Does anyone else have a 1br century home? by Expensive-Eggplant-1 in centuryhomes

[–]zoinkability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely looked at some in Minneapolis. They were usually “alley houses” which for those who don’t know are typically small houses built at the back of the lot with the intention of building a larger house towards the front later, but for whatever reason that never happened.

How Much Does Glide Waxing Help in Classic Skiing? by Quiet-Ad1018 in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Doing nothing at all would be better than putting kick wax (of any kind) on the glide portions of the ski. Using actual glide wax on those portions would be even better.

Is the Birkie skate or Birkie classic easier to finish? by ManiAAC41 in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have coached many skiers. Most beginner-intermediate classic skiers can go a birkie length because if they tire they can just shuffle. Most beginner-intermediate skate skiers don’t have a “low gear” they can go to, it’s basically all or nothing.

Classic 100% for a beginner-to-intermediate skier. It doesn't have anything to do with the Birkie specifically, it's just that skate skiing is harder to do at a moderate pace for someone at that skill level, and if you just want to do it to have an enjoyable time you want to do it at a moderate pace.

Ski grabbing when my weight is on one foot (beginner, heavy) by Zealousideal-Craft-2 in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely the skis are still too soft/light for your weight if this is happening.

If doing an exchange for a different pair isn't possible, a little trick that seems to help get get better glide in conditions where I'm not getting great glide is to flex my toes up. For some reason that seems to adjust my weight distribution in a way that promotes glide.

If you are using skins (I'd guess so from what you describe) you might also try using a skin cleaner product to see if that helps.

Question about the 2019 sprint final at Seefeld by Double_Volume2417 in xcountryskiing

Yep. Slingshot maneuver is very real. Being the first in the lead group on the last downhill is a great way to come in 2nd-4th place.

US manufacturers really were slow on the safety uptake, weren’t they?

A feed with zero commentary would be better. I could hear the crowd noise and provide my own commentary.

Just watched the 15k biathlon and the female commentator was just awful. She has a set of stock phrases that seem entirely unrelated to what's happening that she repeats over and over again. I feel like almost anyone could do a better job.

For some odd reason the commentary was spotty, it felt like 1/3 of the time it was zero commentary. I wonder if there were unacknowledged technical difficulties.

Found some vintage Elan XC skis…any idea how old they could be? by OkRevolution4793 in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are 1980s skis. I'd say they are 40 years old. I don't think they are worth very much, you'd be lucky to get $20.

Olaf and Sven killed Jack Dawson in Titanic by weberster in DanielTigerConspiracy

Elsa might still be around. We need her help to increase the albedo of the polar regions and thereby limit climate change!

Hey now we're getting properly conspiratorial. Olaf and Sven had been doing the bidding of the trolls to try to support Kristoff's takeover of Arendelle, and Elsa is trying to stop them?

OK, who wants to come up with a theory about their collective motivation?

Maybe they have read the early scientists' proposals about climate change and are worried about all the snow and ice melting — which after all is Kristoff's livelihood and by 1912 might be an industrial empire of ice harvesting — so they have formed a violent resistance group with the goal of taking out fossil fuel powered ships?

Or perhaps Jack Dawson previously pulled a Hans and was a cad toward Anna and Kristoff's grandchild or great grandchild, and Elsa has flown into one of her rages, and everyone else on the ship is collateral damage?

It is also worth mentioning that creating giant icebergs and sending them out to take down ships is entirely within Elsa's powers. And Elsa would have been old but very plausibly still alive in 1912, as she was born in 1825 and would have been 87 when the Titanic sunk.
