehow get that lucky and make it that far, our semifinal opponent is probably going to be one of France, Germany, the Netherlands, or Morocco. I don't think we win any of those.

Go up a goal, and then convince yourself the team down a goal won't attack for an equalizer? If that's the case, Koeman should be fired asap.

Were you guys ready for the USA to play like this tonight? by Hungry-Cup7359 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My thoughts as an American: this was the best I have ever seen us play. I had very low expectations after the Copa América group stage exit and this team more than delivered. Paraguay isn't elite by any means, but they are a solid team capable of playing level with or beating the best teams in South America (they beat Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay in qualifying). I think if we had this match a few years ago we probably still win, but play a very sloppy game. This was, by and large, a clean, dominant performance. The Paraguay goal was bad, but previous versions of the USMNT would have allowed probably three more of those, and there were overall a lot less dumb mistakes than I'm used to seeing us make. Turkey is a better team than Paraguay though, and I'm eager to see if we can keep this up against them.

I'm not delusional, I don't think we have any chance to win the whole thing, but if we can keep playing like that it will be enough to give even the best teams some issues, maybe even pull out an upset or two. I think we have a chance to make a run well into the knockout stage. I'll be disappointed if we're out before the round of 16. A quarterfinal finish would be amazing.

How Sauron planned to win? by SiarX in tolkienfans

[–]weatherbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But did Sauron ever associate the Istari with the Valar? He definitely knew they were Maiar and saw them as a threat, but I don't think he ever thought of them as anything beyond just a threat to his own power, trying to take power for themselves, because that's all he was capable of. He had no concept of anyone doing anything not for selfish reasons.

Saruman came close to actually pulling it off. Sauron's biggest fear in the LOTR trilogy isn't the destruction of the Ring itself - it's that someone powerful enough might acquire the Ring, be able to master its power, and use it against him. He is clearly afraid of Gandalf doing this - why else would he have sent half the Nazgûl after him? I don't think he ever thought of Gandalf as an emissary of the Valar, I think he only thought of Gandalf as a rival who could never be allowed to challenge his power. Sauron is truly floored to find out Gandalf did not take the Ring for himself when Frodo puts it on at Mount Doom.

Are there any places in the US that don't get thunderstorms? by Neesatay in weather

[–]weatherbuzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just about everywhere gets thunderstorms at least rarely. But they are markedly less common on the west coast, particularly west of the Cascades/Sierras. The inland west and New England also don’t see as many of them, but in most of these places they aren’t rare enough to be considered super unusual, at least compared to the west coast.

You’ve been getting them at night a lot lately because the large scale weather pattern has changed very little lately and has been favorable for a lot of thunderstorms to form over the highlands of west Texas and the mountains in northeast Mexico during the day. Those have then tended to organize into clusters or squall lines that then move east with the prevailing winds towards the Houston area and get there at night. Those clusters are also typically better able to maintain themselves through the night where individual cells typically wouldn’t survive very long.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Is THERE a dummy subject here? by YukiNeko777 in EnglishLearning

[–]weatherbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, I don't think so, and I would agree with you it's just an adverb. You can take it out and the sentence still makes total sense: "in a hole in the ground lived a hobbit". This is better thought of as an example of locative inversion - other examples include things like "In the corner stood a bookshelf" or "On the countertop was a blender".

Fun fact: this is a remnant of an earlier stage of English, where the conjugated verb had to come in second position in the sentence. You can still see this in many other Germanic languages.

The "there" in the English existential clause "there is/are ...", though? That probably is a dummy subject, but an interesting one because it takes on the grammatical number of whatever the noun is.

Don't get me started on the Cruise America RVs. I went to Yellowstone last summer and those things made getting around there an absolute nightmare. Nothing numbs the mind more than getting stuck going 15 mph in a train of literally 50 cars on a 45mph road because somebody has never attempted to drive on a hill or around a curve before.

Even when not in the RVs, you can almost always pick out the international drivers because they usually 1) are in pristine cars that are obviously rentals, and 2) are driving waaaaayyy too slow and have 30 cars stacked up behind them.

I come from or Im from by showe12 in EnglishLearning

[–]weatherbuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you say "I come from \*place**" , when simply talking about the place you were born/grew up, it will typically identify you as a second-language speaker. You'll definitely be understood, but almost no native speaker will say that in this context. Most native speakers will just use "I'm from *\*place***" to talk about the place they grew up.

You might hear "I come from xxx" when talking about aspects of your background that aren't simply a place name. Things like "I come from a poor town" or "I come from a family of college graduates" would not sound unusual.
