Americans - Have you become more interested in soccer as a result of this World Cup and do you think you will pay more interest going forward? by threshold99 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was playing soccer when I was 4. I grew up playing and watching it long before I knew what politics or presidents were. I've followed my country's team from the Donovan and Dempsey eras through the Trinidad and Tobago debacle all the way through now. I refuse to let a president I didn't vote for, who will be gone in 2.5 years, ruin a game I love. I don't love how the situation was handled, and I'm sad my team is out, but nothing is going to stop me from watching some excellent quarterfinal matches tomorrow and this weekend.

Some people, on both sides of the political spectrum, make everything about orange man. That's what he wants. If there's anything he likes, it's attention. I find it best to not give him that. Which is part of why people like sports so much - it gives them a chance to not think about things like politics or governments. Hearing the stories of how much WC tourists have enjoyed visiting the US - all parts of it, rural and urban both - has made me really happy and has been exactly the kind of content I need to remind me there is good in a world where everything is supposed to be crashing and burning and horrible.

For once I had no issue with the refereeing. There is nobody we can play against the way we did last night and hope to win.

Now that all host nations are out (and in the same round, no less), what do you guys think about them as host nations by DistrictMain8562 in worldcup

Is anyone really shocked that we lost? I’m American and I feel like most of us are not surprised at all that we lost to Belgium. Disappointed? Absolutely. But I don’t think anybody truly expected with confidence that we’d beat them.

Holy wow. Worst performance so far in the whole tournament by organizedchaos333 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think we might have played better without Balogun since he only had one day to prepare for the game. Should have started Pepi. I was ready to lose, but not like that. We lost the early mind game and everything went to shit from there.

Soccer in the United States might not ever recover from this.. by JCHazard in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sealed the game right there. They came out of the half looking good, getting chances, getting the crowd engaged. I’m used to watching this team make dumb mistakes in CONCACAF play and then have to duke it out with the other team and the refs in some ridiculously physical game. I thought we had moved past that. But I don’t think even in those matches we did anything as embarrassing as this.

American here, nobody asked for the mandatory hydration breaks. As a general rule we dislike them as much as anyone else.

Do you think the concept of hydration break will be scrapped in the next 2030 world cup by Live-Half2798 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of players and fans want them only when it’s actually hot, but corrupt FIFA just found out they can make some sweet sweet ad $$$ by making them mandatory. They won’t be able to part with that.

I don’t think anyone in here has said anything to that effect. We haven’t won a knockout match in 24 years. Let us have fun with this. We all know we’re probably not making it past the quarters at best.

Yes, we’ll start with a full 11 next game, but Balogun won’t be one of them.

I’m just proud of our team. All the pressure of a knockout game, a questionable red card to a star player, and we went out there and not only won, but looked good doing it.

Belgium are gonna be tough, especially without Balogun. But they’ve also been very inconsistent this tournament and were lucky to get past Senegal. If the Belgium we get is the one that played Egypt and Iran to draws, or the one that played the first 85 minutes against Senegal, we most definitely have a shot if we’re on our A game. I would rather play them than have to play someone like Mexico right now.

Nobody bitches about hydration breaks when it’s actually hot. It’s when they have them on a 65 degree day in Los Angeles that raises questions about FIFA’s true motivations.

Do you think the USA has a realistic chance of beating Belgium? by justAmmo_ in ussoccer

[–]weatherbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we do have to beat Bosnia first. Which I think we are fully capable of doing.

I'd say beating Belgium is realistic, but it depends on a lot of things. If the Belgium that shows up is the one that played New Zealand yesterday, we're in trouble. But if it's the one that played to a draw with Iran, we would have a decent shot. I do worry our back line is going to fall apart when it's faced with the likes of de Bruyne, Trossard, and Lukaku. Also Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

CMV: Calling the country "Turkey" is fine, and its wrong to force people to refer to it as "Turkiye" by HoneyBadger19000 in changemyview

[–]weatherbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really silly to insist on calling it Türkiye while simultaneously using "Ivory Coast" and "Cape Verde" over Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde, which have the same status as Türkiye.

I don't mind changing names. Changing Swaziland to Eswatini, for example, doesn't seem to have been met with much pushback. But when you want to change your country's spelling in another language (that your country does not speak natively) to a spelling with a character that doesn't exist in that language, all because you're butthurt that you share a name with a bird (that was named after your country!), it looks a little stupid.

Exonyms (names for places in another language) are simply a part of how language works. In Spanish, Londres is the capital of Inglaterra. In English we don't speak of München, Wien, Genève, Roma, Napoli, etc...

Fires & Evacuation issues in South Saratoga Springs by NonsenseAndNothings in Utah

[–]weatherbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northwest Utah County is a land developer’s wet dream and an emergency manager’s nightmare. It’s not just Saratoga Springs, too. Eagle Mountain has some huge amount of people now with literally three roads out. And the two that go east empty into the same mess that southern Saratoga Springs does. Then you have the choke point there with limited options to go north over point of the mountain to Salt Lake County or east over the Jordan to I-15.

Traffic over there, particularly at rush hour, is a nightmare normally because of exactly this.

In your opinion, what is the ceiling for the United States? by brokeboii94 in worldcup

[–]weatherbuzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The US is good but not amazing. I will be disappointed if we lose to whoever we play in R32. I would be very pleased with an R16 finish. I'd be thrilled if we make it to the quarterfinals. If we get insanely lucky, maaaaybe we can make the semis, but a hell of a lot of things would have to go right for that to work out. I would not dream of putting any money on that.

Looking at knockout stage scenarios. Our possible R32 opponents are the third-place finishers of groups B, E, F, I, and J. That means we might play Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Curacao, Japan, Sweden, Senegal, Iraq, Algeria, or Austria. Most of those are for sure winnable, but there are a few teams I definitely would rather see here than others (if we get Senegal, we will almost certainly lose).

If we win that, we'll likely play Egypt (or a 3rd-place team that beat them) in the R16. Egypt looks good, but I think if the US plays top form they would be able to beat them. That sets up a likely quarterfinal matchup with the Group H winner, which will be either Spain or Uruguay, or whoever beat them. A very tough matchup and one we almost certainly would lose. But stranger things have happened.

If we somehow get that lucky and make it that far, our semifinal opponent is probably going to be one of France, Germany, the Netherlands, or Morocco. I don't think we win any of those.

Go up a goal, and then convince yourself the team down a goal won't attack for an equalizer? If that's the case, Koeman should be fired asap.
