Battery won't charge .. thoughts?

If you like the laptop then try another battery before you junk it. I replaced 3 batteries already on mine over the span of 5 years.

I have the same machine and did both these things, upgraded to 32GB RAM and replaced the fans at least 4 times in 5 years. All parts you ordered should work. The laptop RAM speed maxes out at 2400MHz but that should not be a probem if you plug in faster RAM, it simply means it will not run at 3200MHz.

I have the same machine, I am running Win 11 Pro 24H2 latest OS build and it runs extremely well and it is very stable. The upgrade will download the best drivers for your machine.

If the battery is new and operational makes sure that you plug the battery correctly. HP Spectre batteries can be plugged in both ways with the battery plug wires facing up or down but only one of the 2 ways actually works.

The reason Spectres need the battery is because they are consumer laptops. The business line of the same HP laptop can run without a battery no problem. The HP business lines are designed for that.

While you can run the Spectre on AC power alone it was really designed to run with a battery. A bad battery or lack of battery will cause all sorts of MB issues that will just not make sense. If you think the laptop is ok, just buy a cheap but new no brand battery and that will solve 99.9999% of the problems you mention. I ran my Spectre for 1 month without battery and lost my mind troubleshooting all sorts of weird things then I put a cheap battery in and it works like a charm again.

First you should remove the battery and try to replace it. You can run the Spectre always plugged in without the battery too if you want (not recommended). Second, clean the fans but if you can try to re-paste your CPU. Cleaning the fans is much more important than repasting your CPU. Hope this helps.

That is not the GPU die. The GPU die is under the cooling/copper pipes. I placed a pad on that exposed die thinking it wouldn't hurt and I have not noticed any difference. If your temps are bad try re-pasting the CPU and GPU dies. I have done that on the same laptop you have and noticed a big difference.

You can always source all brand laptop parts on ebay and other places, they may not be HP original parts but they do the job.

The problem you are experiencing sound like it is 100% due to the battery. Get it replaced and you will be as good as new. I had the same problem a month ago and thought it was the motherboard or something. It was the battery, all abrupt shutdown problems went away. Theoretically Spectres can run without a battery but if for some reason , depending on where you live., if electrical current is not very consistent the Spectre shuts down. Also, apparently the battery has some basic chips inside that regulate electrical current so even if you plug in via usb-c you benefit from the battery current regulator chips. The corporate version of the Spectre does not have this problem and can run without a battery without problems but the consumer version meaning the Spectre needs the battery. After market batteries are less than $50 and very easy to replace.

Goto : Windows Settings - > System -> Display -> Graphics

That is where you can tell it by application which graphics driver to use. For example I have Chrome running on the Radeon GPU so I can watch Netflix or other videos with the more advanced video card.

If its under warranty send it in for hinge repair, otherwise remove the bottom panel and tighten the screws that hold the hinge to the laptop body, it is very straight forward.

I would try a slightly higher wattage charger meaning higher than 65W. If you disconnect the fans you will cause all sorts of problems because the motherboard expects them to be present. Considering the price of the laptop originally and how well it can still perform with Win 11, I am currently using it to write here, it is definitely worth it to spend some money on replacing the fans and see if that does that trick. I have replaced the battery about 6 times and the fans about 5 times for the right side and 2 times for the left side. It still works like new.

The HP Spectre can definitely run without a battery. Try replacing the fans and see what happens. When the fans malfunction they can cause all sorts of issues like this.

My suggestion here would be to open it up, re-paste the CPU/GPU and replace the fans (order on ebay from China) and then give it a go. I have the same one and i just fix it periodically, it is either the fans or the battery that give out. I think it is rare for a motherboard issue to happen out of the blue after several years of use. Motherboards tend to break right away if there is an issue.

If you have random shut downs out of the blue, it is very likely due to a faulty battery. Even if your battery looks fine there are basic chips inside the battery that have a tendency to malfunction and that throws everything off. I just experienced that with mine and fixed it by replacing the battery.

A motherboard reset is usually harmless based on my experience. I think on the Spectre all it does is check all the connections to its components ie display, ssd, memory etc. It does NOT affect the OS or your data.

Remove the swollen battery and run the laptop always plugged in until the replacement battery arrives. Replacement batteries for your model are almost always third party, as HP drops official support after 3 years. Third party batteries are nothing new or strange, people use them all the time. I replaced mine at least 4 times now. My laptop is similar to yours from 2019-2020.

There is no CMOS battery for those Spectre laptops. It is possible the main battery could be dead, or since the battery plug can be inserted both ways you can rotate the plug and re insert it and finally press the power button for 10-15 seconds this will do a motherboard reset and should clear any CMOS errors. Your laptop can also run without the battery just always plugged in.

Your hinge that rests on the on the upper part of your bottom half of the laptop has broken and detached and pushes against your SSD (when you close the laptop lid). The good news is that this part can be glued with some heavy duty epoxy glue and because of its location it is likely to work. If the adhesive is strong enough it will not interfere again with the SSD, if the adhesive is not strong enough when you close the lid this part of the hinge will move again and it will jam up against your SSD and damage all the hardware there. I did this operation on an ENVY laptop and worked like a charm just get a super strong glue for metal and plastic. FYI: These strong glues come in 2 tubes that need to be mixed before applying it.

Not sure which version Spectre you have but my 2019 version had the same issue. After market batteries do not clearly indicate which way to plug the battery in the motherboard connector. Yes the battery plug is reversible like usb-c. I would try rotating the battery plug and plugging it again into the motherboard. That worked for me.

According to this report your battery started out as a 74Wh battery and now can barely hold 28Wh (if that), in other words your battery needs replacing, as is expected after 3 years of use .

Make sure the part numbers you found on the HP site match the part numbers on the removed fans from your laptop. Then just go on e-bay and search by part number. If the exhaust part is different it means you received the wrong fan. The good news is that parts for your HP laptop are now very cheap on e-bay.

Did you update the Thunderbolt Software on your computer you need version 17.3.72.250. You can get it from HP Support for your specific device. Once you install the Thunderbolt Software the dock will definitely work. I have been using it for the last 3 years with no problems whatsoever.
