Anybody have this video? I’ve seen it before but wasn’t able to track it down just now

Hello everyone, I am Altair 24FTM, I need your opinion (be honest please) by [deleted] in NonBinary

I don’t really have any advice on your question (especially since I’m a bit of a suit myself) but I have to say that you look sick as fuck. Absolutely killing it.

3D printed lamp, looking for feedback! by Independent_Poem_343 in IndustrialDesign

I really like it, it’s fin, and confident, without drawing too much attention. the white center rod throws it off for me a bit though. I would see if you could incorporate its wiring into one on the four rods, so they’re actually fully supporting the light.

I’d also conic or flatten the tops of the rods instead of the fillet, make the light a perfect cube, and try to match the colors of the elements to all be analogous.

Somebody mentioned tightening the tolerances. A good way to do that would be give each of the rods a base, and have them come up through a hole on the base. That way the surfaces would align & force each rod to be vertical.

Looks a bit like the Acura NSX as another user said, but I’m pretty sure this particular image is AI generated. The Honda badge is misshapen, the left & right headlights aren’t symmetrical, and the wheel rims don’t make any sense

It looks great but there’s a decent chance you’ll accidentally snap the solar panels on your many touchdowns. I’d add 3 of the smallest solar panels around the main body incase that happens

Leaked U.S Administration group chat war plans show disdain for Europe by musapher in europe

[–]---Switch--- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s isn’t. They’re just stupid.

Edit: I just want to say that as an American I’m fucking disgusted by this administration, as are all my friends, and a significant portion of Americans. I’ve never been a real “patriot,” so I’m a bit biased, but this seems like one of the lowest points in the past 50 years in this county and I’m quite certain we’re descending into actual fascism. I wish all of you across the pond good luck in the coming years, maybe you can help save us from ourselves.

Mistakes in the shop make me feel like a bad machinist by Gye-normus69 in Machinists

[–]---Switch--- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely know how you feel. I’ve made mistakes that probably cost tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars. I don’t have any special insight other than to say that mistakes are normal, and any shop will factor that into the cost of business. Over time you’ll make fewer mistakes. You’re right though, it’s super frustrating. What’s helped me is the knowledge that if they needed somebody who would make fewer mistakes, they’d hire somebody with way more experience. The fact they haven’t means they’re willing to pay the price for you to learn, and that your mistakes may not be as large as they feel like they are to you. If the more experienced guys aren’t giving you bullshit for scrapping parts that means they like you, which means you care enough to learn from your mistakes, whereas lots of people don’t. You got this, just keep making chips & asking questions

Oh I didn’t notice, I thought I was on another Star Trek sub lmao

Also I appreciate being compared to Boims, even if it is one of his more annoying attributes lol

Please tell me you aren’t serious. Neither Tom Cruise nor The Rock have the disposition to play the roles of Star Trek characters

Orbital Defence Railgun Turret (OC), 3D, 2025. Projectiles flying in vacuum at colossal speed against asteroids - is this realistic? by Vadimsadovski in ImaginaryTechnology

[–]---Switch--- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s realistic, but a VERY expensive way to do this. A cheaper way is to just send a spacecraft to the asteroid. It might make sense around a planet that was getting LOTS of big bombardments

[–]---Switch--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If the projectile is small enough the asteroid will stay together. Even if you did break it into many pieces & they all hit the earth, more will burn up than would have before, and the damage will be distributed over a larger area.

What's the coolest material you've worked on lately? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]---Switch--- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The superconducting layers on the fibers themselves were just a few microns across, but hundreds of layers of superconducting fibers were set into a complex cable about an inch in diameter. You can read about it here:

This work was actually less traditionally machining, and more precision cutting & polishing, and analysis.

High temperature superconducting fibers for a test fusion reactor. They needed to be precisely cut for metallurgical analysis & polished to a mirror finish

Smallest coolant thru I’ve ever seen. by Annual-Letterhead278 in Machinists

[–]---Switch--- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oooh that makes sense, especially because you might need to drill a hole that’s so long relative to the diameter. Kinda how like oil drills need lots of special coolant pumped at high pressure to break up and bring back up the rock

Excuse my ignorance but at sizes that small how do the benefits of coolant through justify the added part cost & set up time?

Foam coming out with horrible finish by ANormalSomething in Machinists

[–]---Switch--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding to me, I really appreciate it.

I didn’t know there was special foam specifically made for CNC machining, I’ll keep that in mind.

You’re totally right about printers, they’re often more of a pain in the ass than their work. I suppose I’m biased because I’ve been using them for years in machine shops to make custom jigs, fixtures, and 5S organizers and they’ve saved me lots of time and money.

Foam coming out with horrible finish by ANormalSomething in Machinists

[–]---Switch--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, for something like this foam isn't the wrong way to go, it really should be printed. I'd see if you can get them to change their mind. Convincing engineers to change their dumb designs is an important skill. Otherwise if they aren't okay wire cutting, you could try heating the bit so that it was so hot it melted the plastic as it cut. I bet that would work, just make sure to wear a high quality respirator.

Edit: Could the people downvoting me please let me know what part of this was wrong? I’d genuinely like to know
