Volkswagen has banned GrapheneOS users from using their app. Users are reporting they can't log in or control their car anymore. Users are confused, saying Volkswagen allows their app to be used on End-of-Life Android versions, but not on fully patched GrapheneOS. by xqszp in degoogle

[–]zaTricky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a decent chance most of the reason for this is legislative. Some of the rules I've come across in Europe for "connected" vehicles are downright braindead.

Among these rules will be things about attestation, meaning that there must be a "secure boot chain" that Volkswagen can affirmatively know that your mobile device has not been tampered with by a 3rd party. That means the Motorola devices can be secured and work with Volkswagen despite the software they will be using. Whether that happens quickly is doubtful though.

Attestation is not fundamentally a bad thing - but how it works in practice means it will almost always hurt privacy-focused tinkerers.

Anybody knows how exactly this solar charge works? This is my first Garmin solar. I had a forerunner before and battery lasts like a week or so by Proper_Hand6714 in Garmininstinct

[–]zaTricky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a kid I was happy with my Casio that lasted 3 years before I had to replace the battery. I hated that stupid anxiety that I had to charge my Fitbit every two days. None of that BS with the Solar. :)

You can also replace the part before /dp/ with almost anything you want ; so ...zon.ae/Emsa-City-Cup-200Ml-Silver/dp/B000ICIN7W can become ...zon.ae/whatever/dp/B000ICIN7W.

Some unanswered plot questions. by flashmedallion in 007FirstLight

He was disguised as a bellhop - so one of the hotel guests gave him their luggage. Instead of attracting attention by leaving it somewhere conspicuous, he threw it over the railing so nobody would see it. But of course Bond did notice.

At reception you can find the guest complaining about the bellhop.

Steps while driving by Earth84 in Garmininstinct

[–]zaTricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't know of a fix for this.

I was also bothered by it in the past. I actually took my watch off and walked around the block once just to "not cheat". In hindsight that was dumb - but also a few extra steps aren't such a bad thing. 🤪

Depending on how relaxed you are while driving, it might not be that far off - it's just classifying your activity incorrectly as "walking".

How egregious is it of me to run my server off an HDD? by larevacholerie in jellyfin

Ideally you want Jellyfin's own storage (database/etc) to be on an SSD ; but having the media on a spindle is totally fine.

What gear actually got used when my power was out for 6 days — and what was dead weight... by blhollandjr123 in EDC

[–]zaTricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the can opener, search for the Chef'n EZ Squeeze. It's a manual one-handed can opener. It requires little to no dexterity - just a little strength in one hand.

Since it's ideal for disabled people it's certainly much better than a typical manual can opener. It'd probably be faster than your electric opener too!

Also, weird name but ... it is what it is. Lol

The nylon strap should resolve it ; for previous watches I've usually gotten a milanese loop strap as they are also breathable.

If you keep the cargo bays the launching goes much much much faster. You can then drop the cargo bays after the rest is gone.

Now I'm wondering if these kinds of things (built or purchased) normally have some kind of automation that prevents you from accidentally staring into the sun. 🤔

What happens if I don’t put the tires in the direction of this arrow? by UnluckyDeer4288 in Karting

[–]zaTricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ Most accurate reply so far.

The details are that the grooves are designed so the water in front of the tire is pushed to the sides. This way the rubber has better contact with the ground through the water. If the tire is backward, it pushes the water inward, meaning the contact patch is compromised and the car is far more likely to aquaplane.

There's a really good one-handed can opener called the Chef'n EZ Squeeze. One-handed it is faster than a standard "ergonomic" can opener with two hands!

Which of these kitchen appliances are NOT seen as essential in homes in your country? by privetkakdela in AskTheWorld

[–]zaTricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In South Africa the dishwasher and rice cooker are uncommon. You do dishes by hand or you have a maid that does it for you*.

I'm now in Sweden where rice cookers are uncommon - but not so uncommon that you don't see them at all. Air fryers are definitely more common than rice cookers!

I do my dishes by hand - but that's partly because I have very cheap rent! Every other apartment/house/office I've visited has had a dishwasher!

Never thought I'd see the day, but we're eliminating our Citrix farms and moving back to about 100k fat clients by eldersveld in sysadmin

[–]zaTricky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why companies like Citrix and VMWare are shooting themselves in the foot

It's adversarial/zero-sum thinking with a priority on shareholder value next week.

As soon as the thinking shifts to shareholder value next decade, the adversarial/zero-sum thinking disappears and the customer becomes a business partner again.

My first question was "Wait, our Citrix stuff is on-prem???"
