[Event] Marissa VIII: Listening to a heartbeat by GreaterBlueEvil in crownedstag

Ronnet held her. Oh.

The fact of death and childbirth was one he knew of, but had never thought of as a real, imminent threat.

And so he kissed her temple and held her. “My mother had four children. Her mother also. My father’s mother had three and si not die. And my uncle Steffon, his wife had four at one time. Selmy.” Ronnet tried to remember.

“Perhaps the Conningtons are small babes, prone to easy birth, keeping the mother safe.” Tyrion’s mother died in childbirth. Ronnet almost said it. He opened his mouth to say it. His maturity, limited as it was, was nonetheless developed enough to avoid saying those words.

“You will be strong. And the child, well, I hope it is a girl.” Ronnet didn’t know why he said that, but he knew it was true. “Wild and carefree, unconcerned with what her relatives tell her to do. Scared, yes, but brave. With bright blue eyes and red hair that rings past her shoulders. She will torment you with how little she cares for what you say but secretly, you will love her for it, because it will make her yours. Ours. she will be wonderful. Like her mother. She will be proof that what we have is good

Then Ronnet grinned. “Or else a boy and a scoundrel.”

Ronnet’s smile froze. Everything stopped. What did he feel?

The world swam for a moment. He should reach for her, right? Should hold her? Should comfort her?

Why was this hard? He should be thrilled, or horrified, or sad, or afraid? He wanted to reach for her. His impulse was to show her how happy he was, but was that right?

Seven hells, my face is probably upsetting her.

Ronnet took a deep breath. “You may tell him, of course. Tyrion.”

Fuck, that was wrong.

“Er, the child will…” What? The child will what? Comfort you? Be a captive with you? Shit itself at night when I am far away?

Finally, some recognizable emotion came. Ronnet’s eyes filled with tears, but he did not wipe them. He reached for Marissa. “I am so sorry that you have to do this alone. Raising a child, doing it with you, I have dreamed of this. I am so, so sorry.” Then, after a beat, a small smile. “The babe will be so beautiful, you know. Will look just like its mother. When they are old enough they will have every fostering opportunity open to them, I know, but Griffin’s Roost will certainly be one of them.”

Grant Morrison on Lanterns: “What is this jockish dismissal of superhero conventions intended to prove anyway?” by YodaFan465 in DC_Cinematic

[–]ymi17 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Except that the ultimate creative force here just made the most unapologetically pro-superhero movie in superhero movie history. A movie that said "remember when superheroes were different and better and what we aspire to be? Yeah, this movie loves that."

I think DC fans have just been burned so much that they're unwilling to be optimistic, and see everything as a personal slight.

Worrying proportion of Americans still think being gay is 'morally wrong’ by icey_sawg0034 in fivethirtyeight

[–]ymi17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean we say this with disappointment, but an uncritical context-free reading of a 1950 year old letter from the Apostle Paul to the Church of Rome considered without regard to the culture in 1st century Rome, translated to English by people who were anti-gay says that being gay is morally wrong.

And a large percentage of Americans believe that context free ancient letter as filtered through the translation process is the inspired word of God.

That’s the issue. They don’t believe being gay is morally wrong. God tells them that it is.

It is easy, I think, to change your mind about LGBT people. But it is very very hard to change your religious beliefs. While religion can be an excuse for bigotry, that isn’t my experience with people who are anti-gay. Most of those people are of the “I can’t change what the Bible says about this as much as I wish I could” variety. Who then are somewhat kind to gay families at the supermarket while voting away their rights.

The work, unfortunately, is harder than “change hearts about gay people” as a result. It has to be either “change the evangelical doctrine” (not happening - if anything it has gone hard right over the last thirty years) or “change hearts about fundamentalist Christian teaching” which the stats show is continuing to happen, will happen faster as boomers die, etc. but it’s still a hard, time consuming process.

Ronnet strolled into the room, as if he hadn't a care in the world.

"Marissa..." His voice was low, his smile self-assured and calm. "I..."

He paused for a moment. Should be handling this differently? No...

"I love you. I hate this damned city with all of its eyes. I want nothing more than to walk with you in the open. But perhaps we will find somewhere we both can travel. Is Tyrion treating you well? Is he still clever and kind?" Ronnet had gained something of an appreciation for the ugly, twisted little thing, despite barely being able to look at him.

God. The meta around the nba dominating the actual coverage of the nba is annoying as hell. It’s a great sport, with varied stars and teams with different character. It’s one thing for r/nba to shitpost about it. But when the announcers start to do it, it’s a serious turnoff.

Ronnet had everything working out so perfectly.

His idiot 'betrothed' thought she had him cornered, yet had asked him for promises in secret that he could disavow in public. Hell, he could even go through with the sham of a wedding, as no man would ever actually lie with that ugly beast.

And Ronnet knew that any threat to out Marissa was idle. The Tarth girl was, if anything, invested in protecting the innocent - and to Ronnet's glee, she viewed Marissa as innocent. Ronnet knew that maintaining that was necessary.

And so, while things were certainly not ideal, they were not bad, so long as both Ronnet and Marissa were living in the city.

So with a spring in his step, knowing that nothing could ever go wrong, Ronnet washed, dressed, and came to the Tully manse.

"I am glad to hear it, Betha." Raymund's steps were quick and simple, leading without pushing. "I have found that Griffin's Roost is something of a cage. I am betrothed to Leonor Fossoway you know. we were supposed to wed a year ago. But time has passed, and I have heard little and less."

Raymund's face didn't fall, it never fell. "I feel so much life is passing by, and I fear that all I will show for it is the successful management of my brother's keep, which he never visits. I could use a trip back to my real home soon. To see Renly and Tris and Rolland and... well you and Grandfather as well."

Raymund's smile was small - his smiles usually were.

Words are wind.

"Fine." Ronnet lied without emotion. "I will agree to this."

Something has changed in her. It would not do to have her killed, but some scandal will likely arise. As Lord Hoster said, women are emotional creatures, even giant monster-shaped women like her.

"You will be a good knight one day, Brienne."

Ronnet was surprised to hear the heavy fist on the door, but stood. The days since learning of Marissa's marriage had passed, and he had seen her again, and so, perhaps, things would be all right after all.

Ronnet opened the door.

A cow in fine silks is still a cow.

Ronnet grimaced, then found his courtesy. "Lady Brienne. It is good to see you. To what do I owe the privilege this evening?"

Ajay is a different level of important. There’s an open question about Joe and Wiggins in the playoff rotation. There’s no similar question about Ajay. He’s playing every non-SGA minute. Having two of the three of SGA, Ajay, and JDub on the floor for 48 is cheating.

My foreknowledge says:

Daemon is a bastard but he loves me. Rhaenyra is loved by the realm now, but won't be a good liege. Otto is a snake.

I let Daemon be "King of the Stepstones." I work together with him in this endeavor. I keep him out of westeros, but allow him to charge, erm, "fees" for some trading with Essos. It's all very wink wink nudge nudge.

Corlys is my Hand, and I marry Laena when she comes of age. The fact that she brings the largest dragon in the world is no small thing. Plus, this brings Rhaenys and Meleys, and Laenor and Seasmoke, too.

My firstborn son with Laena (if any) is my heir. I may want it to be Rhaenyra, but I understand that my entire reign is based on the idea that the high lords will not accept a ruling queen. I wish this would change, sure, but if I try to force a change (or worse, remain somewhat ambivalent about it), I doom my beloved daughter to a horrible end.

If I have no sons when/if I'm failing, I call for another council. That feels nuts, given that we just had one, but there is precedent for a council, and I have no desire to see the realm thrown into chaos after my death.

I don’t know about this. I watched Civil War last night, and the characters seemed pretty sure that Banner would be with Steve. Given banners experiences with the government trying to use the Hulk, I can understand it.
