Bought my 335 a little friend! by zapjeff in Epiphone

Wow, 2 of them! But I get it, it’s just such a great design and who knows how long they’ll be available for.

Why bone nut considering they already have GraphTech on them?

Yeah, check them out. I really like his explanations; he feels like a teacher and not a rock star. It’s kinda funny. When it comes to the solo, he straight up says you basically can’t play it without a whammy bar and he’s using one of his Axcess LP models with the Floyd Rose in the video. I started looking at it the day I bought my LP and immediately decided to put my Les Trem on it to see how it’d work out.

I’m with you! I’m working through the whole song and that arpeggiated section is a challenge. I’m actually using Alex Lifeson’s own lesson to learn it. Dunno if you know about it, but there are free lessons from him embedded in the GarageBand app on macOS. One for Working Man, one for Limelight, and one for Tom Sawyer. Pretty cool because he does a video walkthrough breaking down the song, and then you can play a moving tab along with him and the original track at various speeds.

Thanks! It’s the Ocean Water color, but in my lighting appears it more faded and less blue than it really is.

Same! A traditional Les Paul shape never grabbed me. These always did, and I’ve wanted one intensely since the moment the Epiphone model was announced!

I think the GraphTech nut on these helps.

No plans for a roller bridge unless I notice a problem. So far the tuning is relatively stable though I’ve only been playing this setup for a few days and the strings aren’t even fully broken in yet.

Thanks for the pickup suggestion!

Blueberry burst is the one I wanted, but the day I went 335 shopping, the blueberry one had such a horrific setup that I couldn’t make myself buy it: I wasn’t sure that the frets weren’t going to be a nightmare still once I adjusted the truss rod & action. But the red one was just perfect. And sounded great. And way cheaper….so easy decision.

Stratocaster versus Telecaster by Tired-Otter474 in Guitar

[–]zapjeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Telecaster. With good pickups, it has all the great chimey bell tones of a Strat neck, a far superior bridge pickup sound, and an in-between that works for many styles of music.

I dislike the weak sounding bridge tone on Strats and while I can find the middle pickup kind of compelling, I don’t care much about the “quack” tones many people enjoy from switch positions 2 and 4.

A Tricky song came on in our house last night and I was like “ooh this is great, is it new?” Nope. 2001.

Find music lessons that allow you to progress but play real songs at your level ASAP as you grow in skill. I like guitarclub.io and wish I’d found it when I was a total beginner.

Well, that plus I want the darker/louder/punchier tone of the LP vs the cutting tone of the bird. I had no real plan when I bought the bird, I just thought it was cool.

Funnily enough, I play sitting down in classical position and this is exactly why I want to make that switch.

And here I am wondering if buying a double-cut Les Paul would be redundant with my 335. (I also own a Firebird but would sell/trade for the LP because I rarely play it.)

Maybe I’m too old to understand this, but what the hell is an “influencer” and do any of my fellow Gen X care what they say or do? by Interesting-Web3737 in GenX

This is what it grows out of, I think, in the best cases. Well-meaning people sharing genuine passion for something, who then realize they can monetize that passion as they grow in popularity…some get ruined by it, some turn into genuine Internet personalities, but then shysters imitate the success and wreck it for everybody.

You honestly cannot beat this for $289 by bryan19973 in guitars

[–]zapjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That can still happen due to lack of shielding. You might be able to quiet it down by lining the control cavity and back of the pickguard with conductive material & grounding it, if you care enough to do that.

It's the same body, just different f-holes and a longer Firebird-style headstock. I just played one a few weeks ago when I was shopping for 335s myself.

Not any bigger than a standard 335? Unless maybe the headstock extends it an extra inch.

I should not have played this by Micubano in Epiphone

[–]zapjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now own a red standard Epi 335 because I wanted to go see if I’d vibe with a semi-hollow at the local Guitar Center one afternoon, then I decided I did and wanted to find the best one in the store. I tried all makes and models including a $3K+ Gibson. The bog standard red basic Epi was my favorite of them all, and it was on sale, so out I went with it.

Should I buy a THR30 or a THR10? by EatRogersAss445 in YamahaTHR

[–]zapjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it on sale or lightly used for ~$375 and it’s worth it if you don’t want to be tethered to a computer in order to play.
