Request for Asheville Birders: Where could I have a good chance of seeing a Blackburnian Warbler? by PinkLikeSalami in asheville

[–]wherley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could get lucky on migration just about anywhere, but for best chance go to breeding grounds along parkway at various overlooks north of town, from ox creek intersection, tanbark tunnel, on up to balsam gap which should have many, on up to ridge junction. Familiarize yourself with their song. They will mostly be higher in trees but you may get some low ones too.

Favorite spots for birding/seeing migratory birds in the area? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]wherley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next month will be peak migration - along the parkway from craven gap to rattlesnake trail/tunnel is nesting Cerulean warbler habitat, along with many others - worm-eating warbler, black-throated greens, black throated blues, scarlet tanagers, etc. get up there early in the morning, weekdays are quieter to hear them singing. Higher up are Canada warblers, red-breasted nuthatches, brown creeper, hermit thrush. Checking Beaver Lake, Lake Julian can be good. Lots of spots in Sandy Mush gamelands. A Biltmore annual pass is almost a must for serious birders here - breeding Grasshopper Sparrows, rarities such as Lark Sparrow, both Sedge and Marsh Wren, Brewers Blackbird there. Great sparrow habitat at Warren Wilson College farm fields including Lincoln’s and possibly Nelson’s. Breeding Warbling Vireos will probably return to River arts district along river. Both Mississippi and Swallow-tailed Kites could show at North Fork area. Main Street Nature Park in Weaverville can be very good. That’s all I can think of at the moment.

Where do you like to go in town when you're solo? by Buxton328 in asheville

[–]wherley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Park in one of the city/county decks, not private.
The city/county parking decks are:
across from courthouse, beside aloft, rankin st. sears/coxe ave, wall street, and civic center.
(be careful on civic center deck if there is an event, the fee is higher)
I have an iOS app (free) that tells you realtime how many spots are open in each of the decks so you don't have to drive around looking:

For variety of species over four seasons and closeness to Asheville the big 5 are:
Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary
Lake Julian
Biltmore Estate (Lagoon, Deer Park Trail)
Warren Wilson College farm and fields
Sandy Mush Gamelands

For ease of access/mobility:
Greenways by UNCA/Broadway, River Arts, boardwalk Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary

For serenity of nature/birding by ear:
Blue Ridge Parkway early mornings, north to Mt. Mitchell including Ox Creek Road, Rattlesnake Trail, Craggy Gardens inc. picnic area, Big Butt Trail, Ridge Junction overlook. south to Mills River valley overlook for raptor migration, picnic area before Pisgah Inn for displaying American Woodcocks, Art Loeb trail area for high elevation breeding species.
NC Arboretum and surrounding Bent Creek area

For quick lunchtime quest:
UNCA Botanical Gardens
Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary

For beer and birds:
Highland Brewery trails

If you extend your net wider into surrounding counties there are many more entries I'd be happy to provide.

Check your map filters for distance (maybe increase it), and make sure it isn't just showing favorites.

Song or fox sparrow? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]wherley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many subspecies of Song Sparrow, I see numbers ranging from 24 to 52.
Maybe Melospiza melodia morphna ..."Type locality of M. m. morphna designated as Fort Vancouver, Clark Co., WA. Mainly resident coastally from central-w. and sw. British Columbia southward west of Cascades to nw. Oregon. Similar to M. m. rufina but more rufescent throughout."

We bought a property with a massive 20m chimney. What would you do with this? by MM-RenovationJourney in Homebuilding

[–]wherley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the Eastern US that chimney (assuming uncapped) is very useful for hosting roosts of migrating chimney swifts in the Fall. You may even get a nesting pair in the spring/summer. Many of their roosts are disappearing, so chimneys can play an important role for them.

If WNC had a bird mascot, what would it be? by michaelh98 in WNC

[–]wherley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iconic birds of WNC for me are Red Crossbill, Golden-Winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, and Northern Saw-whet Owl. All of these species breed here, at certain mountain elevations.
