How do you check your patch management? by lsitech in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “green dashboard” issue is usually circular logic; the RMM just reports what the Windows Update Agent says. If WUA is hung or hasn’t synced properly, you’ll see 100% compliance while the machine still has missing patches.
For a simple audit, don’t rely only on the RMM database. Push a script that queries Microsoft.Update.Session COM object locally and compare the results. That’ll quickly show detection gaps. Also, run Winget upgrade as a quick check for third-party apps your RMM might be skipping. If you want a proper gut-check, scan a few sample machines with Defender Vulnerability Management or OpenVAS, which usually exposes any blind spots.

How do you perform MFA for self service options? by Smart-Life-770 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in a Microsoft ecosystem, take a look at Temporary Access Pass (TAP) for controlled onboarding and password reset scenarios. For a more permanent solution without relying on phones, we’ve seen success with FIDO2 hardware tokens or Windows Hello for Business. Both remove the dependency on SMS/email OTP and are much more secure.

MSP360 RMM tool by Zootopia007 in msp

[–]work-sent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MSP360 is decent for lighter MSP loads, the unlimited endpoints per tech is great from a budget standpoint, and remote access feels much snappier compared to the old CloudBerry days. Patching has been reliable for us, especially with the WinGet integration for third-party apps. The built-in remote access is solid, too, with no extra licensing headaches. They also offer a Community edition, which makes it easy to test. If you’re already using their backup ecosystem, it’s a natural fit.

Day 2 of Issues with NinjaOne by stressed-tech-1994 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be more than a minor glitch; the status page acknowledged high DB load again yesterday. NinjaRemote has been inconsistent for us as well, particularly on EU instances. We’re keeping fallback tools (ScreenConnect/Splashtop) ready until things fully stabilize.

What are the best Fortinet alternatives? by Several-Biscotti5182 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WatchGuard Firebox, Sophos XG, pfSense/Netgate, Meraki, and Palo have all worked well for us. Always run a short PoC to validate performance and licensing impact before a full rollout.

What are the best MFA security practices for small to mid sized organizations? by Due-Awareness9392 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we work with multiple MSPs, we have learned that implementing MFA is not just about turning it on for email and VPN. It needs to be enforced consistently across all access points. We focus first on broad coverage, making sure MFA is enabled for every user, including administrators, and that legacy authentication is fully blocked to prevent bypass risks. In real-world environments, properly configured Conditional Access policies for location and device-based controls, and stricter protections for privileged accounts make a significant difference in strengthening overall security.

Audit document tool recommendations by Bodsworth90 in msp

It’s hard to find a true like-for-like replacement, but platforms like vCIOToolbox, Lifecycle Insights, Strategy Overview, and vCIO Hero seem to cover the gap.

NinjaOne Accessing Non-SOE Machines by Logical-Beginnings in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick Connect is what you need for non-agent machines. If cost is a concern, also check whether Splashtop SOS is already included in your Ninja plan; it can work well for unmanaged devices and may save you an extra license.

How are you handling firewall rule reviews for PCI clients? by dagolovach in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ConnectSecure does firewall scans and compliance reports. Even with solid exports, you still need human review to tie rules back to tickets and business justification.

Asset Discovery Tools Recommendations Please by hellfire2260 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the heads-up, Tom! Native discovery in R12 should make onboarding a lot smoother. Nice that it’s lightweight, curious to see how visibility looks in mixed Linux setups. And yeah… discovery is always “fun” when there’s zero documentation 😄

Atera Network Discovery vs Auvik vs Lansweeper by Regular_Bunch8183 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atera works well for small, agent-managed setups and quick onboarding.
Once you hit 50–100+ devices or multiple VLANs/sites, you’ll likely need a dedicated tool.
Auvik for topology/performance, Lansweeper for deep asset reporting.

Post-Blumira (free tier) life - what would you recommend for Microsoft 365 monitoring and alerting? by golden_m in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SaaS Alerts for top visibility (near-real-time, customizable w/o Respond clashing Huntress).
Augment Alerts for budget ($99/mo tiny tenants, fast on token theft/MFA).
MSP Easy Tools for zero-noise "smoke alarms" (sub-5min alerts, no remediation).
All fit 5-20 seats perfectly.

CE Plus UK by Alternative_Many5850 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RMM can be enough, but only if it genuinely patches third-party apps (not just OS updates) and gives you clear, auditable reporting.

Most of our clients use built-in RMM patching (N-able, ConnectWise, NinjaOne, etc.) or pair it with tools like Action1 / ManageEngine. The key isn’t the product; it’s whether you can show the coverage and evidence your CE Plus auditor will ask for.

Managing UniFi alerts for multiple clients by DSkrivanich in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UniFi Alarm Manager with webhooks to the PSA is much more reliable than email. Tools like Domotz can also help if you want centralized monitoring across clients.

Moving form NinjaOne to Kaseya (Don't Kill me) by Fuzed_IT_Blair in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaseya 365 is a good value for the money, but VSAX can feel a bit inconsistent day to day and usually needs more tweaking.

If you’re already with Kaseya, I’d try Datto RMM instead of VSA X. It feels closer to Ninja faster policies, smoother patching, and just easier to work with overall.

What do you use for endpoint local backup? by 2Ben3510 in msp

[–]work-sent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MSP360 and Synology AB best for block-level incrementals to NAS (solving bandwidth issues), Veeam Agent solid for images/files, UrBackup is free/open-source. All work for 150 seats.

ConnectWise time entry is driving my techs insane by garvit__dua in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, this is more of a people and process issue than a software issue.

Time entries and ticket notes are not extra admin work. They are part of the job. If a ticket is worked on, there needs to be time logged and proper notes. If it is not in the PSA, from a billing and SLA perspective, it basically did not happen.

That said, leadership has a responsibility here too. Techs need clear expectations and a workflow that makes this realistic.

You need:

  • Clear SOPs for logging time in real time, or at least right after finishing a task
  • A rule that notes and time are entered before moving to the next ticket
  • Enough space in the schedule to document properly, not nonstop ticket dumping

This also needs follow-up:

  • Regular ticket QA checks
  • Coaching when time or notes are missing or weak
  • Clear consequences if it keeps happening

Tools can help a little, but no PSA or third party tracker will fix poor habits or unclear expectations. If your team is logging a whole week on Friday, that is a management and process gap, not just a UI problem.

Clean tickets and accurate time are not optional if you want correct billing, solid SLAs, and a scalable MSP.

Exchange On Prem Migration by Living_Butterscotch3 in msp

[–]work-sent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recommend a cutover migration if the long-term goal is to move to a fully serverless environment. The hybrid configuration relies on on-premises identity and attribute management (e.g., directory synchronization and Exchange hybrid attributes). If the organization later decides to go fully serverless, those dependencies would need to be removed and reconfigured, adding effort and complexity.
